  • Recent technological advances made a vehicle more intelligent to increase safety and comfort. An intelligent vehicle provides drivers with safety warning information through audible sounds, visual displays, and tactile devices. However, elderly drivers have been known to decrease the physical and cognitive abilities such as muscular strength, hearing, eyesight, short term memory, and spatial perception. Therefore, possible age-related deficits should be considered to design an effective warning system. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of advancing age on response performance on audible safety warnings which are widely used for alerting driving hazards. In order to understand the effect of age-related hearing loss and movement slowing, three sound characteristics (frequency, intensity, and period) and three age groups (younger, middle, and older) are considered. Data was drawn from 38 drivers who drove a simulated rural road in a driving simulator. Experimental results show that age influences driver's response performance. In conclusion, the appropriate range of a warning sound is suggested.

  • Wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) is the most widely adopted third generation air interface. The physical layer of the air interrace is the main discussion topic during standardization processes. This paper aims to investigate the performance of uplink WCDMA over many conceivable transmission scenarios in realistic operating conditions. The focus of the study is placed on the performance under frequency selective fading channel conditions with multiple access interference (MAI) in mixed services environments. For the investigation, a simulator has been developed and it encompasses a variety of WCDMA air interface features. The results show that the performance is greatly affected by MAI and is further aggravated with the presence of frequency selective fading, thereby necessitating a suitable compensation measure.

  • This paper presents a novel approach for extracting simultaneously human daily activity patterns and discovering the temporal relations of these activity patterns. It is necessary to resolve the services conflict and to satisfy a user who wants to use multiple services. To extract the simultaneous activity patterns, context has been collected from physical sensors and electronic devices. In addition, a context model is organized by the proposed incremental statistical method to determine conflicts and to infer user intentions through analyzing the daily human activity patterns. The context model is represented by the sets of the simultaneous activity patterns and the temporal relations between the sets. To evaluate the method, experiments are carried out on a test-bed called the Ubiquitous Smart Space. Furthermore, the user-intention simulator based on the simultaneous activity patterns and the temporal relations from the results of the inferred intention is demonstrated.

  • This paper discusses the development of an educational web-based power flow program for undergraduate students. The interaction between lectures and users can be much enhanced via the web-based programs which result in the student's learning effectiveness on the power flow problem. However the difficulties for developing web-based application programs are that there can be the numerous unspecified users to access the application programs. To overcome the aforementioned multi-users problem and to develope the educational web-based power flow program, we have revised the system architecture, the modeling of application programs, and database which efficiently and effectively manages the complex data sets related to the power flow analysis program. The developed application program is composed of the physical three tiers where the middle tier is logically divided into two kinds of application programs. The divided application programs are interconnected by using the Web-service based on XML (Extended Markup Technology) and HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) which make it possible the distributed computing technology Also, this paper describes the method of database modeling to handle effectively when the numerous users change the parameters of the power system to compare the results of the base case.

  • Detection and diagnosis of incipient bearing fault in an induction motor is important for the prevention of serious motor failure. This paper presents an analysis of the effect of a faulty bearing on the stator current of an induction motor. A bearing fault leads to torque oscillations which result in phase modulation of the stator current. Since the torque oscillations cause specific frequency components at the stator current spectrum to rise sharply, the bearing fault can be detected by checking out the faultrelated frequency. In this paper, a mathematical model of the load torque oscillation caused by a bearing fault is presented. The proposed model can be used to analyze the physical phenomenon of a bearing fault in an induction motor. In order to represent the bearing fault effect, the proposed model is combined with an existing model of vector-controlled induction motors. A set of simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and represent that bearing fault detection using a stator current is useful for vector-controlled induction motors.

  • We provided a model for accurately computing the Hysteresis characteristics of the ferrelectric thin film capacitors. This model is developed form the semi-empirical ferroelectric model based on the double well harmonic oscillator. We have seen that this model is consistent with physical analysis using the Preisach's hysteresis distribution. This model includes the parameters representing the slope of changing Hysteresis curves and the imprint of ferroelectric capacitors. Besides, we showed that this model could predict accurate sub-hystersis loop by the turning points when the polarities of applied voltage were changed before saturation. The simulation and measurement result showed that this model is well applicable to both PZT and SBT materials. This model has been described by AHDL and successfully implemented into Spectre simulator to provide circuit design environment of commercial CAD tools such as Cadence software.

