  • Physical weathering caused by external forces and chemical weathering caused by the decomposition or alteration of constituent materials are the two factors that dominate the mechanical properties of rocks. In this study, a field investigation was undertaken to identify the physical and chemical weathering characteristics of the biotite granite and granitic weathered soils in Gyeongju, South Korea. Samples were collected according to their grade of weathering and subjected to modal analysis, XRD analysis, XRF analysis, physical property tests, particle size distribution tests, and slake durability tests. Modal and XRD analysis identified these rocks as biotite granite; secondary alteration minerals were not observed. Physical property tests and particle size distribution analyses indicate an average porosity of 41.28% and a sand content of > 90 wt.%. These values are somewhat higher than those of granites in general. The results of the slake durability test and XRF analyses show that the physical and chemical weathering indices of the samples vary with the degree of weathering.

  • Investigating the physical and chemical properties of riverine wetlands is necessary to understand their distribution characteristics and depositional environment. This study investigated the physical (particle size, color, and type) and chemical properties (organic, inorganic, and moisture contents) of sediments in Samrak wetland, located in the Nakdong River estuary area in Busan, South Korea. The particle size analysis indicated that the hydraulic conductivity values for the coarse grain and the mixture of coarse and fine grains ranged from 2.03 to 3.49×10-1 cm s-1 and 7.18×10-3 to 1.24×10-7 cm s-1, respectively. In-situ water quality and laboratory-based chemical analyses and radon-222 measurement were performed on groundwater and surface water in the wetland and water from the nearby Nakdong River. The physical and chemical properties of Samrak wetland was characterized by the sediments in the vertical and lateral direction. The concentrations of chemical components in the wetland groundwater were distinctly higher than those in the Nakdong River water though the wetland groundwater and Nakdong River water equally belonged to the Ca-HCO3 type.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different energy intake on physical and chemical composition in body fractions, growth performance and meat characteristics of finishing barrows and gilts. A total of twenty six crossbred (Landrace$\times$Yorkshire) consisting of 16 barrows and 13 gilts were used in this study. The animals were allocated by sex to two treatments to form a $2\times2$ factorial arrangement. The respective factors were sex (barrow and gilt) and dietary energy intake (1.8 and 3.0 times energy for maintenance). Pigs were kept in individual pens and had ad libitum access to feed and water from the start of the experiment at $52.4{\pm}1.9kg$ until they reached $109.9{\pm}4.4kg$ live weight. The growth performance, physical composition and meat characteristics of finishing pigs were not greatly affected by the sex. However, higher fat tissue weight in the carcass was observed in barrows compared with gilts (p<0.05). Higher proportions of water and protein (p<0.05), and lower lipid proportion (p<0.01) in the empty body and carcass were observed in gilts compared with barrows, while protein proportion in lean tissue was not affected by the sex. In fat tissue, only protein proportion was higher in gilts compared with barrows (p<0.05). Although, growth performance, physical and chemical compositions in body fractions were greatly affected, final body or carcass weight was partly affected by the energy intake In addition, loin characteristics such as shear force and loin eye area were partly influenced by energy intake levels. Therefore, the present results showed that growth performance and meat characteristics were not influenced but chemical body composition was greatly influenced by the sex. Growth performance, physical and chemical compositions in body fractions were greatly affected, whereas meat characteristics were partly affected by the energy intake levels.

  • Previous reports have shown that Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used to assess physical and chemical properties of flax fibre and fabric quality. Currently, spinners assess yarn quality mainly based on strength and regularity measurements. There two key characteristics are influenced by quality of raw fibres used, especially the degree of rotting and strength. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the use of NIRS for assessing quality of weft grade yarn available on the commercial market. In order to develop the NIR calibrations, a range of samples representing poor, medium and good quality weft yarn samples was included in the calibration and validation sample sets. The samples were analysed for physical and chemical parameters including caustic weight loss, fibre fractions, lipid, ash and minerals. A detailed protocol for assessing yarn quality has been developed to maximize the accuracy of the reflectance spectra. The development of partial least squares regression models and validation of the calibration equations using blind samples will be presented and discussed.

  • The soil from constructed wetland system for sewage treatment was analyzed to examine physical and chemical characteristics. Clogging and lowered permeability were the physical matters of concern, and nutrient and salt accumulation were the chemical matters of concern. However, the soil properties of the constructed wetland system after 3 year operation demonstrated no degradation and still the soil works almost same as the initial stage. Encouragingly, no sludge accumulation was observed inside the system. Therefore, it implies that the wetland sewage treatment system can work continuously as long as it is operated and managed properly not to cause excessive pollutant loading.

  • The ceramic high transition temperature superconducting materials present many interesting characteristics that will be analysed from two points of view: physical behavior, and chemical aspects. From the first point of view, these materials display an enormous variety of different physical properties. At low doping levels the normal state shows antiferromagnetism and insulating behavior. At intermediate doping levels, an anomalous metallic state appears and, the optimum Tc in the superconducting state is generated. With increasing doping a normal metallic state develops and superconductivity starts to disappear. Many of the physical phenomena that describe the overall behavior when doping levels are changed will be discussed. From the poing of view of the chemical aspects. we well discuss some of the problems involved in the methods of preparation with particular emphasis on defects, crystal structures, critical currrents, and applications in technology.

  • The objective of the present study is the development of a comprehensive air chemical kinetic model that includes 11 species and 54 chemical reactions for the numerical investigation of air nonequilibrium inductively coupled plasmas. The two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the electromagnetic-field equations were employed to describe the fundamental characteristics of an inductive plasma. Dunn-Kangs 32 chemical-reaction model of air was reconstructed and used as a comparative model. The effects of the different chemical kinetic models on the flow field were analyzed and discussed at identical/different working pressures. The results theoretically indicate that no matter the working pressure is low or high, the use of the 54 chemical kinetic model presented in this study is a better choice for the numerical simulation of a nonequilibrium air ICP.

  • Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) convert chemical energy to electrical energy via electrochemically active microorganisms. The interactions between microbes and the surface of a carbon electrode play a vital role in capturing the respiratory electrons from bacteria. Therefore, improvements in the electrochemical and physicochemical properties of carbon materials are essential for increasing performance. In this study, a microwave and sulfuric acid treatment was used to modify the surface structure of graphite granules. The prepared expandable graphite granules (EGG) exhibited a 1.5 times higher power density than the unmodified graphite granules (1400 vs. 900 mW/m3). Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed improved physical and chemical characteristics of the EGG surface. These results suggest that physical and chemical surface modification using sulfuric acid and microwave heating improves the performance of electrode-based bioprocesses, such as MFCs.

  • A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of fertilizer application rate and number of harvested leaves per plant on selected agronomic, chemical and physical characteristics of burley tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L. cv Burley 21) in 1988, 1989 and 1990 at Chonju Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng SE Tobacco Research Institute. 175.0 or 227.5 kilogram per 10a of compound fertilizer(N-P2O5-K2O= 10-10-20) were applied as main plot, and 2 or 4 of upper leaves was topped off with 0, 2 or 4 of the lower leaves removed as sub plot. Yield, total alkaloid and total nitrogen content of cured leaves were high in the higher level of compound fertilizer plot, and increasing the level of compound fertilizer had an adverse effect on physical characteristics. Reducing the number of harvested leaves had a negative effect on yield regardless of whether the leaf number was reduced by lower topping or removing the bottom leaves, but increased the rate of higher grades leaves. Differences in total alkaloid, total nitrogen and some physical properties among number of harvested leaf per plant were smaller than expected.
