  • Kaolin has long been used in aqueous coatings to produce high-quality coated paper products. While the kaolin industry hat always focused on innovation. the rate of new product introduction hat never been greater than in the past five-to-eight years due to the cost, quality and other competitive pressure facing papermakers. After summarizing many of the performance benefits offered by the new generation of kaolin-baled pigments. this paper reviews four specific pigment advances: a high-performance. ultrafine glossing pigment; an engineered pigment with a narrow particle size distribution; two products from a kaolin-based pigment family developed for metered size presses ; and a novel class of inkjet pigments.

Development of environmentally friendly inorganic fluorescent pigments, A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11: Crystal structure, optical and color properties (친환경 무기 형광 안료 A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 개발: 결정구조, 광학적 특성 및 착색 특성)

  • To develop the bright-vivid red- and yellow-inorganic fluorescent pigments with high luminescence properties, A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 inorganic pigments were synthesized by a water assisted solid state reaction (WASSR) method and a conventional solid state reaction method. Although impurity peaks corresponding to the AVO3 and AV3O8 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) were observed in all samples prepared, the trigonal structure A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and orthorhombic structure Cs2V4O11 were successfully obtained as a main phase. These inorganic pigments showed the broad absorption band (under 550 nm) originated from CT transitions of VO4 polyhedron, and the strong broad red- and green-emission bands due to 3T21A1 and 3T11A1 transitions of the [VO4]3- group. The A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 pigments showed a bright-vivid red- and yellow-body color, where the a* values of the A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) were +35.5 and +45.9, respectively, and b* value of Cs2V4O11 pigments was +50.3. The L* values of the A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 inorganic pigments were over +45. These results indicate that the A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 inorganic pigments could be an attractive candidate as a bright-vivid red- and yellow inorganic pigments.

The Analytical Study of Pigments on Fourguardian Statues in Song-gwang Buddhist Temple in Suncheon - Focusing on Pigments of Virupaksha - (순천 송광사 소조사천왕상 채색안료의 자연과학적 분석 - 서방광목천왕상 채색안료를 중심으로 -)

  • The Four-guardian statues in Song-gwang buddhist temple, Suncheon, Korea, have been remade in AD 1628 and have been repaired and repainted over several times since then. Therefore, the study of the pigments applied on the statues can provide good chance for investigation about pigments used in the late Chosun Period. Pigments on fragments from Gwang-mok(Virupaksha), one of the Four-guardian statues, have been analyzed by optical microscope, SEM-EDX and XRD in order to identify the components and compounds. Six types of materials were found from the fragments, which are soil layer with brown clay band, soil layer containing a lot of fibers, Korean paper with loose texture, Korean paper with dense texture, silk, and hemp textile. Presumably, the soil layer which have brown clay band is basis layer and the other layers are repaired layers. From comparative study for the components of the pigments, applied on upper and lower parts of the repaired layers, we have concluded that those repaired layers had been applied on the statue by the following order; basis layer ${\rightarrow}$ Korean paper with loose texture ${\rightarrow}$ soil containing a lot of fibers ${\rightarrow}$ silk ${\rightarrow}$ hemp textile and Korean paper with dense texture. In addition, the years that those materials were applied on the statue have been estimated as 1720~1891, 1926, 1946 and 1976, respectively. The distinct features of each age are as the following; lead white and copper chloride hydroxide are major white and green pigments before 1891, zinc white, barium white, emerald green, and ultramarine blue appear after 1926 and titanium white uprises around 1976. Our result presented here, study on pigments applied on traditional statues over several different periods, will provide good database for future study on pigments used for traditional painting in Buddist temples and Dancheong.

