A new method for the measure of iron pools using 0.02M EDTA and $Na_2S_2O_4$ was tested on Akagare diseased and healthy rice leaf tissue 1) The proposed method could fraction iron into four fractions; ferrous iron($Fe^{++}$), ferric iron($Fe^{+++}$) precipitated iron(PFe) and bound iron(BFe) well indicating the physiological status of tissue. 2) The pattern of iron pools appears to be $Fe^{+++}>PFe>BFe>Fe^{++}$ in most physiologically favorable status of iron, $PFe>Fe^{+++}>BFe>Fe^{++}$ in favorable status, $BFe>Fe^{+++}>PFe>Fe^{++}$ in unfavorable status and $BFe>PFe>Fe^{+++}>Fe^{++}$ in toxic status. 3) The percentage of each fraction to total iron was less than 10 for $Fe^{++}$, 20 to 40 for $Fe^{+++}$ and PFe and 20 to 50 for BFe. 4) Ferrous iron was always higher in upper half leaf, the appearance of which is less healthier than lower half indicating that there is more active metabolic system in which ferrous iron is involved.
As the advent of an aging society, housing for the elderly has been of great concern. Because the majority of the elderly prefers living in their own familiar homes rather than moving to new ones, this study is concerned with the ways use and maintenance of the existing houses from the viewpoint of their independent living. The data was analyzed with frequency, percentage, mean, correlation, and multiple regression by using the SPSS 10.0 for Windows. The findings from the study were: Needs for Affordance of interior design(AID) were required slightly above the average. Among the items of AID, physiological maintenance was the most demanding, and social facilitation, behavioral facilitation, and perceptual maintenance were sequentially followed in the level of needs. The elements that should be considered in housing environment plans for the elderly household ire: (a) use of slip-proof tiles for the floor of the bathroom, (b) installation of safety bars in the bathroom, and (c) installation of emergency buttons. It also turned out that educational levels and health status were the most significant factors on the needs for AID.

Purpose: Many Korean college students suffer from physical inactivity and mental health problems. However, it has not been sufficiently reported how this lack of exercise and health-related behavior affect their health. The present study was performed to identify the relationships among physical activity level, health-promoting behavior, and physiological variables in Korean undergraduate and graduate students. Methods: Participants were 115 undergraduate and graduate students from one university in Seoul. The Pearson's correlation analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows. Results: Physical activity level had significant positive correlations with health-promoting behavior (r=.32, p=.001) and exercise self-efficacy (r=.25, p=.008), and health-promoting behavior had a significant correlation with depression (r=-.33, p<.001) and exercise self-efficacy (r=.44, p<.001). Additionally, physical activity level had significant correlations with triglyceride (r=-.20, p=.034) and vitamin D (r=.20, p=.029) levels. The high density cholesterol level had significant negative correlations with systolic blood pressure (r=-.33, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (r=-.29, p=.002), and vitamin D (r=-.20, p=.035) levels. Conclusion: Physical activity level or health-promoting behavior had significant relationships with the health status of college students. Strategies need to be developed to improve health-promoting behaviors among college students.
Purpose: This study was intended for the enhancement of the elderly's quality of life helping them overcome their physiological changes about aging and reinforcing their vitality. Methods: An nonequivalent control group post-test design was used for the study. The methods to perform the abdominal respiration exercise and to blow the pan-flute were demonstrated to 31 experimental subjects and 36 control subjects. The eight-week 30 minute daily home respiration exercise recipes were prescribed to the subjects. Mobile spirometers were used to measure FVC, $FEV_1$, $FFV_1$ / FVC, $SaO_2$, breathing discomfort. Daily life satisfaction scores were recorded. Music therapy accompanied the eight-week respiration program. A post-test was performed in the same manner as the pre-test. The gathered data were analysed by SPSS/WIN program. Results: 1) The pulmonary function and daily life satisfaction were significantly improved in the experimental group. 2) Both the experimental and control groups did not show significant differences in $SaO_2$. 3) The breathing discomfort was significantly reduced in the experimental group. Conclusion: The respiration exercise program for the elderly through the pan-flute improves the respiration activity of the elderly and enhances their daily life satisfaction scores. Therefore, this program produces effects in enhancing the quality of life for the elderly.
