A cantilever type piezoceramic vibration sensor was developed that could make up for the short-comings of current vibration sensors, such as high price, low sensitivity, and complex structure. For the design, in conjunction with piezoelectric constitutive equations, we derived full analytic response equations of the piezoelectric bimorph sensor to external forces. The external forces were supposed to take the form of either step or sinusoidal force. Based on the results, actual piezoelectric vibration sensors were fabricated and tested for verification of the theoretical results. Further, comparison of the performance of the developed sensor was made with that of a commercially available representative vibration sensor so that quantitative evaluation of its sensitivity could be made. The sensor developed in this work showed excellent sensitivity and thermal stability in addition to the merits of simple structure and low fabrication cost in comparison with conventional mass-loaded piezoelectric sensors.
Based on the theory of piezoelasticity, the static performance of a piezoelectric bilayer cantilever fully covered with electrodes on the upper and lower surfaces is studied. Three models are considered, i.e., the sensor model, the driving displacement model and the blocking force model. By establishing suitable boundary conditions and proposing an appropriate Airy stress function, the exact solutions for piezoelectric bilayer cantilevers are obtained, and the effect of ambient thermal excitation is taken into account. Since the layer thicknesses and material parameters are distinguished in different layers, this paper gives unified solutions for composite piezoelectric bilayer cantilevers including piezoelectric bimorph and piezoelectric heterogeneous bimorph, etc. For some special cases, the simplifications of the present results are compared with other solutions given by other researches based on one-dimensional constitutive equations, and some amendments have been found. The present investigation shows: (1) for a PZT-4 piezoelectric bimorph, the amendments of tip deflections induced by an end shear force, an end moment or an external voltage are about 19.59%, 23.72% and 7.21%, respectively; (2) for a PZT-4-Al piezoelectric heterogeneous bimorph with constant layer thicknesses, the amendments of tip deflections induced by an end shear force, an end moment or an external voltage are 9.85%, 11.78% and 4.07%, respectively, and the amendments of the electrode charges induced by an end shear force or an end moment are both 1.04%; (3) for a PZT-4-Al piezoelectric heterogeneous bimorph with different layer thicknesses, the maximum amendment of tip deflection approaches 23.72%, and the maximum amendment of electrode charge approaches 31.09%. The present solutions can be used to optimize bilayer devices, and the Airy stress function can be used to study other piezoelectric cantilevers including multi-layered piezoelectric cantilevers under corresponding loads.
This paper is concerned with the theoretical and experimental study on the force conrtrol of a miniature robotic gripper. The gripper is an uniform flexible cantilever equipped with a distributed set of compact force sensor. As an actuator piezoelectric acturator, piezoelectric acturator is fixed with cupper plate at which the beam is clamped. The mathematical model of the assembled electro-mechaincal system is developed. The force sensor is described by a set of concentrated mass-spring system. The formulated equations of motion are applied to he study of a control problem where the gripper is commanded to grip an object The usefulness of the PID control technique is verified by experiment.
In this paper, we present a finger tip tactile sensor which can detect contact normal force as well as slip. The sensor is made up of two different materials, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) known as piezoelectric polymer, and pressure variable resistor ink. In order to detect slip on the surface of the object, two PVDF strips are arranged along the normal direction in the robot finger tip and the thumb tip. The surface electrode of the PVDF strip is fabricated using silk-screening technique with silver paste. Also a thin flexible force sensor is fabricated in the form of a matrix using pressure variable resistor ink in order to sense the static force. The developed tactile sensor is physically flexible and it can be deformed three-dimensionally to any shape so that it can be placed on anywhere on the curved surface. In addition, a tactile sensing system is developed, which includes miniaturized charge amplifier to amplify the small signal from the sensor, and the fast signal processing unit. The sensor system is evaluated experimentally and its effectiveness is validated.

An innovative small-scale piezoelectric energy harvester has been proposed to gather wind energy. A conventional horizontal-axis wind power generation has a low generating efficiency at low wind speed. To overcome this weakness, we designed a piezoelectric windmill optimized at low-speed wind. A piezoelectric device having high energy conversion efficiency is used in a small windmill. The maximum output power of the windmill was about 3.14 mW when wind speed was 1.94 m/s. Finally, the output power and the efficiency of the system were compared with a conventional wind power system. This work will be beneficial for the piezoelectric energy harvesting technology to be applied to the real world such as wireless sensor networks (WSN).
This paper presents a new methodology for on-line tool breadage detection by sensor fusion of an acoustic emission (AE) sensor and a built-in force sensor. A built-in piezoelectric force sensor, instead of a tool dynamometer, was used to measure the cutting force without altering the machine tool dynamics. The sensor was inserted in the tool turret housing of an NC lathe. FEM analysis was carried out to locate the most sensitive position for the sensor. A burst of AE signal was used as a triggering signal to inspect the cutting force. A sighificant drop of cutting force was utilized to detect tool breakage. The algorithm was implemented on a DSP board for in-process tool breakage detection. Experiental works showed an excellent monitoring capability of the proposed tool breakage detection system.
This paper presents an inkjet-printed plastic force sensor using PEDOT:PSS. Using a piezoelectric-type inkjet printer, the force sensor was manufactured by printing PEDOT:PSS ink onto a polyimide (PI) substrate film. Applying a vertical force of 0 to 100 N to the force sensor on the PI substrate with a thickness of 64 mm, the resistance of the force sensor increased in proportion to the input force by the length deformation of the PI substrates and the sensor pattern. As a result, the fabricated sensor has a characteristic of 0.001% /N with a linearity of 99.38%. In addition, as the thickness of the PI substrate film increased, the sensitivity of the sensor increased linearly. The fabricated force sensor is expected to be applied to industrial sites and healthcare fields.
Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.
The motion analysis of a translation device driven by a piezoelectric actuator is performed to identify the mechanics of impact drive mechanism and to find the maximum speed waveform. The translation device is modeled as a semidefinite two-degree-of-freedom system. The motion analysis includes effects of friction force between moving mass and contact surface, dynamics of voltage amplifier and piezoelectric elements, and hysteresis of piezoelectric actuator. Base on the model, simulation studies are carried out and then compared with experimental results. It is found that the error between moving distances obtained by analysis and experiment is less than 15% and that the actual motion of moving mass is well predicted by the analytical work, finally, precision positioning experiments are carried out by using a proximity sensor as a feedback sensor. Position control of moving mass is initiated by the maximum speed waveform and finely tuned by the scaled down waveform so that accurate positioning is accomplished within the resolution of the sensor.
