  • The photocatalytic activity of phenol degradation was investigated with the variation of operating parameters in $UV/TiO_2$ honeycomb reactor. In the comparison of phenol degradation rates among various $TiO_2$, Ishihara (STS-02)-coated honeycomb exhibited a slightly higher photocatalytic activity than Degussa P25-coated honeycomb. On the other hand, honeycomb coated by alcohol-mixed $TiO_2$ (N Co.) did not exhibit any photocatalytic activity on phenol degradation. With the increase of Degussa P25 coating amounts, the honeycomb reactor exhibited the gradual increase of phenol degradation rates. The degradation rate of phenol over $UV/TiO_2$ (Degussa P25) honeycomb reactor was asymptotically increased up to 500 mL/min, subsequently followed by a slight decrease as the recirculation rate (100~700 mL/min) was increased. UV absorption at 269 nm was high due to partial degradation of phenol at initial reaction time because the honeycomb surface was pre-adsorbed by phenol prior to UV irradiation.

  • Photocatalytic properties of $TiO_2$ nanopowders has been received much attention due to their high potentials for environmental applications such as remediation of polluted environments. The $TiO_2$ nanopowders doped with metal or non-metal elements have been synthesized by variety methods such as flame method, chemical vapor synthesis, sol-gel, ion implantation, which affect a doping behavior in different ways resulting in different surface characteristics, leading to different photocatalytic activity. In addition to an effect of synthesis methods, the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ nanopowders can be improved by subsequent heat-treatments. In this study, to obtain a highly efficient photocatalyst, we synthesized $TiO_2$ nanopowders doped with tungsten by the chemical vapor synthesis method (CVS) and determined their physical properties and photocatalytic activity, together with subsequent post-treatment in the range of $300^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • TiO$_2$-WO$_3$(8.2wt%) coatings were prepared by the APS (Atmospheric Plasma Spraying) process to clarify the relationship between the process parameters(H$_2$ gas flow rate of plasma 2nd gas and spraying distance) of the APS coating and photo-decomposition efficiency kinetics of the MB(methylene blue) aqueous solution decomposition and to understand the effect of addition of WO$_3$ on photocatalytic properties of TiO$_2$ sprayed coating. Further, the temperature and velocity of flying particles were measured by DPV-2000 to investigate the relationship between microstructure of coatings and process parameters. Properties of coatins were investigated by XRD, SEM, XPS, RAMAN, UV/VIS spectrometer. In case of the TiO$_2$-WO$_3$(8.2wt%) coating, it had a lower anatase fraction than that of pure-TiO$_2$ coatings because of flying in the higher temperature plasma plume by the heavy weight of TiO$_2$, WO$_3$. And, when WO$_3$ added powders were spayed, the doping effects of W ions substituted into the Ti ion sites was not occured during melting and solidification cycles of spraying. It was found that the addition of WO$_3$ was ineffective effective on increasing photo-decomposition efficiency of TiO$_2$ sprayed coating.

  • In this study, CNT/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared using surface modified Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and titanium n-butoxide (TNB) with benzene. The composites were characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), FT-IR spectra, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The UV radiation induced photoactivity of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites was tested using a fixed concentration of methylene blue (MB, $C_{16}H_{18}N_3S{\cdot}Cl{\cdot}3H_2O$) in an aqueous solution. Finally, it can be considered that the MB removal effect of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites is not only due to the adsorption effect of MWCNT and photocatalytic degradation of $TiO_2$, but also to electron transfer between MWCNT and $TiO_2$.

  • In this work, combustion-synthesized $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were used for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue with UV light irradiation. Also the results were compared with those of commercial $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (Degussa, P-25). Particle characteristics of the two were analyzed thru the SEM, TEM, and XRD. In spite of the lower specific surface area than that of P-25, the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles formed in this study showed the relatively good ability to degrade the concentration of the organics.

  • Nanoporous structured tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) is characterized and its application in the photocatalytic destruction of endocrine, Bisphenol A, is examined. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals irregularly shaped nanopores of size 2.0-4.5 nm. This corresponds to the result of an average nanopore distribution of 4.5 nm, as determined by Barret-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) plot from the isotherm curve. The photoluminescence (PL) curve, corresponding to the recombination between electron and hole, largely decreases in the $TiO_2$/nanoporous $SnO_2$ composite. Finally, a synergy effect between $TiO_2$ and porous $SnO_2$ is exhibited in photocatalysis: the photocatalytic destruction of Bisphenol A is improved by combining the nanoporous structured $SnO_2$ with $TiO_2$, and 75% decomposition of 10.0 ppm of Bisphenol A is achieved after 24 h.

  • The photocatalytic decolorization of Rhodamine B (RhB) was studied using packed-bed reactor and immobilized $TiO_2/UV$ System. The 20 W UV-A, UV-B and UV-C lamps were employed as the light source. The effect of shape and surface polishing extent of reflector, distance between the reactor and reflector, reactor material were investigated. The results showed that the order of the initial reaction constant with reflector shape was round > polygon > W > rhombus. The optimum distance between the reactor and reflector was 2 cm. The initial reaction constant of quartz reactor was 1.46 times higher than that of tile PVDF reactor.

  • We fabricates the $TiO_2$ thin film from anatase phase $TiO_2$ powder having good photocatalytic property using aerosol deposition method at room temperature. Aerosol deposition method, which sprays an aerosol powder with ultrasonic velocity and deposits a thin film on substrate at low temperature, has the advantages of low thermal stress and low cost. To fabricate the $TiO_2$ thin film, the aerosol bath pressure and chamber pressure were 500 torr and 0.4 torr, respectively. The difference of aerosol bath pressure and chamber pressure accelerated the $TiO_2$ nano powder to ultrasonic velocity through the nozzle of $0.4 mm{\times}10 mm$ and $TiO_2$ thin film was finally formed. SS mesh with diameter of 50 mm was used as a substrate to apply the $TiO_2$ thin film to water quality purification. The raw powder was dehydrated for the good dispersion of $TiO_2$ powder. To suppress the formation of second particle, the powder was dispersed for 90 min in alcohol bath by ultrasonic treatment and desiccated. The grain size of $1 {\mu}m$ was observed in $TiO_2$ thin film deposited on SUS mesh by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The anatase phase of $TiO_2$ thin film was also observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the anatase phase of raw powder was nicely maintained after aerosol deposition. The results are applicable to water treatment filter having photocatalytic reaction.

  • Feasibility study of using $Ti0_2$ mist generated by ultrasonic atomization for photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene was attempted in this study. For this, the photocatalytic reactor consisting of mist generator and photo-reactor was designed. Most of experimental results showed that steady state reached about 30 minutes after the start of experiments. The effects of $Ti0_2$ concentration, toluene concentration, and UV wavelength on toluene removal ratio were investigated. It was found that the highest removal efficiency was obtained when $Ti0_2$ concentration was 0.6 g/L in slurry. At this condition, it was found that the toluene removal efficiency increased as toluene concentration in feed decreased. In order to investigate the effect of UV wavelength, experiments were carried out using three UV lamps with different UV wavelength. The results showed that the highest removal efficiency was achieved when the lamp with the shortest wavelength were employed.
