물리치료원 독립개원의 필요성 (The Necessity of Independent Clinic Open by Physical Therapist in South Korea)

  • Purpose : In this study, by recognizes the legal constraints of a independent physical therapy clinic open, the other countries's law on physical therapist and the expected effect of independent clinic open, we suggest the need for independent clinic open in South Korea. Methods : To recognize the necessity and expected effect of independent physical therapy clinic open, by comparing the system and situation in South Korea with the countries joined in The World Confederation for Physical Therapy. Results : Effects of the independent physical therapy clinic open were following; 1. it could be guaranteed the option of the medical consumer 2. reduce the economic and time burden 3. provide a good quality medical service Conclusion : Independent physical therapy clinic open will provide a better therapeutic environment for consumer and contribute much to improving the benefit of welfare part of the nation. For provide a good quality to medical consumer, independent physical therapy clinic open and the amendment of related law and institutional device are positively necessary.

대한민국 물리치료 임상실습 표준화 방안 (Standardization Plan for Clinical Practice of the Physical Therapy Education in South Korea)

  • Purpose : This study aims to review the physical therapy training programs in the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and Japan, and propose standardization plan for clinical practice in physical therapy education to advance the development of physical therapy education in South Korea. Methods : This study investigates the clinical practice standards in advanced countries such as the United States and Canada, and refers to the clinical practice standards in Taiwan and Japan, which are members of the association of world phyisotherapy and have economic, cultural, educational, and healthcare delivery systems, as well as legal systems, similar to those of South Korea. Results : In the United States, physical therapy education programs allocate an average of 22 weeks and 880 hours for clinical practice. Foreign-trained physical therapists who wish to take the licensure exam in the United States must have their educational programs reviewed and recognized as having completed at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice. In Canada, physical therapy education programs allocate an average of 31 weeks and 1,240 hours for clinical practice. Taiwan allocates over 1,440 hours of clinical practice in its educational programs, while Japan requires 800 hours of clinical practice as a legal prerequisite for the licensure exam. Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, the following standardization plan for clinical practice of the physical therapy education in South Korea are proposed. First, a minimum of 16 weeks and 640 hours of clinical practice is necessary to produce competent physical therapists. Second, university-based basic practical training should be at least 440 hours, with the introduction of a standardized accreditation system and unification of the four-year academic system. Third, the qualifications of physical therapists who supervise clinical practice in medical institutions should be clearly defined in the curriculum, and the standards for clinical practice instructors need to be expanded.

한국 물리치료 정의에 관한 고찰 (The Consideration of Definition of Physical Therapy in South Korea)

  • Purpose : To contribute to the development and globalization of physical therapy in south korea. In the near future setting up the new definition of physical therapy making up for present problem and analysis of the physical therapy business. Methods : Checking the definition of physical therapy be in use, and then we draw a new concept and definition according to the job description at ICF of WHO, WCPT, Korea Job Information System, National Health Personnel Licensing Examination Board Analyses. Results : The existing Definition of the korea physical therapy is focus on physical factor and rehabilitation. But, new Definition of physical therapy is contain prevention, functional limitation, therapy of disorder and be made up of definition more detailed and specialized. Conclusion : If definition of the physical therapy out of WCPT used modify and supplement for Korean society, help globalization as well as public relations of national at the Korea physical therapy and take rights physical therapist.

Review on Physical Therapy for Patients with Vestibular Disorder

  • Effort to improve balance ability in the field of rehabilitation has been constantly issued and developed up to now. A variety of subcomponent of postural control including function and cognition should be needed in many body systems and be complicatedly linked to each system. In South Korea, although decreased postural dysfunction due to neurological or musculoskeletal disorders has been well documented, we do not have many experience and knowledge of vestibular rehabilitation for maintain and improve balance function. In the United States, vestibular physical therapy is already acknowledged as clinical subspecialty by American Physical Therapy Association. However, there is no curriculum subject related to vestibular rehabilitation in standard education of physical therapy and no specialist who has clinical experience and knowledge of this realm. Therefore, we reviewed general information and basic knowledge of vestibular rehabilitation such as current state of vestibular disorder in South Korea, pathology, major causes of vestibular dysfunction including peripheral vestibular disorders, vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and central disorder, evaluation of vestibular dysfunction, and treatment for vestibular dysfunction new approaches. We expect that physical therapist in South Korea recognize clinical significance of vestibular exercise and that clinical concern and research will be begun in near future.

  • Recently, we can see worldwide the rapid increase in the population of the aged people, while that of young people is decreasing. Especially present Japan has a super-aged society, and it is a big social problem how to take effective measures to that in the future, Some items as well as researches have come out of various research them to the user. Such a change in population will be seen also in South Korea. Because South Korea has many social things in common with Japan, though they have different languages. Through this report, it is expected that it will be a good example for Japan PT to expand its activities and will connect to the future joint research of South Korea and Japan, by introducing it to South Korea.

