In this paper, a Raman spectrometer is designed to detect chemicals contaminating the ground. The system is based on Raman spectroscopy, which is spectral analysis of scattered light from chemicals, induced by a laser. The system consists of a transmitting-optics module with a laser to induce Raman-scattered light from the sample, a receiving-optics module to collect the scattered light, and a spectrograph to separate the collected light into a wavelength spectrum. The telescope, a part of the receiving-optics module, is designed to produce a focal spot in the same position for variable measurement distances using the code V simulator, considering the distance change between the system and the road. The Raman spectra of 12 chemicals on a glass surface and on a concrete sample were measured. Intensity differences between the Raman spectra acquired on a glass surface and on a concrete sample were observed, but the characteristics of the spectra according to the chemicals on them were similar. Additionally, the Raman spectrum of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) was measured at various distances. The measured and simulated optical throughputs were similar. In conclusion, it is confirmed that with this system the Raman spectrum can be measured, irrespective of the distance change.

The optical characteristics of high-power direct-lit white light-emitting diode (LED) lighting were investigated, where a quantum dot (QD) film was adopted to enhance the color-rendering index (CRI). The transmittance of the diffuser plate and the concentration of the QD film were varied in this study. The color coordinates and the correlated color temperature (CCT) did not show any appreciable change, while the CRI values increased slightly as the transmittance of the diffuser plate decreased. The investigated optical properties were nearly independent of the viewing angle, and the luminance distribution was close to Lambertian. The CCT decreased from approximately 6000 K to approximately 4000 K as the concentration of the QD film increased from 0 to 7.5 wt%, which was due to the enhanced red component in the emission spectrum. The CRI increased to approximately 95 for some optical configurations of the lighting. These results demonstrate that glare-free, color-changeable, high-rendering LED lighting can be realized by using a combination of a diffuser plate of appropriate transmittance and a red QD film.

Conventional white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for lighting applications consist of blue LEDs and yellow phosphors, the spectrum of which lacks deep red. To improve the color-rendering characteristics of white LEDs, a red quantum-dot film was applied to the diffuser plate of LED lighting. The mean free paths of the quantum dots and the concentration of the TiO2 particles in the diffuser plate were adjusted to optimize the optical structure of the lighting. The color-rendering index (CRI) was greater than 90 for most conditions, which demonstrates that adoption of the red quantum-dot film is an effective way for improving the color-rendering properties of conventional white LEDs. The angular dispersion of color coordinates could be removed by utilizing the optical cavity formed between the diffuser plate and the reflector on the bottom of the lighting, where multiple passages of the light through the quantum-dot film reduced the differences in optical path length depending on the viewing angle.
In this paper, we design and construct the equipment to manufacture large-diameter optical fiber end caps, which are the core parts of high-power fiber lasers, and we fabricate large-diameter optical fiber end caps using the home-made equipment. This equipment consists of a CO2 laser as a fusion-splice heat source, a precision stage assembly for transferring the position of a large-diameter optical fiber and an end cap, and a vision system used for alignment when the fusion splice is interlocked with the stage assembly. The output of the laser source is interlocked with the stage assembly to control the output, and the equipment is manufactured to align the polarization axis of the large-diameter polarization-maintaining optical fiber with the vision system. Optical fiber end caps were manufactured by laser fusion splicing of a large-diameter polarization-maintaining optical fiber with a clad diameter of 400 ㎛ and an end cap of 10×5×2 ㎣ (W×D×H) using home-made equipment. Signal-light insertion loss, polarization extinction ratio, and beam quality M2 of the fabricated large-diameter optical fiber end caps were measured to be 0.6%, 16.7 dB, and 1.21, respectively.
In this study we suggest a humidity-sensitive color sensor using a one-dimensional photonic crystal and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-1 (HKUST-1), which is a metal-organic framework (MOF) substance. One-dimensional photonic crystals have a photonic band gap, due to a periodic refractive-index change, and block and reflect light components in a specific wavelength band. The refractive index of HKUST-1 differs in dry and humid environments. Herein we designed a sensor using the presence of the photonic band gap, with FDTD simulation. As a result of optical analysis, the color conversion of the reflected light was superior to the color conversion of the transmitted light. When the center wavelength of the photonic band gap was 550 nm, the maximum peak value of the wet environment increased by a factor of about 9.5 compared to the dry environment, and the color conversion from achromatic to green was excellent as a sensor. The results of this study suggest the application of MOF materials to moisture sensors, and the nanostructure design of MOF materials will expand the applications to industrial devices.
In this paper, a low-cost optical temperature sensor is implemented, using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as the temperature probe and a low-cost VCSEL with temperature-dependent output wavelength as the light source. To analyze the wavelength of the reflected light from the FBG, an interrogation was applied using a method of referring to the internal temperature according to the output wavelength of the VCSEL. When the temperature of the VCSEL was adjusted from 14 to $52.2^{\circ}C$, the output wavelength varied from 1519.90 to 1524.25 nm. The degree of wavelength tuning according to temperature was $0.114nm/^{\circ}C$. The variable wavelength repeatability error according to temperature was ${\pm}0.003nm$, and the temperature measurement error was ${\pm}0.18^{\circ}C$. As a result of measuring the temperatures from 22.3 to $194.2^{\circ}C$, the value of the internal temperature change of the light source according to the applied temperature ${\Delta}T$ was $0.146^{\circ}C/{\Delta}T$, the change in reflected wavelength of the temperature probe according to applied temperature ${\Delta}T$ was measured at $16.64pm/^{\circ}C$. and the temperature measurement error of the sensor was ${\pm}1^{\circ}C$.
In this study we propose a hybrid color-filter design method in which a nanohole array and a nanodisk array are separated by nanopillars of the material AZ 1500. We propose a design method for an RGB color filter, using the tendency of transmitted light according to each design variable. Especially we analyzed the intensity distribution of the electric field in the cross section, and set the height of the nanopillars so that the local surface-plasmon resonances generated in the two different arrays do not affect each other. The optical characteristics of the optimized color filter are as follows: In the case of the red filter, the ratio of the wavelength band expressing red in the visible broadband is 55.01%, and the maximum transmittance is 41.53%. In the case of the green filter, the ratio of the wavelength band expressing green is 40.20%, and the maximum transmittance is 42.41%. In the case of the blue filter, the ratio of the wavelength band expressing blue is 32.78%, and the maximum transmittance is 30.27%. We expect to improve the characteristics of color filters integrated in industrial devices by this study.

