Modeling techniques of piled pier were reviewed and the influences of pile cap's boundary conditions were analyzed in this study. The method using flexible springs seems to be useful fur the practical design since its simplified model can represent the complex behaviors of pile groups efficiently. Parameter studies were performed far various pile group arrangements, pile spacings, end bearing conditions, and loading stages to analyze their effects on the lateral displacements, maximum pile bending stresses, and lateral stiffness of pile groups. Through the parameter studies, it was found that when lateral stiffness of pile groups was estimated by using three-dimensional analysis method (YSGroup), its complex behavior could be predicted better than other methods based on single pile analysis.

Piles of a bridge pier are connected with a column through a pile cap(footing). Behavior of the pile foundation can be different according to the connection method between piles and the pile cap. This difference causes a change of the design method. Connection methods between pile heads and the pile cap are divided into two groups ; rigid connections and hinge connections. KHBDC(Korea Highway Bridge Design Code) has specified to use rigid connection method for the highway bridge. In the rigid connection method, maximum bending moment of a pile occurs at the pile head and this helps the pile to prevent the excessive displacement. Rigid methods are also good to improve the seismic performance. However some specifications prescribe that conservative results through investigations for both the fixed-head condition and the free-head condition should be reflected in the design. This statement may induce an over-estimated design for the bridge which have very good quality structures with casing covered drilled shafts and the PC-house contained pile cap. Because the assumption of free-head conditions (hinge connections) are unreal for the elevated pile cap system with multiple piles of the long span sea-crossing bridges. On the other hand, elastic displacement method to evaluate the pile reactions under the pile cap is not suitable for this type of bridges due to impractical assumptions. So, full modeling techniques which analyze the superstructure and the substructure simultaneously should be performed. Loads and stress state of the very large diameter drilled shaft and the pile cap for Incheon Bridge which will the longest bridge in Korea were investigated through the full modeling for rigid connection conditions.

Steel-embedded composite piers provide flexible design alternatives to satisfy the required performance due to various design parameters of composite sections. For the fast construction of composite piers, bolt connection can be utilized for small size piers and post-tensioning to the pier segments for the large size piers. In this paper, experimental results on composite piers were investigated to evlauate the effects of design parameters on the behavior of composite piers. Appropriate sections and their integration methods were suggested according to the design conditions. For the modular construction of bridge piers, pier segments need to be divided considering their weight and careful considerations on details to adjust fabrication and construction error. Connection details for the pier cap were also proposed.

Nondestructive testing techniques have been historically and commonly used to evaluate the quality of existing concrete structures. The techniques utilized included visual inspection, hammer sounding, Schmidt hammer rebounding, and ultrasonic pulse velocity testing including tomographic imaging. Results of the nondestructive tests were used to determine areas to be tested with local destructive tests. These tests included concrete compressive strengths, chloride testing, and petrographic testing. The overall results indicate that inside core of each of the pier caps are healthy. On all of the pier caps, extensive exterior concrete layer rehabilitation needs to be completed. This paper shows the application and interpretation of common nondestructive testing techniques and the consequent repair, rehabilitation, maintenance decisions and safety assesment.

This study has been conducted to confirm the effect of sacrificial anode cathodic protection system for 90 days to protect corrosion on pier that is located in Korea. The cathodically protected structure was a slab and a pile cap. Before the construction of cathodic protection system, the macrography was carried out. As a result of the macrography, many corrosion traces were confirmed in this structure. The trace was mainly focused on joint and zones that concrete cover was eliminated. To apply the cathodic protection system, many onsite techniques have been adopted. In addition, to confirm the inner state of steel in concrete properly, a corrosion monitoring sensor (DMS-100, Conclinic Co. Ltd) has been applied. Test factors were corrosion & cathodic protection potential, 4 hour depolarization potential, resistivity and current density. After 90 days from the installation of cathodic protection system, it could confirm that proper corrosion protection effect was obtained by considering the result of tests.
The main aim of this study was to evaluate the bending and torsional behaviors of representative regular type cap beams in elevated guideway structures. A1/2 scale model copping beam, excluding the column portion, was designed, constructed, and tested. The copping beam was subjected to horizontal monotonic and cyclic loads with a constant vertical load over the loading stage. The damage was very much dominated by torsion. Experiment results showed that the spiral confinement in the beam helped to restrain the opening of torsional cracks in the column zone. Hence, the torsional strength of the cap beam contributesgreatly to the confinement conditions of the column.

The objective of this task is to develop seismic design and capacity detailing recommendations for all portions of bridge piers that do not participate as primary energy dissipation elements. particular emphasis is given to the design requirements of cap beams and their connections of multi-column bridge pier bents. By prestressing the joints it is possible to ensure the joints remain elastic. Prestress enhances the bond and anchorage of the longitudinal column bars and also minimizes or avoids diagonal shear cracking in the joints.
This paper describes a simplified numerical procedure for analyzing the response of bridge pier foundations due to riverbed scouring. A computationally efficient algorithm to analyze the behavior of a pile group is proposed by considering soil-pile, pile-cap, and pile-fluid interactions. The complex phenomenon of the pile-soil interaction is modeled by discrete nonlinear soil springs (p-y, t-z and q-z curves). The pile-cap interaction is considered by geometric configuration of the piles in a group and connectivity conditions between piles and the cap. The pile-fluid interaction is incorporated into the procedure by reducing the stiffness of the soil-pile reactions as a result of nonlinearity and degradation of the soil stiffness with river bridge scouring. Through the numerical study, it is shown that the maximum bending moment increases with increasing scour depth. Thus it is desirable to check the stability elf pile groups based on soil-pile and pile-cap interactions by considering scouring depth in the riverbed.
A coupled three-dimensional pile group analysis method (YSGroup) was developed considering nonlinear pile head stiffness matrices and compared with other analytical methods (elastic displacement method, Group 6.0 and FBPier 3.0). In this method, a pile cap was modelled by four-node flat shell element, a pier was modelled using 3 dimensional beam element, and individual piles were modelled as beam-column elements. Through the comparative studies on a piled pie. subjected to lateral loads in linear soil, it was found that present method (YSGroup), elastic displacement method and Group 6.0 gave similar results of lateral pile head displacement, but FBPier 3.0 was estimated to show somewhat larger displacements than those from the three methods. Displacements of superstructure (pier), including nonlinear soil behavior, could be estimated by present method (YSGroup) and FBPier 3.0 because these two methods modelled the superstructure directly by finite element techniques. It was found that pile groups in pinned pile head condition had a tendency to cause excessive rotation of the pile cap.
