Bearing capacity of open-ended piles depends largely on inner frictional resistance, which is influenced by the degree of soil plugging. While a fully-plugged open-ended pile produces a bearing capacity similar to a closed-ended pile, fully coring (or unplugged) pile produces a much smaller bearing capacity. In general, open-ended piles are driven under partially-plugged mode. The formation of soil plug may depend on many factors, including wall thickness at the pile tip (or inner pile diameter), sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip and relative density. In this paper, we studied the effects of wall thickness at the pile base and sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip on bearing capacity using laboratory model tests. The tests were conducted on a medium dense sandy ground. The model piles with different tip thicknesses and sleeve heights of thickened wall at the pile tip were tested. The results were also discussed using the incremental filling ratio and plug length ratio, which are generally used to describe the degree of soil plugging. The results showed that the bearing capacity increases with tip thickness. The bearing capacity of piles of smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$; D is pile outer diameter) was found to be dependent on the sleeve length, while it is independent on the sleeve length of greater than a 1D length. We also found that the soil plug height is dependent on wall thickness at the pile base. The results on the incremental filling ratio revealed that the thinner walled piles produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths. The results also revealed that the soil plug height is dependent on sleeve length of up to 2D length and independent beyond a 2D length. The piles of a smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at shallow penetration depths while the piles of a larger sleeve length (e.g., ${\geq}2D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths.

Ultimate lateral loaded pile capacity is influenced by soil conditions. Methods of calculating ultimate lateral loaded pile capacity in homogeneous soil were suggested by a lot of previous researchers.(Broms 1964, Petrasovits & Award 1972, Prasad & Chari 1999, Zhang et al. 2005) There is only few homogeneous soil in actual condition, however, it could be not conviction that the methods from previous researchers are correct in multi-layered soil. In this study, the variation of ultimate lateral loaded pile capacity was analyzed in the various multi-layered conditions, ultimate lateral loaded pile capacity was calculated by the methods from previous researchers. For this study, the Lateral Pile Load Tests (LPLT) were performed in calibration chamber, the soil was composed by 3 layers and each layers had a various relative density. The results of LPLT were compared with calculated results from the previous researchers.
Pile foundations that support offshore structures or transmission towers are dominantly subjected to cyclic lateral loads due to wind and waves, causing permanent displacement which can severely affect stability of the structures. In this study, a series of cyclic lateral load tests were conducted on a pre-installed aluminum flexible pile in sandy soil with three different relative densities (40%, 70% and 90%) in order to evaluate the permanent displacement of a cyclic laterally loaded pile. Test results showed that the cyclic lateral loads accumulated the irreversible lateral displacement, so-called permanent displacement. As the number of cyclic lateral load increased, accumulated permanent displacement increased, but the permanent displacement due to one loading cycle gradually decreased. In addition, the permanent displacement of a pile increased with decrement of relative density and decreased by soil saturation. From the test results, the normalized permanent displacement defined as the cumulative permanent displacement to the initial permanent displacement ratio was investigated, and empirical equations for predicting the normalized permanent displacement was developed in terms of relative density of the soil and the number of cyclic lateral load.
In this study, the large scale model tests were executed to estimate the Load Sharing Ratio (LSR) of raft in a piled footing under various conditions. The conditions such as the subsoil type, pile length, pile spacing, away type and pile installation method etc. were varied in the pile loading tests about the free-standing group piles and a piled footing. As a result of this study, it was found that there was no difference in the load-settlement curves, resulting from the pile installation method and subsoil type. The piles supported most of the external load until a yielding load of the piled footing, but the raft supported a considerable load after a yielding load. As the relative density of sands increased, the LSR decreased. As the pile spacing was wider and the pile length increased, there was a tendancy for the LSR to increase. But it was also found that the LSR was not affected by the pile installation method and the subsoil type.
In this study, based on the relationship of the vertical force - settlement of batter piles obtained by pressure chamber model tests, the vertical bearing capacity of vertical and batter piles according to the increase of pile inclination was analyzed. A model open - ended steel pipe pile with the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$ and 15$^\circ$ was driven into saturated fine sand with relative density of 50 %, and the static compression load tests were performed under each confining pressure of 35, 70 and 120 kPa in pressure chamber. The vertical bearing capacity of pile obtained from pressure chamber tests increased with the pile inclination. In the case of the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$, 15$^\circ$, increasing ratios of pile bearing capacity were 111, 121, 127 ~ 140 % of vertical bearing capacity respectively. In the case of the inclination of above 20$^\circ$, the model tests could not be performed because of pile of pile head during compressive loading on the pile head.

