The Effects of a Phonological Awareness Instruction with Phonetics on the Oral and Aural English Proficiency

  • This study explores the effects of phonological awareness instruction with phonetics on listening comprehension and speaking. For the test of measuring the improvement of listening comprehension, two nationwide listening comprehension tests were used for pre-test and post-test. To find out the improvement of speaking ability, students were required to take the Level-3 NEAT speaking tests. There was a notable correlation between phonological awareness instruction with phonetics and listening ability. Also a significant correlation between phonological awareness instruction with phonetics and speaking ability was found. The group with phonological awareness class with phonetics received higher scores in listening and speaking test than the group without phonological awareness class with phonetics in the post-test. This study implies that phonological awareness class with phonetics is helpful for the improvement of listening and speaking ability. With this research, we can also say that students' communicative competence increased.

Considering Dynamic Non-Segmental Phonetics

  • This presentation aims to explore some possibility of non-segmental phonetics usually ignored in phonetics education. In pedagogical phonetics, especially ESL/EFL oriented phonetics speech sounds tend to be classified in two criteria 1) 'pronunciation' which deals with segments and 2) 'prosody' or 'suprasegmentals', a criterion that deals with non-segmental elements such as stress and intonation. However, speech involves more dynamic processing. It is non-linear and multi-dimensional in spite of the linear sequence of symbols in phonetic/phonological transcriptions. No word is without pitch or voice quality apart from segmental characteristics whether it is spoken in isolation or cut out from continuous speech. This simply tells the dichotomy of pronunciation and prosody is merely a useful convention. There exists some room to consider dynamic non-segmental phonetics. Examples of non-segmental phonetic investigation, some of the analyses conducted within the frame of Firthian Prosodic Analysis, especially of the relation between vowel variants and foot types, are examined and we see what kind of auditory phonetic training is required to understand impressionistic transcriptions which lie behind the non-segmental phonetics.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review the contribution made by some phoneticians including Si-gyung Chu, Du-bong Kim, Hyun-bae Choi, and Geuk-ro Lee in the early 20th century. It is known that the period can be characterized as the coexistence of traditional phonetics and modem phonetics. Si-gyung Chu well recognized the physical nature of speech sounds from the physiological point of view. Although Du-bong Kim adapted Chu's approach in some ways, he made some more detailed modifications in explaining the vocal organs. Hyun-bae Choi tried to explain the consonants and vowels systematically based on Western theories of phonetics. Finally, Geuk-ro Lee made the most significant contribution by introducing the experimental phonetics.

Mieko Han의 한국어 음성학 연구 (Mieko Han and her Works on Korean Phonetics)

  • This paper deals with a general review of Mieko S. Han, who made a significant contribution to the studies of Korean phonetics during the 1960' s and early 1970' s. As both a single and joint author, Dr. Han published important papers in both quantity and quality, which have been cited among Korean phoneticians until today. Before Dr. M. Han' s work, professor of USC in the department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, there were only a few phonetics-related publications in Korea, most of which are papers or books based on non-experimental traditional approach. It is known that there was coexistence between traditionalism and structuralism in the field of Korean linguistics. It was, however, fortunate that we had two important phoneticians (M. Han and Chin-W Kim) abroad at that time. Mieko Han' s concern was to investigate experimental characteristics of the system of Korean vowels and consonants using a Spectrograph, which was the single most important tool for analysing phonetic data at that time. Dr. Han conducted her experimental studies on Korean phonetics, mostly funded by the Office of Naval Research, in terms of duration, fundamental frequency, Voice Onset Time (VOT), intensity, and so on. This paper aims to re-appreciate Dr. Han's specific contribution to the study of Korean phonetics since she played an important role as a pioneer of early Korean phonetics. Further, it is highly recommended that Dr. Han's works can be extremely useful for a graduate student, who seriously would like to specialize in Korean phonetics in the first step.

Chasing ideas in phonetics

  • Starting as a poet, I learned about the sounds of words with David Abercrombie. Then, remembering my background in physics, I moved to studying acoustic phonetics and speech synthesis. From there I learned about psychology and how. to test perceptual theories. A meeting with a physiologist led to work on the use of the respiratory muscles in speech. Later I landed in Africa teaching English phonetics and learning about African languages. When I went to UCLA to set up a lab I was able to find bright students who helped make computer models of the vocal tract and taught me linguistic theory. And I was able to continue wandering around the world, describing the sounds of a wide range of languages.

  • The purpose of this paper is to slove problems with English pronunciation education and to correct the misbelief that misbelief that English pronunciation can be thught effectiverly by native speakers or good speakers. Best sellers have many mistakes even in the description of sounds and most English education departments in national universities teach English phonetics theoretically only for 1 semester, More than 10 years' investigation into native speakers' and good speakers' teaching methods in various ways confirmed that they couldn't know English phonetics teachers should have a theoretical and practical knowledge of phonetics of English and students' dialects and the abilities to find the same or similar English sounds their students can make in normal or abnormal situations, to make both correct sounds and incorrect ones their students can make and to make them perceive the differences by using various ways.

  • Korean intonation has been investigated mainly from the point of view of impressionistic phonetics and phonology. The purpose of this paper is to investigate Korean intonation especially nuclear tones, from the point of view of experimental phonetics. Since what we hear is not always the always as what we see in fundamental frequency contours, acoustic characteristics of Korean nuclear times are first discussed Based m quantitative data similar nuclear times are compared and the relationship between the nuclear ton and sentence type is investigated The relationship between the nuclear tone and the speaker's attitude is also discussed.