Mental Health of Physical Therapy Students in Clinical Practice during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-sectional Survey in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, South Korea

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental health of physical therapy students in clinical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during the pandemic and was completed by 100 physical therapy students in two universities in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, South Korea. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to evaluate their anxiety and depression status. A Chi-square test was conducted to evaluate the association of participant characteristics with the risk of having anxiety and depression. Logistic regression models were used to identify the general characteristic factors related to anxiety or depression. Results: Anxiety was found in 28 (28%) of the participants, and depression in 24 (24%). The risk of anxiety and depression in male physical therapy students was 0.189 and 0.211 times lower, respectively, than those female students (p<0.05). The risk of anxiety and depression in physical therapy students with a history of disease was 11.721 and 7.056 times higher, respectively, than those with a history of disease (p<0.05). The risk of anxiety in physical therapy students in clinical practice was 11.721 times higher than that in students who were not in clinical practice (p<0.05). Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a high risk of anxiety and depression among many physical therapy students. More attention and improvements are needed so that physical therapy students can study in a safe environment.

한국의 동물물리치료 제도의 필요성과 도입 방법 제언 (The Necessity and Methods for Introduction of Animal Physical Therapy System in South Korea)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to introduce the necessity of introduction and to proposal the methods of introduce for animal physical therapy in Korea. Method : This study is a literature study with books, article and the information through every route for introduction of animal physical therapy in Korea. Results : Animal physical therapy should be introduced to Korea with global trend. For this, it should be need academic exchanges of veterinary and physiotherapy. And there is an urgent need for an educational framework and an institutional framework. And physiotherapist requires preparation and understanding of the animal anatomy. Conclusion : There is an urgent need for an animal physical therapy to welfare and medical benefit of Korean animal companion. The physiotherapist should be prepare educational framework, institutional framework and clinical strategy.

세계 물리치료학과 교과과정 비교 분석 (The Comparison of Curriculums of Physical Therapy Education Department in the World)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate curriculums of physical therapy department in order to provide the basic data for developing educational standard. Methods : We identified the curriculums of physical therapy department in the world from January to may 2010 by internet, e-mail, fax and telephone. We compared the credits, education semesters, the names of departments, the numbers of departments for physical therapy education in all countries of the world and suggested some alternative for improvement. Results : The mean credits of 25 senior colleges were 140 and the mean credits of 22 Junior colleges were 136.6 in south Korea. The mean educational semesters and the mean credits were 9 semesters, 175.8credits of 1,363 universities in 73countries in the world. Of the 1,289 universities in the world, South Korea was ranked the fifth in the number of existing physical therapy education institutions with the number of 72. The name of department were comprised of physical therapy(1,289, 94.6%) and compound name(75, 5.4%) Conclusion : We suggest that the KAPT gradually rearranges senior college(4years), 170 creditS and consider time of community services and forms commission on accreditation in physical therapy education for developing educational standard. Also, we suggest to change the name of department into compound name because the student can have a chance to studies various subjects and get a chance to more occupations. We hope that the results of study can be helpful in order to rearrange the curriculum and the KAPT encourages the universities about following the educational standard.

Falls in Patients of Medical Institutions in South Korea: A Literature Review

  • Background: Like many other countries, falls and related injuries in older adults are great concerns in South Korea. In particular, falls are common in medical institutions, often causing the increase of the length of hospitalization. Objects: The purpose of this review was to help understand and address falls in hospitalized individuals in South Korea. Methods: The review was conducted on literature published in Korean from 2010 to 2022, searched in the Korea Citation Index and PubMed. Keywords used for the search were as follows: falls, fall risk, fall risk assessment, hospital, inpatient, intervention, Korea, and prevention. Results: A total of 54 articles were found and reviewed. The most common place of fall accidents was the inpatient room, where there were many cases of falls while walking. Loss of balance was the most common cause of falls, and many falls occurred in patients admitted to the internal medicine. Furthermore, a risk of falling increased with the type of medications taken. In terms of tools to assess patients' fall risk, the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) was commonly used. Patient-specific fall prevention activities were common to address falls, and they decreased the frequency of falls and the fear of falling. Factors influencing the effectiveness of the fall prevention activities included attitudes toward falls, education, environmental factors, patient safety culture, and self-efficacy in preventing falls. Conclusion: Our results should help understand and address falls and injuries in medical institutions.

노인장기요양보험제도를 통한 방문재활 서비스 도입방안 -서비스 공급주체로서 OECD국가 가정방문물리치료의 고찰- (Inclusion of Home-based Rehabilitation Services in the Long-Term Care Insurance - Review on the Home-based Physical Therapy in the OECD -)

  • The purpose of this study was to expand the home-based rehabilitation services in the long term care insurance. This study was reviewed on the home-based physical therapy in the OECD. The way of this study was literature search and review. This was to reviewed Proquest, Sciencedirect, SpingerLink, Pubmed. Kew word is "home-based therapy". This was collected 71 articles and final analyzed article was 49. The results were as follows; The article number is seven in Canada, fifteen in USA, five in UK, six in Australia, three in Sweden, five in New Zealand, two in Netherlands, one in Turkey, South Korea, Japan, France, Spain, Italy respectively. Randomized controlled trial is fifty, case-control study is eleven, interview is three, literature review is two, and case report, cost-analysis, cost-effectiveness, pilot study, single blinded parallel design, demonstrative study, survey is one respectively. Physical therapist played an important role in home-based rehabilitation among OECD than nurse. Therefore, we must introduce home-based physical therapy in long term care insurance in South Korea.
