  • Objectives : Headache is a clinical symptom that more than 90% of all individuals experience during their life time. This article provides a current concept of tension-type and migraine headaches and summarizes the effects of biofeedback treatment and/or relaxation techniques. Methods : The following terms were used for Pubmed/Medline search : biofeedback, relaxation, physiological, behavioral, nonpharmacological, headache, tension-type headache, and migraine. A review of references from relevant literature was also conducted to collect reports not identified in the Pubmed/Medline search. Interviews with experts on biofeedback were also included in this review. Results : Headache is a psychophysiological symptom that can be treated by some behavioral interventions including biofeedback and relaxation. Literatures on biofeedback and/or relaxation have consistently reported significant therapeutic effects on headaches. Important factors that we have to consider, when we apply to headache patients with biofeedback and relaxation techniques, were also presented. Conclusion : The available evidence suggests that biofeedback and relaxation techniques are effective treatments for the patients with headaches and can be provided to the patients as monotherapy or combination therapy with medication.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological index, anxiety and depression by the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methods: This research was conducted from the 4th to the 27th of May in 2016 on112 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The data were analyzed using a chi-square test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficients. Results: The results demonstrated a difference depending on the dysuria period of each lower urinary tract symptom, marital status, occupation and perceived health state of the patient. The physiological index by lower urinary tract symptoms showed a difference in the maximum flow rate, amount of post-void residual urine and Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), and anxiety and depression factors also revealed a difference. Lower urinary tract symptoms showed a positive correlation to the amount of post voided residual urine and PSA, a negative correlation to the maximum flow rate and also indicated a positive correlation to depression. Conclusion: The results of the study belonging to the moderate and severe categories were high when the result was based on the categorization of subjects with benign prostatic hyperplasia with lower urinary tract symptoms. Considering that depression levels increase as the symptom intensifies and the anxiety score is also high with mild symptoms, psychological support intervention is needed when a pattern of benign prostatic hyperplasia appears.

  • In order to ensure the fact that eight principle pattern differentiation is used clinically as a basic guideline for Korean medicine practice, the definition, role and method of yin-yang pattern differentiation with its case report were explored at first. Yinyang Pattern Differentiation is a method of discriminating human tendencies or morbidity based on the yin and yang characteristics expressed in living bodies. And yin and yang are the two contrasting characteristics and aspects of the interaction when certain physical conditions that have a lasting effect on the human physiological metabolic function are correlated with the morbidity. Specific methods of yinyang pattern differentiation can be divided into several types of yin and yang indicators. First, time and space factors like day and night, hot and cold seasons, above and below, topographical districts. Second, colors and pulse and their/or relative clearness and muddiness, hardness and softness, moving and resting. Third, diagnose yin and yang patterns through distinguishing the true and false of a fever and cold in an emergency phase such as increase of brain pressure and shock state. Fourth, general characteristics of the propensity and constitution of a subject such as body type, speech, behavior, and physiological metabolism. And for clinical use, these were summarized again as a symptom indicators of physical signs and color, pulse, tongue and questionnaire indicators of propensity, body type, and space-time characteristics. Conclusively, it was confirmed that yinyang pattern differentiation has its own diagnostic significance which is distinct from exterior-interior, cold-heat and deficiency-excess pattern differentiation.

Chapter 11 refers to the symptom, pulse and treatment of Abdominal Fuliness(腹滿), Cold Mounting(寒疝) and Abiding Food(宿食). Chapter 12 refers to the symptom and pulse of Accumulation and Mass of the Five Viscera(五臟積聚). Chapter 13 refers to the cause, pathogenesis, symptom, pulse, treatment and prognosis of Terror and Palpitation due to Fright(驚悸), Hematemesis(吐血), Nasal Hemorrhage(?血), Metrorrhagia(下血) and Extravasated Blood(瘀血). Chapter 14 refers to the cause, pathogenesis, symptom, pulse and treatment of Vomiting(嘔吐), Hiccough(?) and Diarrhea(下利). Chapter 15 refers to the cause, pathogenesis, symptom, pulse and treatment of Atrophy of Lung(肺?), Pulmonary Abscess(肺癰), Lung-distention(咳逆上氣) and Phlegm(痰飮). Chapter 16 refers to the cause, pathogenesis, symptom, pulse. treatment and prognosis of Carbuncle(癰腫), Intestines Carbuncle(腸癰), Wound(金瘡) and Acute Eczema(侵淫瘡). There have been abundant investigations in China. But we couldn't find a clear result yet, and they were written in archaic texts and colloquial Chinese, therefore it is needed to be translated into Korean. And there was only one inaccurate translation with insufficient annotation. So I hope this study will be useful to develope Oriental Medical Diagnostics.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate Effects of Cheongyoung-tang on CHT-Induced Brain Edema and Neurological Disturbance Symptom in Rats. we make a comparative study of the such parameters as neurological severity score(NSS) and changes in water content, lactate, glucose and hematological substance. 1. ΔNSS increased in CYT1 and CYT2 as compared with the control group, which showed no efficacy. 2. In water content of both hemispheres, CYT1 and CYT2 as compared with the control group have no difference. 3. Water content of the left hemisphere decreased in CYT1 and CYT2 as compared with the control group. 4. The lactate level in serum decreased in CYT1 and CYT2 as compared with the control group. 5. In hematological changes, RBC, PLT and MCHC increased in CYT1 and CYT2 as compared with the control group, but MCV decreased. According to these results, CYT has an effect on CHT-induced brain edema and neurological symptom.

  • Occurrence of soft rots was observed on Dendrobium phalaenopsis and Phalaenopsis sp. that were grown at the greenhouses in Sunchon and Kwangyang areas, Chonnam province of Korea in 1997 and 1998. Typical soft rot symptom appeared frequently on young plants of D. phalaenopsis and Phalaenopsis sp. Soft rot symptom usually appeared on old leaves of D. phalaenopsis, and extended into whole leaves, accompanying blighting of whole plants. Symptom began as a small water-soaked lesion on old leaves of Phalaenopsis sp., which enlarged rapidly on the leaves and eventually resulted in soft rots of whole plants. The causal organism isolated from the infected lesions was identified as Erwinia chrysanthemi based on its pathogenicity, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and the results of the BIOLOGTM program. The bacterial soft rot caused by e. chrysanthemi was firstly describe din D. phalaenopsis and Phalanopsis sp. in Korea.
