Growth and photosynthetic responses of one $C_3$ and two $C_4$ plants in the family Chenopodiaceae in three $CO_2$ concentration $([CO_2])$ conditions-low (about $243{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$, LC), present (about 378, PC), and high (about 465, HC)-were investigated in open top chambers. The relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate in the $C_3$ plant, Chenopodium album, increased with increasing $[CO_2]$, though the RGR was not enhanced significantly in the HC condition. The leaf area ratio and leaf weight ratio of the $C_3$ plant drastically decreased with increasing $[CO_2]$, suggesting that the $C_3$ plant invests more biomass to leaves in lower $[CO_2]$ conditions. The two $C_4$ plants, Atriplex glauca and A. lentiformis, showed relatively small changes in those growth parameters. These photosynthetic-pathway-dependent responses suggest that growth patterns of $C_3$ and $C_4$ plants have been altered by past increases in atmospheric $[CO_2]$ but that there will be relatively little further alteration in the future high-$CO_2$ world.
Chlorella ellipsoidea cells were cultured in an iron, copper, zinc, manganese, molybdenum or boron-free medium. Physiological activities such as growth rate, reproduction, endogenous and glucose respiration, photosynthetic activity and biosythesis of chlorophyll of the micro-element definition cells were measured. It generally, growth rate, respiratory and photosynthetic activities, and biosynthesis of chlorophyll of the micro-element deficient cells decreased more or less, compared with those of the normal cells. The growth of the algal cells in an iron-free medium were retarded severely with the chlorosis, and the photosynthetic activity of the cells decreased remarkably even though the low content of chlorophyll in the cells owing to the iron-deficiency is considered. Therefore, it is deduced that iron takes part in the photosynthetic process itself, possibly by its participation in the photo phosphorylation coupled with electron transport. Respiratory activity of boron-deficient cells showed the most severe decrease whereas those of the molybdenum-deficient cells showed very slight decrease in spite of severe growth retardation.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of shading material on the chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and its any correlations in Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer. Fo was higher in polyethylene shade net than in silver-coated shading plate, but this treatment caused a lower Fm in comparison with silver-coated shading plate. Also, Fv/Fm and PhiPS2 showed higher in silver-coated shading plate than in polyethylene shade net. The relationship between net photosynthetic rate and transpiration, stomatal conductance were increased as the PAR (Photosynthetic active radiation) was increased and reached maximum at the $200-400\;{\mu}mol/m^{2}/s$ of PAR in all of leaves, and the higher in silver-coated shading plate than in polyethylene shade net. A linear equation was obtained between net photosynthetic rate and transpiration, net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance. SPAD was higher in silver-coated shading plate than in polyethylene shade net.
$CO_2$ uptake of vegetation is one of the important variables in order to estimate photosynthetic activity, plant growth and carbon budget estimations. The objective of this research was to develop a new estimation method of $CO_2$ uptake of vegetation based on airborne hyperspectral remote sensing measurements in combination with a photosynthetic rate curve model. In this study, a compact airborne spectrographic imager (CASI) was used to obtain image over a field that had been set up to study the $CO_2$ uptake of corn on August 7, 2002. Also, a field survey was conducted concurrently with the CASI overpass. As a field survey, chlorophyll a content, photosynthetic rate curve, Leaf area, dry biomass and light condition were measured. The developed estimation method for $CO_2$ uptake consists of three major parts: a linear mixture model, an enhanced big leaf model and a photosynthetic rate curve model. The Accuracy of this scheme indicates that $CO_2$ uptake of vegetation could be estimated by using airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data in combination with a physiological model.
Barnyardgrass had relatively higher growth vigor at the earlier growth stage than inbred rice did, showing the 2 fold higher $\alpha$-amylase activity during the periods of germination and large leaf area Expansion with high net photosynthetic rate at the earlier autotrophic stage, but it performed weak growth at the late growth stage. However, the hlybrid rice Shanyou 63 had significantly higher $\alpha$-amylase activity and net photosynthetic rate than that of barnyardgrass, exhibiting heterosis for two physiologica1 traits during the germination (6~12 days) and autotrophic phase, respectively. Accordingly, hybrid rice, Shanyou 63, exhibited heterotic effect at the early growing stage when were presented with barnyardgrass. Shanyou 63 exhibited stronger tillering ability, faster leaf area expansion and higher net photosynthetic rate than those of barnyardgrass.

