Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of foam roller (FR) stretching, kinesiotaping (KT), and dynamic stretching (DS) on gait parameters after inducing muscle fatigue in the ankle joint. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The subjects were thirty healthy young adults between the ages of 20 and 31 years at Baekseok University who voluntarily participated in this study. The participants were randomly assigned to either the FR group, KT group, or the DS group after inducing muscle fatigue of the ankle joint. Fatigue induction of the ankle joint muscles was performed by alternating a heel up and down exercise with the standing posture on the ground. The speed was maintained at 40 beats/minute using a metronome. Subsequently, the respective intervention was applied to each group. Gait parameters were measured before and after ankle muscle fatigue induction, and after intervention using the GAITRite system. One-way ANOVA was used to compare gait parameters among groups, while repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare gait parameters within each intervention group. Results: The FR group increased significantly in velocity, step length, and stride length except for cadence after intervention compared to after ankle muscle fatigue induction (p<0.01). Furthermore, the KT group showed significant increases in velocity, cadence, step length, and stride length after intervention, especially in cadence group (p<0.05). All intervention groups showed significant increases in stride length after intervention, especially the DS group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Therefore, we suggest that KT, FR, and DS can be an effective intervention on gait parameters when the ankle joint is unstable and injured.
The purpose of this study was to compare the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of three methods for measuring iliotibial tract length in 40 knees of 20 subjects. The measurements were performed by two examiners and one assistant. The length of the iliotibial tract was measured using three methods: the first used a modified Ober test with an inclinometer, the second used a modified Ober test with a marker, and the third used active adduction test with a marker in the supine position. Each examiner used the three methods in two sessions. For the first method, the inclinometer value was recorded manually. For the second and third methods, Image J analysis software was used to analyze the photographs taken. The intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the measured value was assessed by means of intra-class correlation coefficients [ICC (3,1)] and the standard error of measurement. The intra-rater reliabilities of the three methods were excellent (ICC=.97, .95, and .94, respectively), and the inter-rater reliabilities of the first and second methods were fair to good (ICC=.64 and .65, respectively). The inter-rater reliability of the third method was excellent (ICC=.88). Our results suggest that the active adduction test is an objective and qualitative measurement method for measuring iliotibial tract length. We recommend that the active adduction test be used for measuring iliotibial tract length in the clinical setting.
The goal of this study is to support the children's pants construction methods that secure clothing size and fit appropriateness through proposed improvements of denim pants construction method focusing on 4-year-old boys. Depths interview on the actual condition, measurements and calculations for positions and ease of the clothing points corresponding to the body points actually worn were conducted for 47 denim pants of nine boys. "Characteristics of the areas worn" and "physical characteristics of lower body" were analyzed, and improvements of 4-year-old children's denim pants construction method were proposed. As the results, the different figures in "characteristics of the areas worn" between the existing children's pants construction methods and children's actual wearing habits were found, and identification of distinct children's lower body from adults' supports that we should avoid tracing adults' methods without reasons. Children's pants construction method on basis of actual wearing should be devised to solve fit problems. Improvements of children's method were proposed such as ease of girth by different area worn, ease of "elastic waist girth", the difference between "elastic waist girth" and "pattern waist girth", and the difference between "pattern waist girth" and "pattern hip girth" as considerations of pants girth items, and appropriate position "clothing waist girth" "pants hip length" level, "pants crotch length" level, "clothing knee length" level, and "pants outside length" level for pattern making as considerations of clothing length items.

PURPOSE: We investigated the influence of heel insole and visual control on body sway index with high-heeled shoes. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 61 healthy students. None of the participants had any orthopedic or neurologic alterations. C90 area, C90 angle, trace length, sway average velocity were measured using a force plate by BT4. The variables were measured both with insole and without insole when wearing high-heeled shoes under the conditions of eyes open and eyes closed. The collected data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and paired t-test. RESULTS: When wearing high-heeled shoes with insole under the conditions of eyes open, trace length, C90 area, velocity were significantly more decreased than without insole (p<.01). When wearing high-heeled shoes with insole under the conditions of eyes closed, only C90 area was significantly more decreased than without insole (p<.05). When wearing high-heeled shoes with insole under the conditions of eyes open, trace length, C90 area, velocity were significantly more decreased than under the conditions of eyes closed (p<.01). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates that the use of high-heeled shoes with insole supported from heel to midfoot more increased static balance than without insole under the conditions of eyes open.