Normally, a corner cube retroreflector (CCRR) sheet is used as a retroreflective mirror array (RRMA) in a volumetric display. Each CCRR unit reflects light in the retroreflective direction, which is parallel to the incident light, and it makes a blurred image, as it shifts the position of light within its dimensions. Adopting a "curved planar wall" and "parabolic focusing" (x-axis), a hybrid-t(transverse direction)-RRMA is proposed, to improve the image quality and brightness. The improvement of image contrast is achieved by tuning a "linear v-shaped groove" structure to a "parabolic v-shaped groove". Also, the system has been simplified and the brightness enhanced 4 times by removing the half mirror.
We have used a mid-IR (mid-infrared) continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), developed previously and described in Ref. 12, to build a performance-evaluation setup for a mid-IR spectrometer. The used CW OPO had a wavelength tuning range of $ 2.5-3.6{\mu}m$ using a pump laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a fan-out MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) nonlinear crystal in a concentric cavity design. The OPO was combined with a near-IR integrating sphere and a Fourier-transform IR optical spectrum analyzer to build a performance-evaluation setup for mid-IR spectrometers. We applied this performance-evaluation setup to evaluating a mid-IR spectrometer developed domestically, and demonstrated the capability of evaluating the performance, such as spectral resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, spectral stray light, and so on, based on this setup.
In this paper, a wedge prism application method was studied to design a full-high-definition (FHD)-class high-resolution flexible endoscope. In the case of the conventional flexible endoscope optical system, the F number is made large or a liquid lens is applied to obtain the same imaging performance in a wide depth of field. However, there is a problem in that the diameter of the optical system increases because an additional light guide and equipment are required. To solve this problem, two wedge prisms were applied to the flexible endoscope optical system to adjust the image distance for each object distance. First, two wedge prisms were symmetrically placed on the designed endoscopic optical system. An image distance satisfying the target imaging performance according to each objective distance was derived. Next, the wedge prism decenter value for controlling the image distance was derived. By combining these two data, a wedge prism decenter value that satisfied the target imaging performance at each object distance was applied in multi configurations. As a result of the optimal design applied with the wedge prism, a target imaging performance of more than 20% of the modulation transfer function for a resolution of 178 cycles/mm was satisfied in the entire depth of field of 100 mm-7 mm.
