  • Dynamics of contact ion-pair between 1, 2, 4, 5-tetracyanobenzene anion and cation of biphenyl derivatives was investigated on the picosecond time scale. Solvent effect on the electron transfer was observed and electron transfer rates were examined using Marcus equation which contains distance dependence of the electron transfer rate in the frequency factor, along with the consideration of molecular shape. From the discussion based on disk model for molecular shape, contribution of interring torsional motion of biphenyl to the inner-sphere reorganization energy is strongly suggested, which leads to the physical explanation for the observed solvent effect on the rate of electron transfer.

  • It is very difficult to analyze the transient temperature distribution during quenching of the steel because of coupled effects among temperature, structures and stresses. In this paper, using Inoue's equation of evolution and mixture rule, transient temperature distribution is calculated by the finite element method considering latent heat of transformation structure and temperature dependence of physical and mechanical prperties for the 0.45% carbon cylindrical steel bar with 40mm diameter and 20mm height during end-quenching.

  • The viscometric technique is used to study the effects of microstructure on the viscosity (viscosity vs. concentration or shear rate) of magnetic particle suspensions. In this characterization, measurement of suspension viscosity is used to obtain the dependence of viscous energy dissipation on microstructural state of dispersions. Microstructural shape effects which are related to particle orientation are then indirectly obtained. Empirical formulas from mean field theory and the Mooney equation, which are applicable at high concentration of magnetic particles, are used to relate viscosity to particle concentration. The validity and physical meaning of these equations are discussed.

  • Morphine is a potent analgesic and addictive substance. Morphine produces neurotoxicity such as rewarding effect, analgesic tolerance and physical dependence. It has been restricted to the use of morphine in patients because of these problems. The present study was investigated the effect of berberine on the neurotoxicity of morphine. Repeated administration of morphine produced conditioned place prefernece (CPP) and behavioral sensitization in mice. (omitted)

  • The bending properties, wrinkle resistance, and fabric retention behaviors of cotton knitted fabrics in the wale and course directions were studied for their dependence upon resin finishing, knit structure, and washing cycles. Stiffness, wrinkle recovery angles, and dimensional stability were investigated before and after resin finishing and laundering. It has been found that any change in the physical properties of the knitted fabrics with respect to knit structure and fabric directions are related to accompanying modifications to the state of the fiber properties. The decrease of fabric shrinkage rates and wrinkle recovery properties from increasing laundering cycles is related with resin incorporated on the fiber surface. This study shows that resin finishing on knitted fabrics can be performed only to improve fabric retention properties with reduced wrinkle recovery properties.

  • The kinetics of cation reequilibration have been studied theoretically and experimentally in complex oxides after an external perturbation of equilibrium by temperature jumps. A general kinetic model for cation redistribution amongst non-equivalent sites in complex oxides is derived based on a local homogeneous point defect mechanism involving cation vacancies. Temperature-jump optical relaxation spectroscopy has been established to investigate cation kinetic processes in spinels and olivines. The kinetic model satisfactorily describes the experimental absorbance relaxation kinetics in cobalt containing olivines and in nickel containing spinels. It is found that the kinetics of cation redistribution in complex oxides shows a strong temperature- and composition-dependence. Activation energies for cation redistribution in Co-Mg olivines are found to range between 200 and 220 kJ/mol whereas an energy barrier of about 230 kJ/mol is observed in the case of nickel gallate spinel.

  • To use dielectric material of high power multilayer capacitor, the composition of the commercial CaTiO3 was changed to decrease the sintering temperature, and the physical and electrical properties were investigated. Series of experiments showed that CaTiO3 with sintering additives had the highest density, the highest shrinkage, the lowest dielectric constant, the lowest loss factor, and the lowest temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC). These properties had the constant values at sintering temperature of above 120$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Polyynes were prepared by liquid laser ablation of a graphite target in deionized water at various physical conditions such as laser power (20 and 40 mJ/pulse) and ablation wavelengths (355, 532, and 1064 nm). The effects of physical parameters on the linear carbon chain length were examined by analyzing the densities of polyynes with different carbon numbers ($C_6H_2$, $C_8H_2$, and $C_{10}H_2$) as well as their branching ratios. We concluded the photophysical processes turned out to play a more significant role than thermal ones in the formation of polyynes.

  • Erythromycin was formulated as enteric-coated pellets in order to reduce degradation in stomach and gastromtestmal irritation, and to maximize the absorption in intestine followmg its oral administration. Core pellets were prepared using fluid-bed granulator with two different methods (powder layering and solvent spraying) and enteric-coated with two different coating polymers (HPMCP and Eudragit E30D). Physical characteristics md dissolution rates of core pellets and enteric-coated pellets were evaluated to optimize the formulation. Powder layering method resulted in shorter initial dissolution time than solvent spraying method, but physicochmical properties of the product were worse than solvent spraying method with respect to hardness, ftiability and density. The dissolution rate of the drug was increased with the addition of surfactants, showing concentration-dependence. The scanning electron microscopic observation of pellets revealed significant differences on the surface appearances prepared with solvent spraying method. The core pellet made with powder layering method had crystals on the surface, which resulted in poor physical properties of the pellets. The dissolution profiles of erythromycin pellets coated with HPMCP or Eudragit L30D were close to that of commercially available erythromycin enteric-coated product.

  • In this study, the electronic structures and physical properties of Ni$_2$MnGa alloy films and their dependence on the order-disorder structural transitions were investigated. The results show that the ordered films behave nearly the same as the bulk $Ni_2$MnGa alloy, including the martensitic transformation at 200 K. Unexpectedly, the disordering in $Ni_2$MnGa alloy films does not lead to any appreciable magnetic ordering down to 4 K. An annealing of the disordered films restores the ordered structure with an almost full recovery of the magnetic and the transport properties of the ordered $Ni_2$MnGa alloy films. A possible explanation of the disappearance of magnetic moment in the disordered film is given by using the ab initio first-principles electronic-structure calculations.
