Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the time and content of dietary education by analyzing the physiological indicators of hemodialysis patients during their first year and to present baseline data related to dietary education for patients on hemodialysis. Methods: For this retrospective study physiological indicators for 73 patients on hemodialysis were analyzed. Data included levels of potassium, phosphorus, albumin and the IDWG rate, and Kt/V during the first year after starting hemodialysis. Repeated-measure ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Results: Serum levels of phosphorus (p<.006), albumin (p<.001) and the IDWG rate (p<.001) increased significantly in the 7 months from the start of hemodialysis. Conclusion: The results indicate that the period in which diet related educational intervention is necessary is before physiological changes, that is, after 6 months of dialysis. The contents for effective education should include phosphorus-limited and weight control dietary restrictions at 6 months.

It is well known that a long-term exposure to a loud noise environment affects performance, since it distracts attention, and also is able to evoke stress accompanied by negative emotional states. The purpose of this study was to analyze dynamics of subjective and physiological variables during long-lasting (30 min) exposure to intensive white noise (85 dB[A]). Physiological signals on 23 college students were recorded by BIOPAC, Grass Neurodata systems and AcqKnowledge 3.5 software. Autonomic variables, namely skin conductance level (SCL), non-specific SCR number (N-SCR), inter-beat intervals in ECG (RR intervals), heart rate variability index (HF/LF ratio of HRV), respiration rate (RESP), and skin temperature (SKT) were analyzed on 5 min epoch basis. Psychological assessment (subjective rating of stress level) was also repeated on every 5 min basis. Regression and correlation analyses were employed to trace the time course of the dynamics of the subjective and autonomic physiological variables and their relationship. Results showed that intense noise evokes subjective stress with associated autonomic nervous system responses. However, it was shown that physiological variables endure specific changes in the process of exposure to loud white noise. Discussed are probable psychophysiological mechanisms mediating reactivity to long-term auditory stimulation of high intensity.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of crude saponin fracton from Korean red ginseng on physiological events of ovariectomized rats. The saponin fractions was prepared by Diaion HP-20 adsorption chromatography and spirit. Total 50 rats were divided into 5 groups : normal control (NC), sham-ovariectomized (SO), ovariectomized (OR), ovariectomized and saponin treated (OS), and normal control treated with saponin (NS). Saponin was intraperitonally administered for 8 weeks. Ovariectomy was carried out at 1 st and 2nd weeks of experiment. Right-side ovary of rat was removed at 1st week, the otehr was done at 2nd week. The body weights fo ovariectomized rats showed no significant changes but that of NS group showed significant increase (p<0.05) compared with NC group. Ovariectomy of rats reduced the weights of femur by 6 to 8% compared with that of NC group. In addition, femur weight of NS group was 5 to 6% higher than that of NC. Uterus weight showed no significant differences by saponin treatment or ovariectomy. Serum testosterone level of ovariectomized rats increased by 60 times compared with that of NC. However, administration of crude saponin to ovariectomized rat attenuated testosterone level to almost that of NC. These results suggest that Korean red ginseng saponin attenuates physiological disorders induced by malfunction of ovary.
Heat stress exerts a substantial effect on dairy production. The temperature and humidity index (THI) is widely used to assess heat stress in dairy operations. Herein, we review the effects of high temperature and humidity on body temperature, feed intake, milk production, follicle development, estrous behavior, and pregnancy in dairy cows. Analyses of the effects of THI on dairy production have shown that body temperature is an important physiological parameter in the evaluation of the health state of dairy cows. Although THI is an important environmental index and can help to infer the degree of heat stress, it does not reflect the physiological changes experienced by dairy cows undergoing heat stress. However, the simultaneous measurement of THI and physiological indexes (e.g., body temperature) would be very useful for improving dairy production. The successful development of automatic detection techniques makes it possible to combine THI with other physiological indexes (i.e., body temperature and activity), which could help us to comprehensively evaluate heat stress in dairy cows and provide important technical support to effectively prevent heat stress.