Characteristics Evaluation of Hobun Pigments according to Shell Types and Calcination (패각의 종류 및 소성 여부에 따른 호분안료의 특성 평가)

  • In this study, the material scientific characteristics of Hobun pigments used as white inorganic pigment for traditional cultural heritage were identified according to the type of shell and calcination and evaluated the stability of the preservation environment. For the purpose of this, we collected 2 different types of Hobun pigments made by oyster and clam shell and its calcined products(at 1,150℃). Hobun pigments before calcined identified calcium carbonate such as calcite, aragonite but calcination derived changing main composition to portlandite and calcite. Results of FE-SEM showed characteristics microstructure for each shell but pigments after calcined observed porous structure. Porous granule highly caused oil adsorption according to increase specific surface area of pigments. In addition, the whiteness improved after calcined pigments compared to non-calcined pigments, and the color improvement rate of Hobun pigment (CS) which made of clam shell was higher. As a result of the accelerated weathering test, the Hobun pigment-colored specimen had a color difference value of less than 2 after the test, which was difficult to recognize with the naked eye. In particular, the color stability has improved as the color difference value of the Hobun pigment is smaller after calcined compared to before non-calcined pigment. However, it was confirmed that the stability of the painting layer was lower in the specimen after calcined pigment. For antifungal activity test, Aspergillus niger, Tyromyces palustris and Trametes versicolor were used as test fungi, and all pigments were found to have preventive and protective effects against fungi. Especially, the antifungal effect of the calcined pigment was excellent, which is due to the stronger basicity of the pigment.

  • Natural pigments are materials that express color and have been used in foods, cosmetics, medicine and so on. Since natural pigments are extracted from animals and plants, they are not uniform in size. Red pigments in particular are more lipophilic than other color pigments and tend to aggregate easily in aqueous solutions which make it difficult to reproduce the specific color due to size change. Found to be an allergen and the growing aversion for it to be used in foods, cochineal pigment, an animal pigment used for red pigments is being used less. In this study, red vegetable pigment lycopene extract and gardenia yellow was made uniform in size by ball-milling, then asymmetrical flow-field flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to measure the size, and a color meter was used to confirm the color. Experimental results showed that the pigment particles were large in size and size distribution was wide before milling, but the size of the particles decreased and size distribution narrowed after milling. Color meter measurements showed that as the milling time increased, the size of the pigment particles decreased and the brightness, redness, and yellowness increased indicating a bright red color.

Analysis on the Pigments and Dyes of the Patterns for Jeogui and Pyeseul of National Museum of Korea (국립중앙박물관 소장 적의본과 폐슬본 채색 안료 및 염료 분석)

  • The patterns for Jeogui and Pyeseul (patterns of the queen's ceremonial robe worn and a belt ornament covering knees in the front) as owned by National Museum of Korea were made in the early 20th century and both of them were colored on paper. Through a non-destructive analysis on pigments and dyes used on both the patterns, it was attempted to identify the coloring materials. As for the analysis of the coloring pigments, the XRF was used. As a result of the pigment analysis on the pattern for Jeogui, it is presumed that lead white was used for obtaining the white color, ink stick for black color, orpiment for yellow color, cinnabar and red lead for red color, copper and arsenical or a mixture of copper carbonate and orpiment for green color whereas brass seems to have been used for obtaining other colors. The pigments used for obtaining the colors of white, black, yellow and green on the pattern for Pyeseul are the same as those used on the pattern for Jeogui whereas the red pigments used on each of the two patterns are seen to be different. Although it may be difficult to identify the kinds of blue pigments that were used on the patterns for Jeogui and Pyeseul, a mixture containing lead white is presumed to be used as blue pigment. Also, as a result of the UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis performed on the blue hanji (traditional Korean paper) of the pattern for Jeogui, it was presumed to have been dyed with indigo.

  • To verifying the stability of Natural pigments for Dancheong which is available on the market was carried out as light resistance and gas corrosion test. In this particular case, we will confirm the characteristics of the only pigments except of Dancheong technique and influence of substance. Medium using for coloring are animal glue and synthetic resin that widely used for Dancheong in currently. Selected to artificial light source is a xenon arc lamp, contaminated gas is nitrogen dioxide gas in experiment. Degree of degradation of pigment were compared by measuring the degree of color change. The result of light resistance test, mineral pigments were good; color is green and blue type, soil pigments also good; color is yellow ocher, white clay, red clay etc. Gamboge, unghwang, cinnabar, red lead were confirmed not good. The result of gas corrosion test, most of the natural pigments were good condition except the red lead. Generally, animal glue samples had better than a synthetic resin samples.