  • Advances in wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have enabled small and low-cost sensors with the capability of sensing various types of physical and environmental conditions, data processing, and wireless communication. In the WSN, the sensor nodes have a limited transmission range and their processing and storage capabilities as well as their energy resources are limited. A triple umpiring system has already been proved for its better performance in WSNs. The clustering technique is effective in prolonging the lifetime of the WSN. In this study, we have modified the ad-hoc on demand distance vector routing by incorporating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based dynamic clustering. The proposed scheme, which is an efficient and secure routing protocol for wireless sensor networks through SNR-based dynamic clustering (ESRPSDC) mechanisms, can partition the nodes into clusters and select the cluster head (CH) among the nodes based on the energy, and non CH nodes join with a specific CH based on the SNR values. Error recovery has been implemented during the inter-cluster routing in order to avoid end-to-end error recovery. Security has been achieved by isolating the malicious nodes using sink-based routing pattern analysis. Extensive investigation studies using a global mobile simulator have shown that this hybrid ESRP significantly improves the energy efficiency and packet reception rate as compared with the SNR unaware routing algorithms such as the low energy aware adaptive clustering hierarchy and power efficient gathering in sensor information systems.

  • A $1"{\times}l"$, $512{\times}512$ poly-Si TFT-LCD with a new integrated 8-bit parallel-serial digital data driver was proposed and designed. For high resolution, the proposed parallel-serial digital driver used serial video data rather than parallel ones. Thus, digital circuits for driving one column line could be integrated within very small width. The parallel-serial digital data driver comprised of shift registers, latches, and serial digital-to-analog converters (DAC's). We designed a $1"{\times}l"$, $512{\times}512$ poly-Si TFT-LCD with integrated 8-bit parallel-serial digital data drivers by a circuit simulator which has physical-based analytical model of poly-Si TFT's. The fabricated shift register well operated at 2 MHz and $V_{DD}$=10V and the fabricated poly-Si TFT serial DAC's, which converts serial digital data to an analog signal, could convert one bit within $2.8{\mu}s$. The driver circuits for one data line occupied $8100{\times}50{\mu}m^2$ with $4{\mu}m$ design rule.

  • In this paper, we study the transient characteristics of 4H-SiC DMOSFETs with different interface charges to improve the turn-on rising time. A physics-based two-dimensional mixed device and circuit simulator was used to understand the relationship between the switching characteristics and the physical device structures. As the $SiO_2$/SiC interface charge increases, the current density is reduced and the switching time is increased, which is due primarily to the lowered channel mobility. The result of the switching performance is shown as a function of the gate-to-source capacitance and the channel resistance. The results show that the switching performance of the 4H-SiC DMOSFET is sensitive to the channel resistance that is affected by the interface charge variations, which suggests that it is essential to reduce the interface charge densities in order to improve the switching speed in 4H-SiC DMOSFETs.

  • Full-duplex (FD) technologies enable wireless nodes to simultaneously transmit and receive signal using the same frequency-band. The FD modes could improve their physical layer throughputs. However, in the wireless ad hoc networks, the FD communications also produce new interference risks. On the one hand, the interference ranges (IRs) of the nodes are enlarged when they work in the FD mode. On the other hand, for each FD pair, the FD communication may cause the potential hidden terminal problems to appear around the both sides. In this paper, to avoid the interference risks, we first model the IR of each node when it works in the FD mode, and then analyze the conditions to be satisfied among the transmission ranges (TRs), carrier-sensing ranges (CSRs), and IRs of the FD pair. Furthermore, in the media access control (MAC) layer, we propose a specific method and protocol for collision avoidance. Based on the modified Omnet++ simulator, we conduct the simulations to validate and evaluate the proposed FD MAC protocol, showing that it can reduce the collisions effectively. When the hidden terminal problem is serious, compared with the existing typical FD MAC protocol, our protocol can increase the system throughput by 80%~90%.
