Figures of Merit of (K,Na,Li)(Nb,Ta)O3 Ceramics with Various Li Contents for a Piezoelectric Energy Harvester

  • The figures of merit in the on-resonance and off-resonance conditions ($FOM_{on}$ and $FOM_{off}$) for the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) were measured and compared in $[(K_{0.485}Na_{0.515})_{1-X}Li_X](Nb_{0.99}Ta_{0.01})O_3$ (x = 0.04 ~ 0.09) (KNLNT) ceramics with various Li contents. The crystal structure of CuO-doped KNLNT ceramics changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal around the Li fraction of 0.065. The stable temperature range for the tetragonal phase widens to both higher and lower temperatures as Li is substituted. The piezoelectric charge constant ($d_{33}$), electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) and mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) have maximum values at the Li fraction between 0.055 and 0.065 where the phase boundary lies between the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases. Both $FOM_{on}$ and $FOM_{off}$ have peak values around the phase boundary but the peak compositions are not exactly coincided. The optimal Li fraction in the KNLNT ceramic for a PEH application was found to be between 0.055 and 0.065.

  • Lead-free $0.94(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3$-0.06Ba$(Ti_{0.9}Sn_{0.1})O_3$ [0.94NKN-0.06BTS] ceramics doped with 1 mol% $MnO_2$ were synthesized by a conventional solid state method. The phase transitional behavior and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics sintered at various temperatures were investigated. The 0.94NKN-0.06BTS ceramics sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$, having morphotropic phase boundary of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, exhibited a microstructure with abnormal grain growth. A diffused phase transition behavior for all the specimens was verified as high degree of diffuseness (${\gamma}$) values from 1.45 to 1.79. A high piezoelectric constant of $d_{33}=256$ pC/N and a satisfactory electromechanical coupling factor of $k_p=42%$ were obtained for the relatively dense 0.94NKN-0.06BTS ceramics sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$.

  • Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with the composition of $(Na_{0.54}K_{0.46})_{0.96}Li_{0.04}(Nb_{1-0.10-x}Ta_{0.10}Sb_x)O_{3}$ (x= 0~8 mol%) were fabricated by nomal sintering at $1,090^{\circ}C$ for 5 h. the phase structure, microstructure and electrical properties were investigated with a emphasis on the influence of the Sb content. All samples exhibit a single perovskite phase over the whole compositional range. For the ceramics with x= 4 [mol%], two phase transitions are observed at $75^{\circ}C$ and $366^{\circ}C$, corresponding to the phase transitions of orthorhombic to tetragonal (To-t) and tetragonal to cubic (Tc), respectively. high electrical properties of $d_{33}$= 210.83 pC/N, kp= 40%, ${\varepsilon}_r$= 1,091.35, $\rho$= 4.54 g/$cm^2$ were obtained from the specimen with x= 4 [mol%], which suggests that the composition ceramics is a promising lead-free piezoelectric material.

  • In this study, piezoelectric and dielectric properties of Lead-free $0.97[(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.97}Sb_{0.03})O_3]+0.03[(Bi_{0.5}K_{0.5})TiO_3]$ (abbreviated as 0.97NKNS-0.03BKT)ceramics synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction process were investigated as a function of $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition. The results indicated that the $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition significantly improved the sinterability, grain growth and piezoelctric properties of 0.97NKNS-0.03BKT ceramics. The optimum values as planar piezoelectric coupling coefficient ($k_p$= 0.355), piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$= 207 pC/N) and mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$= 128) were obtained when 0.009KCT was added. The electromechanical coupling factor($k_p$) was slightly decreased according to the increasing temperature.

  • In this study, In order to improve dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, $0.95(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3-0.05Li(Sb_{0.8}Nb_{0.2})O_3+0.2\;wt%Ag_2O+0.4\;wt%MnO_2+Xwt%CuO$ were investigated as a function of the amount of CuO addition. With increasing the amount of CuO addition, density was increased up to 0.4 wt.% CuO and then decreased above. And also, electro mechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) was decreased. At the 0.4 wt% CuO added specimen sintered at $1020^{\circ}C$, $k_p$, Qm, density, dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) and $d_{33}$[pC/N] showed the optimal value of $4.37\;g/cm^3$, 0.354, 305, 645, and 144 pC/N respectively.