This study evaluated the thermal physiological and psychological responses elicited when wearing cold protective jackets with aerogel fillings in two cold environments, one without air velocities and one with air velocities (2.3 m·s-1), at an air temperature of 10℃. The participants were five healthy young males. Measures were taken of physiological parameters, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), core temperature, oxygen uptake (Vo2), and microclimate (temperature and humidity). The psychological parameters evaluated were thermal and wetness sensation. No differences were observed in systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen intake between the conditions. At tympanic temperature, a significant difference was observed between the conditions during exercise (p<.05); . A significant difference was observed in the microclimate temperature of the clothing according to the airflow, and temperature changes in the chest and back revealed different patterns. Significant differences were observed in thermal sensation (whole body (p<.05), chest (p<.05), back (p<.01)) between airflow conditions. The results therefore indicate that cold protective jackets with an aerogel filling are suitable for people operating in low-temperature and airflow environments.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of subchronic oral administration of aloesin on changes in the body weight and blood biochemistry in rats. Aloesin were given orally at a rate of 100 mg/kg every 12 hours for 15 days. The rats in the control group received isotonic saline. Thebody weight and food consumption were measured every 12hrs immediately prior to each treatment throughout the study period. (omitted)
Background: The impact of fungicide azoxystrobin, applied as foliar spray, on the physiological and biochemical indices and ginsenoside contents of ginseng was studied in ginseng (Panax ginseng Mey. cv. "Ermaya") under natural environmental conditions. Different concentrations of 25% azoxystrobin SC (150 g a.i./ha and 225 g a.i./ha) on ginseng plants were sprayed three times, and the changes in physiological and biochemical indices and ginsenoside contents of ginseng leaves were tested. Methods: Physiological and biochemical indices were measured using a spectrophotometer (Shimadzu UV-2450). Every index was determined three times per replication. Extracts of ginsenosides were analyzed by HPLC (Shimadzu LC20-AB) utilizing a GL-Wondasil $C_{18}$ column. Results: Chlorophyll and soluble protein contents were significantly (p = 0.05) increased compared with the control by the application of azoxystrobin. Additionally, activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, peroxidase, and ginsenoside contents in azoxystrobin-treated plants were improved, and malondialdehyde content and $O_2^-$ contents were reduced effectively. Azoxystrobin treatments to ginseng plants at all growth stages suggested that the azoxystrobin-induced delay of senescence was due to an enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity protecting the plants from harmful active oxygen species. When the dose of azoxystrobin was 225 g a.i./ha, the effect was more significant. Conclusion: This work suggested that azoxystrobin played a role in delaying senescence by changing physiological and biochemical indices and improving ginsenoside contents in ginseng leaves.
The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of enhanced physiological activities in cultures isolated from Korean fermented watery Kimchi, Dongchimi, of single lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and when these three are mixed LAB as probiotics. Using the BIOLOG system and 16S rRNA sequencing, the isolates were characterized, and identified and assigned to Leuconostoc mesenteroides DK-3, Leuconostoc dextranicum DK-6, and Lactobacillus curvatus DK-13, respectively. Growth rate and pH changes, production of organic acids as metabolites, and physiological activities of the single and mixed LAB cultures, were monitored and compared. In mixed LAB cultures after 72 h of incubation, the maximum concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid were approximately 340.5 mM and 191.9 mM, respectively, and pH changed from 7.00 to 3.62. Mixed LAB cultures were able to eliminate 96.3% of nitrite. Activities of antioxidant and ${\beta}$-galactosidase were 60.3% and 16.8 units/mg, respectively. Significant antibacterial activity of the concentrated supernatants was demonstrated against several food-poisoning bacteria. Physiological activities obtained from the mixed LAB cultures have been shown to be considerably higher than those of single LAB cultures. In conclusion, these studies demonstrate that compared to the single cultures, all physiological activities in mixed LAB cultures are significantly enhanced.
Transcriptome analysis was performed for the production of recombinant protein in E. coli using DNA microarray containing 2,850 genes including all functionally known and putative ones. Changes in transcriptome were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively to provide their physiological and metabolic meanings.
