  • We present a statistical analysis of Korean phonological variations using automatic generation of phonetic transcription. We have constructed the automatic generation system of Korean pronunciation variants by applying rules modeling obligatory and optional phonemic changes and allophonic changes. These rules are derived from knowledge-based morphophonological analysis and government standard pronunciation rules. This system is optimized for continuous speech recognition by generating phonetic transcriptions for training and constructing a pronunciation dictionary for recognition. In this paper, we describe Korean phonological variations by analyzing the statistics of phonemic change rule applications for the 60,000 sentences in the Samsung PBS(Phonetic Balanced Sentence) Speech DB. Our results show that the most frequently happening obligatory phonemic variations are in the order of liaison, tensification, aspirationalization, and nasalization of obstruent, and that the most frequently happening optional phonemic variations are in the order of initial consonant h-deletion, insertion of final consonant with the same place of articulation as the next consonants, and deletion of final consonant with the same place of articulation as the next consonants. These statistics can be used for improving the performance of speech recognition systems.

  • Those who are interested in the German diphthongs wil1 find that they are classified into three kinds of forms in accordance with their gliding directions: closing, centring and rising. The German [aI], for example, which derives its origin from [i:] of the riddle high German. Is regarded as a distinctive feature that distinguishes the new high German from the middle high German. The diphthong [aI] is cal led fall ing one, because the sonority of the sound undergoes a diminution as the articulation proceeds. The end part of the diphthong [aI] is less sonorous than the beginning part. In most of the German diphthongs the diminution of prominence is caused by the fact that the end part is inherently less sonorous than the beginning. This applies to the other c los Ing and centring diphthongs. This way of diminution of sonority exerts influence on methods of constructing systems of phonetic notation. The above mentioned less sonorous end part of diphthong [I] shows that it differs from some analogous sound in another context. It is useful to demonstrate the occurrence of particular allophones by introducing special symbols to denote them (here: at→ae). Forms of transcription embodying extra symbol s are cal led narrow. But since strict adherence to the principle 'one sound one symbol' would involve the introduction of a large number of symbols, this would render phonetic transcriptions cumbrous and difficult to read. A broad style of transcription provides 'one symbol for each phoneme' of the language that is transcribed. Phonemic transcriptions are simple and unambiguous to everyone who knows the principles governing the use of allophones in the language transcribed. Among those German ways of transcriptions of diphthongs ( a?, a?, ??: ae, ao, ?ø; ae, ao, ?ø) the phonemic (broad) transcription is general Iy to be recommended, for Instance, in teaching the pronunciation of a foreign language, since it combines accuracy with the greatest measure of simplicity (Some passages and terms from Daniel Jones) .

  • This paper is intended as a preliminary study on phonetic and phonological differences between Polish and Korean languages. In this paper an attempt is made to examine the most conspicious difficulties encountered by Polish learners who begin to speak Korean (and in doing so, 1 would hope that it might be of help to future learners of both languages). Since the phoneme inventory and general phonetic rules for both languages are very different, teaching and learning accurate pronunciation is extremely difficult for both the Poles and Koreans without any previous phonetic training. In the case of Polish and Korean we can see how strong and persistent the influences of the mother-tongue are on the target language. As an example I would like to discuss the basic differences between Polish and Korean consonants. The most important consonantal opposition in Polish is voice-/voicelessness (f. ex.; 〔b〕 / 〔p〕, 〔g〕 / 〔k〕) while in Korean, opposition such as voice-/voicelessness is of secondary importance. Therefore Korean speakers do not perceive the difference between Polish voiced and voiceless consonants. On the other hand, Polish speakers can not distinguish Korean lenis / fortis / aspirated consonants (f. ex.; ㅂ 〔b〕 / ㅃ 〔p〕 / ㅍ〔ph〕, ㄱ 〔g〕 / ㄲ 〔k〕 / ㅋ 〔kh〕)) opposition. The other very important factor is palatalization which is of vital importance in Polish and, because of this, Polish speakers are extremely sensitive to it. In Korean palatalization is not important phonetically and Korean speakers do not distinguish between palatalized and non-palatalized consonants. The transcription used here is based on ' The principles of the International Phonetic Association and the Korean Phonetic Alphabet ' (1981) by Hyun Bok Lee.

  • The purpose of this study is 1) to investigate the phoneme inventories and phonological processes of cochlear implant(CI) children and 2) to describe their utterances using narrow phonetic transcription method. All ten subjects had more than 2 year-experience with CI and showed more than 85 % open-set sentence perception abilities. Average consonant accuracy was 81.36 % and it was improved up to 87.41% when distortion errors were not counted. They showed similar phonological processing patterns to HA or normal hearing children in some way as well as different phonological processing patterns from HA or normal hearing children. The prominent distortion error pattern was weakening of consonants. Every subject had his/her idiosyncratic error pattern that demanded his/her own individualized therapy program.

  • The phonetic study of English language in Japan is a matter of great importance, a problem of major concern and a. vital subject The special difficulties which the Japanese college students have in learning English lie in the field of prosodic features of English, such as, syllable, rhythm, stress, intonation, prominence, of.. These difficulties have made Japanese students' pronunciation relatively monotonous or mora(ness). In my presentation, the specific phonetic features of Japanese language first will be discussed and clarified. And then the effective teaching method of intonation to improve Japanese students' pronunciation will be suggested. Finally, the oral dialogue with intonation analysis and transcription in the class room will be demonstrated to highlight the presentation.

  • An annotation model of a non-native speech database has been devised, wherein English is the target language and Korean is the native language. The proposed annotation model features overt transcription of predictable linguistic information in native speech by the dictionary entry and several predefined types of error specification found in native language transfer. The proposed model is, in that sense, different from other previously explored annotation models in the literature, most of which are based on native speech. The validity of the newly proposed model is revealed in its consistent annotation of 1) salient linguistic features of English, 2) contrastive linguistic features of English and Korean, 3) actual errors reported in the literature, and 4) the newly collected data in this study. The annotation method in this model adopts the widely accepted conventions, Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet (SAMPA) and the TOnes and Break Indices (ToBI). In the proposed annotation model, SAMPA is exclusively employed for segmental transcription and ToBI for prosodic transcription. The annotation of non-native speech is used to assess speaking ability for English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners.

  • The writer discusses the necessity of clear distinction between transliteration and transcription. Romanization problems in Korea have been entangled for decades by confusing and mixing those two. For the transliteration of Hanngul a new system with the utmost simplicity and perfect convertibility is suggested here. For the transcription of Korean sounds another system is suggested which can transcribe even the chroneme as well as all the phonemes. So it surpasses the current Hanngul orthography. Korean sentences containing many pairs of homographic heteronyms are romanized in the two ways side by side for the contrasting of the two systems.

  • A punctuation generation system which combines prosodic information with acoustic and language model information is presented. Experiments have been conducted first for the reference text transcriptions. In these experiments, prosodic information was shown to be more useful than language model information. When these information sources are combined, an F-measure of up to 0.7830 was obtained for adding punctuation to a reference transcription. This method of punctuation generation can also be applied to the 1-best output of a speech recogniser. The 1-best output is first time aligned. Based on the time alignment information, prosodic features are generated. As in the approach applied in the punctuation generation for reference transcriptions, the best sequence of punctuation marks for this 1-best output is found using the prosodic feature model and an language model trained on texts which contain punctuation marks.