Characteristics of White Pigments Used in Jiho Oh and Bonung Gu's Paintings Produced in Modern and Contemporary Period (근·현대 시대 오지호와 구본웅 유화작품에 사용된 백색계 안료의 특성 연구)

  • To investigate the pigments used in modern and contemporary oil paintings, thirty-two paintings by Jiho Oh and Bonung Gu were selected. The white pigment found in the ground and painting layers was identified as lead white (hydrocerussite), zinc white (zinc oxide), titanium white (titanium dioxide in anatase or rutile forms), calcite (calcium carbonate), and barite (barium sulfate). Further, this indicated that pigments differ according to the artist and date of the painting's creation. However, both Oh and Gu used zinc white during the modern and contemporary period, while lead white was replaced by titanium white, barite and calcite. Compared with the overseas studies on pigments and oil paints, the change patterns of pigments were the same with them but the periods of the use were partially different. It seems to be due to the fact that South Korea is linked to the historical background of the art material which was imported from Japan instead of Western countries. Therefore, it is inevitable that any change in the white pigments used for domestic oil paintings occurred at a different time from global transitions. If the results of this study are used in the analysis of art works it is suggested that a database recording such aspects as material properties of oil paints, artistic techniques, and chronology would become important for future conservation science and the study of art history.

Consideration of Making Techniques for Red Painted Roof Tiles from Presumed Site of Daetongsa in Gongju Using Nondestructive Analysis (비파괴 분석을 활용한 공주 대통사 추정지 출토 주칠흔 기와의 제작기술 검토)

  • The Daetongsa temple is the earliest temple to be constructed during the era of the Three Kingdoms in ancient Korea. The main architect, purpose, and name of the temple have been confirmed through ancient literature and archeological materials carved in the Chinese letter, Daetong, excavated around Gongju. However, the location and range of the temple have remained elusive and were discussed in various studies. In this study, we examine the roof tiles obtained from the presumed site of the Daetongsa temple. The tiles were found to contain traces of red paint (red pigments) on their surface and analyzed using nondestructive techniques. The results imply that roof tiles were made using clay tablets and wooden cylinders, with latticed cloth in between. Additionally, some wooden cylinders appeared to comprise numerous wooden plates tied together by strings. The clay tablets used to make the roof tiles were produced from the source clay via the sorting process. The traces of red paint on the surface of the roof tiles were verified to be traditional pigments used for painting wooden buildings. These pigments were extracted from red ocher or red clay (Seokganju), mainly consisting of iron oxide. In the literature, the location of provenance sites for Seokganju is estimated to be far from Gongju. However, the materials for extracting the red pigments were relatively easy to source because most rocks comprised iron oxides. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the provenance of the red pigments around the presumed site of Daetongsa.

Effect of Bi and Zr addition on yellow colour properties of environment-friendly ceria-based pigments (비스무스와 지르코늄 첨가를 통한 세리아계 친환경 노란색 안료 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Inorganic pigments have been received a great attention for various applications including paint, glazed ceramic ink, art tile, and building exterior due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability. Traditionally, the compositions of $PbCrO_4$, CdS and CdSe have been widely used as a yellow inorganic pigment. However, the use of these compositions has been restricted in recent years, because they contain harmful elements such as Cd, Cr, Pb and Se. In this study, new environment-friendly ceria-based pigment was synthesized using solid state reaction. Crystal structure and morphology of the obtained $Ce_{1-x}Zr_xBi_yO_{2-y/2}$ yellow pigment were analyzed using XRD and SEM, respectively. Substitutional effect of Zr and Bi on the pigment color was analyzed using UV-vis. spectrophotometer and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ analysis. The crystal structure of the obtained pigments was dependent on the calcination temperature. The color characteristics and absorption band of the pigments were dependent on the calcination temperature and Zr, Bi contents. As a result, all the obtained yellow pigments showed the effective absorption ranged from ultraviolet to visible light, and $Ce_{0.44}Zr_{0.36}Bi_{0.20}O_{0.19}$ (x = 0.36, y = 0.20) pigment showed the most brilliant yellow color.