  • In this study, the structural, dielectric and piezoelectrical properties of $xPb(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})O_3-(1-x)[0.41Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-0.36PbTiO_3-0.23P Zr)_3]$ (x=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05) system ceramics were investigated. The dielectric constant ${\varepsilon_{33}}^{\tau}$ at loon temperature increased up to 3mol% PMW and decreased with further PMW content. The specimen with 1mol% $Pb(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})O_3$, which has the ${\varepsilon_{33}}^{\tau}=5509$, kp=59[%] and $d_{33}=758{\times}10^{-12}[C/N]$, exhibits good characteristics.

Structural and Piezoelectric Properties of MnO2-Doped PZT-PSN Ceramics for Ultrasonic Vibrator (초음파 진동자용 MnO2가 Doping된 PZT-PSN 세라믹스의 구조 및 압전 특성)

  • For use in ultrasonic actuators, we investigated the structural and piezoelectric properties of $(1\;-\;x)Pb(Zr_{0.515}Ti_{0.485})O_3$ - $xPb(Sb_{1/2}Nb_{1/2})O_3$ + 0.5 wt% $MnO_2$ [(1 - x)PZT - xPSN + $MnO_2$] ceramics with a variation of x (x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08). All the ceramics, which were sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, showed a typical perovskite structure, implying that they were well synthesized. A homogeneous micro structure was also developed for the specimens, and their average grain size was slightly decreased to $1.3{\mu}m$ by increasing x to 0.8. Moreover, a second phase with a pyrochlore structure appeared when x was above 0.06, which resulted in the deterioration of their piezoelectric properties. However, the 0.96PZT-0.04PSN+$MnO_2$ ceramics, which corresponds with a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition in the (1 - x)PZT - xPSN + $MnO_2$ system, exhibited good piezoelectric properties: a piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of 325 pC/N, an electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) of 70.8%, and a mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) of 1779. The specimens with a relatively high curie temperature ($T_c$) of $305^{\circ}C$ also showed a significantly high dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) value of 1109. Therefore, the 0.96PZT - 0.04PSN + $MnO_2$ ceramics are suitable for use in ultrasonic vibrators.

  • Lead-free $[Bi_{0.5}(Na_{1-x}K_x)_{0.5}TiO_3](x=0\~1.0)$ ceramics were prepared using a solid state reaction method and their structural and electrical characteristics were investigated. X-ray investigations indicated that the rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) of the $[Bi_{0.5}(Na_{1-x}K_x)TiO_3$ ceramics exists in the range of $x=0.16\~0.20$. The optimum values of piezoelectric constant$(d_{33})$, dielectric constant, and electromechanical coupling factor $(k_p)$ were obtained at $x=0.16\~0.20$ of the MPB region.

  • $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ (BiT) thin films were well developed on the Pt/Ti/$SiO_2/Si$ substrate by a metal organic decomposition (MOD) method. Oxygen was effective on the crystallization of the BiT thin films during a rapid thermal annealing process. The electrical properties of the BiT films dependant on the oxygen partial pressure were investigated. No crystalline phase was observed for the BiT film annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ under oxygen free atmosphere. However, its crystallinity was significantly evolutionned with increasing oxygen partial pressure. In addition, its dielectric and piezoelectric properties were enhanced with increasing oxygen partial pressure to 10 torr. Especially, the BiT film, annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ and 10 torr oxygen pressure, showed good dielectric properties: dielectric constant of 51 and dielectric loss of 0.2 % at 100 kHz. Its leakage current and piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) was also considerably improved, being as 0.62 nA/$cm^2$ at 1 V and approximately 51 pm/V, respectively.

  • In this study non-stoichiometric $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{0.97}(Nb_{0.96-x}Ta_xSb_{0.04})O_3$ ceramics were prepared by the conventional soild-state teaction method. The effect of Ta-substitution on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis of all the specimens less than x= 15 mol% indicated orthorhombic phase. Thereafter, the specimens showed orthorhombic phase near to pseudo-cubic. Sinterablity of all the specimens was improved due to secondary products such as KCT and KCN. The ceramics with x= 5 mol% showed the optimum velues of pizoelectric constant($d_{33}$)= 150 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor (kp)= 0.45, electromechanical quality factor (Qm)= 418.9 and dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$)= 567. Accordingly, These results indicate that the composition ceramics is a promising candidate for lead-free material.
