Wastewaters of textile industry cause high volume colour and harmful substance pollutions. Photocatalytic degradation is a method which gives opportunity of reduction of organic pollutants such as dye containing wastewaters. In this study, photocatalytic degradation of C.I. Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) as a model dye contaminant was carried out using Degussa P25 in a photocatalytic reactor. The experiments were followed out at three different azo dye concentrations in a reactor equipped UV-A lamp (365 nm) as a light source. Azo dye removal efficiencies were examined with total organic carbon and UV-vis measurements. As a result of experiments, maximum degradation efficiency was obtained as 100% at BY28 concentration of $50mgL^{-1}$ for the reaction time of 2.5 h. The photodegradation of BY28 was described by a pseudo-first-order kinetic model modified with the langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The adsorption equilibrium constant and the rate constant of the surface reaction were calculated as $K_{dye}=6.689{\cdot}10^{-2}L\;mg^{-1}$ and $k_c=0.599mg\;L^{-1}min^{-1}$, respectively.
Transparent $TiO_2$ films in various thicknesses were prepared by sol-gel and MOCVD method, respectively, and their photocatalytic activities in decomposing gaseous 2-propanol were evaluated. The surfaces and grain structures of the prepared films were characterized by FESEM, XRD, and AFM. It was found that the photocatalytic activities of $TiO_2$ films were greatly dependent on the film thickness and surface roughness: The photocatalytic activity increases with the increase of film thickness, while it decreases with the increase of surface roughness. We have proposed that these phenomena originate from the transfer of photogenerated electron and hole pairs from the bulk to the surface of $TiO_2$ film. Several experimental evidences supporting this mechanism have also been provided.

Limited information is available on the degradation of volatile hydrocarbons determined via the use of plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors. This has led to the evaluation of surface areas of cylindrical continuous-flow photocatalytic reactors for the degradation of three selected aromatic hydrocarbons. Three types of reactors were prepared: a double cylinder-type, a single cylindrical-type without plates and a single cylindrical-type with inserted glass tubes. According to diffuse reflectance, FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, the surface characteristics of a coated photocatalyst were very similar to those of raw $TiO_2$, thereby suggesting that the coated photocatalyst exhibited the same photocatalytic activity as the raw $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies were significantly or slightly higher for the single cylinder-type reactor than for the double cylinder-type reactor which had a greater catalytic surface area. However, for all target compounds, the degradation efficiencies increased gradually when the number of plates was increased. Accordingly, it was suggested that the surface area being enhanced for the plate-inserted reactor would elevate the photocatalytic degradation efficiency effectively. In addition, this study confirmed that both initial concentrations of target compounds and flow rates were important parameters for the photocatalytic removal mechanism of these plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors.
N-doped $TiO_2$ microcuboids were successfully prepared by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the N-doped $TiO_2$ microcuboids enhanced absorption in the visible light region, and exhibited higher activity for photocatalytic degradation of model dyes. Based on the experimental results, a visible light induced photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for N-doped anatase $TiO_2$ microcuboids.
Manganese and $TiO_2$ grown on Activated Carbon Fiber (ACF) was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The prepared composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The catalytic behavior was investigated through the decomposition of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) as standard dyes under visible light. The degradation performance of the degraded standard dye solutions was determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. This enhanced photocatalytic activity arises from the positive synergetic effect among the Mn, $TiO_2$ and ACF in this heterogeneous photocatalyst. The process contributes to the release of abundant photocatalytic sites of Mn and $TiO_2$ and improves the photocatalytic efficiency. The excellent adsorption and photocatalytic effect with the explanation of the synergetic mechanism are very useful not only for fundamental research but also for potential practical applications.

This paper presents applicability of photocatalytic decomposition of methyl mercaptan using $TiO_2$. A quartz reactor was used in order to elucidate reaction pathway in photocatalytic decomposition of methyl mercaptan. Experimental results showed that more than 99.9% of methyl mercaptan was decomposed within 30 minutes. It was found that the photocatalytic decomposition of methyl mercaptan followed pseudo first order and its reaction coefficient was $0.05min^{-1}$ During 30 minutes in the photocatalytic reaction, the concentration of methyl mercaptan, dimethyl disulfide, $SO_2$, $H_2SO_4$, COS, $H_2S$ were determined. These results showed that 64% of methyl mercaptan were compensated for the increase in sulfur after 30 minutes through the mineralization. The proposed main photocatalytic decomposition pathway of methyl mercaptan was methyl $mercaptan{\rightarrow}dimethyl$$disulfide{\rightarrow}SO_2{\rightarrow}H_2SO_4$.
This paper presents a study on the photocatalytic reaction about the composite particles of $TiO_2$-coated phosphors under visible light irradiation. Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide layers were directly coated on the alkaline earth aluminate phosphor, $CaAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},\;Nd^{3+}$ particles by an sol-gel processing method. The photocatalytic reaction was analyzed with the degradation of methylene blue (MB) aqueous solution under UV and visible light irradiations. $TiO_2$-coated phosphor powders showed different photocatalytic mechanism, compared with pure $TiO_2$ (P-25, Degussa). Under UV-irradiation, $TiO_2$-coated phosphor powders showed slow photocatalytic reactivity in the early stage and fast in the latter, compared with that of pure $TiO_2$. However, $TiO_2$-coated phosphor powders showed much faster photocatalytic reactivity than that of pure $TiO_2$ under visible irradiation. In addition, the characterizations of the $TiO_2$-coated phosphor powders were conducted by a X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
Hollow or bumpy ZnO structures with micrometer-size features have been investigated as photocatalysts for water purification due to their high surface area available for reaction with harmful organic molecules and relatively large size for easy separation after finishing the photocatalytic reaction. In this study, selective synthesis of ZnO hollow or crumpled microspheres was performed using a simple and versatile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with various zinc precursors. The morphologies, phases, specific surface areas, and optical properties of the microspheres were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the mechanism underlying the formation of different morphologies and their photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated.

The formation mechanism and photocatalytic properties of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/$TiO_2$-based nanotube (TNTs) composite are investigated. The CNT/TNT composite is synthesized via a solution chemical route. It is confirmed that this 1-D nanotube composite has a core-shell nanotubular structure, where the TNT surrounds the CNT core. The photocatalytic activity investigated based on the methylene blue degradation test is superior to that of with pure TNT. The CNTs play two important roles in enhancing the photocatalytic activity. One is to act as a template to form the core-shell structure while titanate nanosheets are converted into nanotubes. The other is to act as an electron reservoir that facilitates charge separation and electron transfer from the TNT, thus decreasing the electron-hole recombination efficiency.

The $Ag/TiO_{2-x}N_x$ nanoparticles were synthesized by photochemical deposition in a $TiO_{2-X}N_X$ suspension system. The prepared products were characterized by means of XRD, Uv-vis and photoluminescence spectra (PL). Its photocatalytic activity was investigated by the decomposition of methylene blue (MB) solution under illumination of visible and ultraviolet light, respectively. Compared to $TiO_{2-x}N_x$, the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared $Ag/TiO_{2-x}N_x$ is obviously enhanced due to the decreasing recombination of a photoexcitated electron-hole pairs. The Mechanism in which photocatalytic activity is enhanced has been discussed in detail.
