We present a method for deriving most optimal filter system by which the accuracy of derived physical quantities can be maximized. Using Kurucz(1978)'s model atmospheres, an optimal four filter system for F and G dwarfs is suggested, for which mean wavelengths are located at $3400{\AA}$, $3850{\AA}$, $4190{\AA}$, and $4600{\AA}$ with half-bandwidth of $200{\AA}$. It is found that 35, 38 and 42 filters of the DDO system and the $Str{\ddot{o}}mgren$ u and $\nu$ filters are close to those of the most optimal system.
Like Hipparcos, Gaia is designed to give absolute parallaxes, independent of any astrophysical reference system. And indeed, Gaia's internal zero-point error for parallaxes is likely to be smaller than any individual parallax error. Nevertheless, due in part to mechanical issues of unknown origin, there are many astrophysical questions for which the parallax zero-point error ${\sigma}({\pi}_0)$ will be the fundamentally limiting constraint. These include the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Center. We show that by using the photometric parallax estimates for RR Lyrae stars (RRL) within 8kpc, via the ultra-precise infrared period-luminosity relation, one can independently determine a hyper-precise value for ${\pi}_0$. Despite their paucity relative to bright quasars, we show that RRL are competitive due to their order-of-magnitude improved parallax precision for each individual object relative to bright quasars. We show that this method is mathematically robust and well-approximated by analytic formulae over a wide range of relevant distances.
Constraining physical (or stellar population) properties - such as stellar mass, star-formation rate, stellar population age, and dust-extinction - of galaxies from observation is crucial in the study of galaxy evolution. This is very challenging especially for high-redshift galaxies, and a widely-used method to estimate physical properties of high-redshift galaxies is to compare their photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to spectral templates from stellar population synthesis models. I will show that the SED-fitting results of high-redshift galaxies are strongly dependent on the assumed forms of star-formation histories. I will also present the results of SED-fitting analysis of observed Lyman-break galaxies which show that parametric models with gradually increasing star-formation histories provide better estimates of physical parameters of high-redshift (z>3) star-forming galaxies than traditionally-used exponentially declining star-formation histories. This result is also consistent with the predictions from the modern galaxy formation models.
Adenosine deaminase (ADA) has been utilized as the label in devising a potentiometric homogeneous assay for riboflavin and riboflavin binding protein (RBP). The proposed homogeneous assay method employs an ADA-biotin conjugate as the signal generator and an avidin-riboflavin conjugate as the signal modulator in the solution phase. The catalytic activity of the ADA-biotin conjugate is inhibited in the presence of an excess amount of the avidin-riboflavin conjugate, and the observed inhibition is reversed in an amount proportional to the concentration of RBP added. When the analyte riboflavin is added to this mixture of ADA-biotin, avidin-riboflavin and RBP, the activity of the enzyme conjugate is re-inhibited in an amount proportional to the concentration of riboflavin. Since the enzyme label used in this system is ADA, an ammonia-producing enzyme, a potentiometric rather than photometric detection scheme is used to monitor the enzymatic activity in the assay.
Star formation activity of galaxies, along with color and morphology, show significant environmental dependence in local universe, where galaxies in dense environment tend to be more quiescent and redder. However, many studies show that such environmental dependence does not continue at higher redshifts beyond z~1. The question of how the environmental dependence of galactic properties have developed over time is crucial to understanding cosmic galactic evolution. By combining data from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey(CFHTLS), Infrared Medium-Deep Survey(IMS), and other surveys, the photometric redshifts of galaxies in CFHTLS W2 field were estimated by fitting spectral energy distribution. The distribution of galaxies was mapped in redshift bins of 0.05 interval from 0.6 to 1.4. For each redshift bin, the number density was mapped. The galaxies in high density regions were grouped into clusters using friend-of-friend method. The color of galaxies were analyzed to study the correlation with redshift as well as environmental difference between field galaxies and cluster member galaxies.
Large survey observations such as the EROS, the MACHO and the OGLE projects have discovered a large number of eclipsing binaries in the extra galaxies and published their light curves. The light curves of the eclipsing binaries provide fundamental stellar parameters so that accumulation of the light curves will be very useful for the research of the stellar astronomy. However it requires a lot of time to analyze the light curves. Therefore we developed new method to analyze the large number of light curves in the relatively short time period and found the photometric solution by analyzing the light curves of 20 eclipsing binaries, whose mass ratio can be determined by photometic method, in the Small Magellan Cloud.
A gas chromatographic method for analyzing the gas odorants concentration in natural gas was studied. Eight odorants involving TBM and THT were completely separated by using OV-10 column. The optimization of several interrelated key parameters affecting the response of FPD such as hydrogen flow rate, air flow rate and detector temperature were accomplished. A permeation device was used to obtain calibration curves of TBM and THT. This analytical method has applied to measure TBM and THT used as a natural gas odorant blend in natural gas pipeline. In order to elucidate the relationship between odor level and odorant level feasibility test of fragrance meter was demonstrated.
We present a photometric study of star clusters in the nuclear starburst region of NGC 253 using gVI, YJ, and H band images in the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We find about one thousand star clusters in about 200"x200" field by visual inspection with I<21. We also find about ten thousand star clusters in the same field by automated classification method with magnitude range of 21< I $$\leq_-$$ 24. Ages and masses of star clusters are estimated using spectral energy distribution fitting method. Age distribution of star cluster shows two distinguished young populations with peak ages at 3.5 Myr and 18 Myr. Old populations (>100 Myr) are exist, but their number is small. About thirty young massive star clusters (<10 Myr, ) are found in nuclear region of NGC 253 which are regarded as a result of the recent starburst. Mass function of young star clusters in NGC 253 is somewhat different with those of star clusters in other galaxies. This result suggests that initial cluster mass functions (ICMFs) for star clusters are not universial. Especially ICMF in starburst galaxies may be distinguishable compared with those in normal spiral galaxies. We discuss the implications of these results.

In this study, storage stability of reduced sulfur compounds ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, $CS_2$, and DMDS) and $SO_2$ in sampling bags was investigated in terms of two contrasting storage approaches between forward (F) and reverse (R) direction. The samples for the F method were prepared at the same time and analyzed sequentially through time. In contrast, those of reverse (R) method were prepared sequentially in advance and analyzed all at once upon the preparation of the last sample. In addition, relative performance between two different bag materials (PVF and PEA) was also assessed by using 100 ppb standard. The response factors (RF) of gaseous RSC samples were determined by gas chromatography/pulsed flame photometric detector (GC/PFPD) combined with air server (AS)/thermal desorber (TD) system at storage intervals of 0, 1, and 3 days. There is no statistical difference in all RSCs between two storage methods. However, the results of relative recovery indicated 2.58~12.8% differences in compound type between the two storage methods. Moreover, loss rates and storage stability of $H_2S$ and $SO_2$ were considerably affected by bag materials than any other variables. Therefore, some considerations about storage methods (or bag material types) for sulfur compounds are needed if stored by sampling bag method.
On live performance such as play and musical, various stage effects are utilized to attract a diverse audience. These stage effects include traditional direction techniques, striking display effects and all kinds of ways of being immersed in the scene. In this paper, we propose a novel digital visual effects(digilog) for controlling the surface texture of objects based on spatial augmented reality. For this purpose, we present a method of neutralizing the appearance of an arbitrary object using a projector-camera system. To make the object appear as if it is a transparent object by projecting a carefully determined compensation image onto the surface of objects, we use the homography method for a simple and effective off-line projector-camera calibration. The successful uses of the basic algorithm of Smart Projector for measuring radiometric parameters led us believe that this method may be used for temporal variation of plays and musicals.