Methods: Adjuvant Induced Arthritis was induced 24 Sprague-Dawley rat by the subcutaneous injection of a 0.2ml Freund's Complete Adjuvant into the right hind paw and right knee joint. Second injection used of 0.05ml Freund's Complete Adjuvant by same method. Arthritic rat were divided 3 groups; arthritic swimming group, arthritic laser group and case control group. The author performed several experimental tests which were the hind paw thickness, step length, knee joint space, activity of enzyme. Results: Hind paw thickness decreased in swimming and laser group. Left step length and knee joint space increased in swimming and laser. Conclusion: Swimming and low power laser therapy on the Adjuvant Induced Arthritis in rats does effective for the rheumatic arthritis therapy by decrease of hind paw thickness, increase of opposite side step length, increase of activity of albumin and IgG and increase of knee joint space.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of kindergarten's factors on athletic movement ability in early childhood. The factors included teacher's perception of athletic movement, length of time for physical activity, and number of athletic facilities in the kindergarten. The subjects consisted of 551 children aged from four to five years in 8 private kindergartens. The instruments used for this study were the obstacle course of Project Spectrum for measuring athletic movement ability, and the questionnaire to investigate the teacher's perception, length of time for physical activity, and number of athletic facilities in the kindergarten. The data from all the tests were analyzed by correlation and regression analyses. The results of this study exhibited that the length of time for physical activity was the most important factor among three factors, and the teachers' perception of athletic movement and the number of athletic facilities in the kindergarten were also deciding factors for the children's athletic movement ability.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of the physical properties of wick on the water absorption of substrate. Physical properties of wick in this study were cotton composition, width and length. The water Infiltration rate through the wick was 0.24 ㎝/s at 90 -95% cotton content, which was faster than at 80-85% (0.13 cm/s) and 70-75% (0.08 cm/s). As the cotton content increased, the water absorption of substrate became greater : the amount of absorbed water was about 5-7g higher at 90-95% than at 80-85% and 70-75% at a wick width of 1 ㎝, the velocity of water absorption through the wick was fastest with 0.25 ㎝ㆍs/sup -1/. The amount of absorbed water was higher at 3 ㎝ than at 1 and 2 ㎝. However, the water absorption rate through the cross - sectional area of wick (g H₂O /㎠/hr) was higher at a wick width of 2 ㎝ than at those of 1 and 3 ㎝. The amount of absorbed water in the substrate was higher at 2 : 1 than at 1 : 1 (length in substrate : length out of substrate). Absorbed water amount was larger at 30-40% initial moisture content than any other treatment.

Background: Ankle instability usually occurs after stroke, and contributes to unsafe walking and associated risk of falling in the affected patients. Objective: To investigate the effects of kinesiology taping (KT) on gait and balance ability (center of pressure, CoP) in patients with ankle instability after stroke. Design: One group, pre-post design. Methods: A total of 11 patients with ankle instability after stroke were enrolled. In all subjects, the gait and balance ability were assessed under 2 conditions: KT and barefoot. Gait and balance ability was assessed using GAITRite system and FDM-S platform. Results: Comparison between KT and barefoot condition, KT condition was significantly higher in velocity, cadence, step length, and stride length than barefoot condition (P<.05). KT condition was significantly lower in CoP path length and sway speed than barefoot condition (P<.05). Conclusion: KT indicated potential as a helpful method for walking and balancing ability in patients with ankle instability after stroke. Therefore, this study recommends KT as an option applicable to the stroke with ankle instability.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of active vibration exercise of upper limb on physical capacity index (endurance, grip strength, balance, and flexibility) and vasomotor index (capillary length and body surface temperature) in middle aged women. 20 participants randomly divided into two groups: vibro-swing exercise (VSE) and non vibro-swing exercise (NVSE). Subjects in each group measured the 30 second arm curl test, hand dynamometer, one leg standing test, back scratch test, nail fold capillary microscope (NFM), and digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) before and after exercise. The results showed that active vibration exercise of upper limb with vibro-swing equipment increased the endurance, balance ability, and the capillary length. In addition, changes in body temperature immediately after exercise were predicted to affect vasomotor. Active vibration exercise of upper limb has the advantage of being able to exercise anywhere regardless of the location by inducing different frequency changes in movement of various ranges and velocity. For this reason, the combination of vibration and active movement can be expected the physiological effects when producing exercise programs for middle aged women.

In this study, the general theory of fractality is discussed to provide a fundamental understanding of fractal geometry applied to heterogeneous material surfaces like pavement surface and rock surface. It is well known that many physical phenomena and systems are chaotic, random and that the features of roughness are found at a wide spectrum of length scales from the length of the sample to the atomic scales. Studying the mechanics of these physical phenomena, it is absolutely necessary to characterize such multi scaled rough surfaces and to know the structural property of such surfaces at all length scales relevant to the phenomenon. This study emphasizes the role of fractal geometry to characterize the roughness of various surfaces. Pavement roughness and rock surface roughness were examined to correlate their roughness property to fractality.