Hippocampal slice models can be a powerful tool to study the mechanism of partial epilepsy. Despite the loss of connection with the rest of the brain, in vitro hippocampal slice preparations allow detailed physiological and pharmacological studies, which would be impossible, in vivo. There are several methods to induce electrographic seizures on hippocampal slice models. Those are electrical pulse train stimulation, 0 $Mg^{2+}$ artificial cerebrational fluid and high concentration of extracelluar $K^+$ on bath. Among them, the electrically triggered seizure may mimic the physiological communication between neuronal populations without any deterioration of normal physiologic and chemical status of the hippocampal slice models. Presumably, such communication from hyperexcitable areas to other neuronal populations is involved in the development of epilepsy. Electrographic seizures in hippocampal slice models occur in the network of neurons that are involved in epileptic seizures in the hippocampus in vivo. Because these models have many advantages and are very valuable to research of epileptogenesis on partial epilepsy, I would like to introduce the electrophysiological methods to induce electrographic seizure or epilepsy on hippocampal slice models briefly in this paper.
Hair loss is a common status found among people of all ages. Since the role of hair is much more related to culture and individual identity, hair loss can have a great influence on well-being and quality of life. It is a disorder that is observed in only scalp patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) or alopecia areata caused by stress or immune response abnormalities. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved therapeutic medicines such as finasteride, and minoxidil improve hair loss temporarily, but when they stop, they have a limitation in that hair loss occurs again. As an alternative strategy for improving hair growth, many studies reported that there is a relationship between the expression levels of prostaglandins (PGs) and hair growth. Four major PGs such as prostaglandin D2 (PGD22), prostaglandin I2 (PGI2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) are spatiotemporally expressed in hair follicles and are implicated in hair loss. This review investigated the physiological roles and pharmacological interventions of the PGs in the pathogenesis of hair loss and provided these novel insights for clinical therapeutics for patients suffering from alopecia.

This study aims to identify research trends and explore the latest methods of applying aromatherapy to the elderly. The main objective is to provide evidence in support of development of an aromatherapy nursing intervention program for the elderly. This investigation is in the form of a literature review focusing on the current status and trends in research conducted on aromatherapy intervention programs for the elderly in Korea over past decade. Published studies were identified through database such as KCI, RISS, DBpia, NDSL. A total 14 studies were selected for this review. The majority of selected articles fall within the field of nursing. The duration of the programs varied, ranging from less than 20 minutes to over 40 minutes, and consisted of 1 to 6 sessions. Most of methods involved massages using lavender oil in a hospital setting. Outcome variables were categorized into three main domains based on significance: psychological-emotional, interpersonal relationship, and physical-physiological. The variables within each category varied with 4 in psychological-emotional, 1 in interpersonal relationship, and 17 in physical-physiological. This review indicates that aromatherapy intervention programs have positive effects on the elderly and suggests the potential for developing similar interventions on a broader scale within community settings in the future.
Recently high interest in health and fitness has led to vibrant researches for the active fitness system to learn and enjoy the exercise program for oneself. In this paper, we design and implement the active spinning training system which enables user to have self-learning and experience of customized spinning training program by the biometric and movement information acquired from user's physiological signals. The proposed system provides the appropriate difficulty of spinning program which reflects the concordance rate of spinning dance gestures and the amount of exercising by analyzing the physical status of participant from his brain and pulse waves and recognizing the skeletal movement in real time. For the higher exercise effect, the system offers a virtual personal trainer to show the correct poses and controls the level of difficulty depending on the concordance rate of participant's motions. The experiment with various participants through the proposed system shows that it is able to help users in getting the available exercise effect in comparatively short time.
Viable potential of Mycobacterium smegmatis, a slow grower in vitro cultivation and of M. leprae, an obligate intracellular parasitic bacterium, which can not be cultured yet in vitro was assessed by fluorospectrophotometry. Bacterial cells in different numbers and under various physiological status were incubater with fluorescein diacetate(FDA). After an incubation of the bacterial preparations with FDA at specified conditions, amount of fluorescein inside bacteria was measured by a fluorospectrophotometer at 470nm and 510nm of excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively. Fluorounit given by such bacteria showed a correlation with assessment of viability of the same preparations made by other methods, such as optical density and colony forming units of M. smegmatis and intracellular ATP content of M. leprae. The possible use of fluorospectrophotometry in assessing viability or physiological potential of bacteria, particularly intracellular parasites and fastidious organisms to culture in vitro is discussed in relation to other methods.