Foliar treatment with different concentrations of potassium chloride (KCl) to mulberry plants resulted in higher level of total chlorophyll, total sugars, soluble protein, in vivo nitrate reductase activity (NRA), net photosynthetic rate (NPR), pWUE and leaf yield. Optimal concentration was found to be 10.0 mM KCl with limited irrigation provided in the mulberry plantation planted in 90 ${times}$ 90 cm spacing. The deleterious effect of soil moisture stress condition has been found to be overcome by KCl foliar spray twice at 15 days interval. Regression and correlation coefficients were analyzed, and a strong positive correlation was found between chlorophyll and total sugars, soluble protein and in vivo nitrate reductase activity, leaf dry weight and net photosynthetic rate and pWUE and net photosynthetic rate.
Photosynthetic characteristics of soybean leaves infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea were investigated for 8 days. The difference in photosynthesis rate between healthy and diseased soybean leaves decreased for 2 to 4 days after inoculation and then increased. In respiration rate, healthy and diseased leaves showed the same tendency as photosynthetic rate. The stomatal resistance increased following Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection. The total chlorophyll content of the infected leaf was less than that of the uninfected. Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection induced the malformation of stacked grana in chloroplast. Dry matter production declined after infection.
To investigate effects of water stress on apparent photosynthetic, transpiration rates, leaf orientation, yield and its related traits, four soybean varieties were planted on the Wagner pots in a plastic house covered with polyethylene film. As the light intensity and leaf temperature in a day increased, the movement of central leaflet in the second leaf of main stem occurred earlier than that of the lateral leaflet. The apparent photosynthetic rate of the central leaflet was higher than that of the lateral leaflet, but light intercept and leaf temperature of lateral leaflet were higher than those of the central leaflet. The apparent photosynthetic rate had highly positive correlation with the photon flux density, stomatal conductance and temperature, respectively. The photon flux density, stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthetic rates in the control were significantly higher than those in the water stress plot. The yield and its related traits in the water stress plot became decreased significantly in comparison with the control.

Background: Epilobium hirsutum L. is designated as an endangered plant in South Korea located in Asia, due to the destruction of its habitats through the development of wetlands. Therefore, in this study, in order to find a light condition suitable for the growth and ecophysiological responses of Epilobium hirsutum L., those of this plant under treatment with various light qualities in a smart farm were measured. Results: In order to examine the changes in the physiological and growth responses of Epilobium hirsutum L. according to the light qualities, the treatment with light qualities of the smart farm was carried out using the red light: blue light irradiation time ratios of 1:1, 1:1/2, and 1:1/5 and a red light: blue light: white light irradiation time ratio of 1:1:1. As a result, the ecophysiological responses (difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature, transpiration rate, net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 partial pressure, photosynthetic quantum efficiency) to light qualities appeared differently according to the treatments with light qualities. The increase in the blue light ratio increased the difference between the leaf temperature and the atmospheric temperature and the photosynthetic quantum efficiency and decreased the transpiration rate and the intercellular CO2 partial pressure. On the other hand, the white light treatment increased the transpiration rate and intercellular CO2 partial pressure and decreased the temperature difference between the leaf temperature and the ambient temperature and photosynthetic quantum efficiency. Conclusions: The light condition suitable for the propagation by the stolons, which are the propagules of Epilobium hirsutum L., in the smart farm, is red, blue and white mixed light with high net photosynthetic rates and low difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature.
This study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic response to four sequential air influx rate with rice(Oryza sativa L.)plants moved from a natural condition to constant condition with automatic regulation selected environmental variables on 13th~15th days after anthesis. In time course of photosynthetic response to increasing air influx rate(200-280-360-440 ml / min.), stomatal conductance decreased rapidly at the beginning after treatment and then oscillated with a free-running period of a approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes until reached up to steady-state condition. Similar change was also observed $CO_2$ assimilation rate. Stomatal conductance decreased throughout the air influx rate sequence, but the rate of decrease was similar to the decrease in $CO_2$ assimilation rate observed under continuous air influx rate conditions. In starch granules during grain filling period under air influx rate(440 ml / min.) , compound starch granules were loosing and a number of hollows were observed in surface of single starch granules. Evidences from several approaches indicate that synchronization of stomatal conductance and$CO_2$ assimilation rate was closely inter-related tinder increase of air influx rate and increase of air influx rate influenced the$CO_2$ uptake in photosynthetic processes and compound starch granule, as 'end products' of photosynthesis.