Nowadays, the amount used carpets are on the increase, according to the improvement of life-style. The pleasantness of carpet is caused by the properties of pile, because the most carpets are made pile fabric. For that reason, a study on the compressional properties of carpet is very important issue. This study has been carried out to investigate the differences of compressional properties in various acrylic carpets which were Cut, Tufted, Jacquard and Shag. Each acrylic carpets was transformed to 4, 6, 8 mm of pile height, as results of transformation, we could get the pressure-thickness curve and pressure-deformation curve. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Rate of compression increases, compressive resistance and compressive elasticity decr-eases, as pile height increases. 2. Regardless of pile height, compressive elasticity reached the limit in recovery period at about 10 minutes. 3. Work of compression increases, as pile height increases. 4. Work of compression decreases, as apparent density increases. 5, Cut-type carpet has the best cushion.

Shaking table tests were peformed to evaluate the subgrade reaction of ground according to the build-up of pore water pressure. Model pile was installed in the sand ground. The acceleration of the model ground, the pore water pressure build-up and displacement of pile were recorded by measuring devices. Subgrade reaction approach based on Winker soil model was applied to obtain the modulus of the horizontal subgrade reaction. The results of analysis show that the reduction factor of the subgrade reaction due to pore pressure increase is about 1 and the horizontal subgrade reaction of liquefied ground is not influenced by the stiffness of pile, a ground acceleration and the intial ground density.
The factors affecting the vertical loads acting on embankment piles can be classified into two factors on pile and soil. Factor on pile is the space between pile cap and factors on soil are embankment height and soil parameters(c, $\phi$). Therefore, a series of model tests were performed both to investigate the extent of influence of these factors and to verify the reliability of the proposed theoretical analysis. In the model tests, the piles were installed in the 6 columns $\times$ 6 rows(or 5 columns $\times$ 5 rows) below the embankment and the isolated pile caps with the area of 2.5cm $\times$ 2.5cm were installed on each pile head. The portion of the embankment load carried by model pile caps decreases with increment of the space between pile caps and increases with increment of the embankment height and the relative density(or internal friction angle) of fill. Also, the experimental results showed good agreement with theoretical predictions.
This paper presents experimental and numerical research results of centrifuge model tests performed to investigate the geotechnical engineering behavior of slag compaction pile as a substitute of sand compaction pile. For centrifuge model tests, bearing capacity of composit soil improved with slag compaction piles, stress concentrations in-between pile and soft clay, settlement characteristics, and failure modes were investigated with slags differing in their relative density. A slag was found to be a good substitute for a sand since the slag compaction pile model showed a greater yield stress intensity up to $30\%$ than the sand compaction pile model under the identical testing conditions. Stress concentration ratio tended to increase with the relative density of slag pile and the clear shear lines in the piles were observed at the depth of $2D{\sim}2.5D$ (D=dia. of model pile) from the top of the piles after loading tests. Numerical analysis with a software of CRISP, implemented with the modified Cam-clay model, was carried out to simulate the results of centrifuge model test. Test results about characteristics of load-settlement curves and stress concentration ratio are in relatively good agreements with numerical estimations.

Recently soil improvement methods are using in many ways such as costal and soft ground of inland. Among them, sand compaction pile be widely used because of quiet few advantages. There are two ways for quality evaluation method of sand compaction pile. Especially standard penetration test is used the most general method. However, Current method have problems in that it is not consider the condition of construction site. Therefore this study is propose new quality evaluation method. Relation of N-$\Phi$ is always not fixed but changing by condition of construction site. By through the Laboratory test we can know relationship between relative density and internal friction. Also this study propose revision for effective stress. From these study, we can acquire more accurate and reasonable result than current method.
