  • This paper describes a multimodal dialog system that uses Hidden Information State (HIS) method to manage the human-machine dialog. HIS dialog manager is a variation of classic partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), which provides one of the stochastic dialog modeling frameworks. Because dialog modeling using conventional POMDP requires very large size of state space, it has been hard to apply POMDP to the real domain of dialog system. In HIS dialog manager, system groups the belief states to reduce the size of state space, so that HIS dialog manager can be used in real world domain of dialog system. We adapted this HIS method to Smart-home domain multimodal dialog system.

  • In this paper we proposed a modified reliability function for improving bimodal speaker identification(BSI) performance. The convectional reliability function, used by N. Fox[1], is extended by introducing an optimization factor. We evaluated the proposed method in BSI domain. A BSI system was implemented based on GMM and it was tested using VidTIMIT database. Through speaker identification experiments we verified the usefulness of our proposed method. The experiments showed the improved performance, i.e., the reduction of error rate by 39%.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the priming effect in Korean and English word production by Korean speakers. Picture-naming with distractors was used as experimental task. The type of target language, the type of distractor language and SOA(Stimulus Onset Asynchrony) were used as variables. Cross-linguistic priming effect and within-linguistic priming effect were mesured to investigate bilinguals' conceptual system.

  • A case-study in classroom acoustics was conducted and the effects of two types(system air conditioner and packaged air conditioner) of air conditioner were investigated. Acoustical measurements were made in two different classrooms. Each classroom has different acoustics showing sound quality of air conditioner. Mental concentration test was conducted to evaluate the effects of air conditioner noise with different sound presure level(dBA). Speech intelligibility test was also planed with adopting Korean phonetic balanced words.

  • In this paper, I have shown how to associate a musical beat with a note within the framework of Optimality Theory. And the following hierarchy of constraints is suggested to associate a sub-beat with a note. Alternation Sub-beat CCC Head $\gg$ Beat-to-Note $\gg$ Note-to-Beat EQ-Beats Smaller Note Furthermore, I have tried to explain Sprung Rhythm with a musical beat system. I have suggested the following hierarchy for Sprung Rhythm. Head $\gg$ SCSR Using a sub-beat on the basis of Head $\gg$ SCSR shows the abrupt change of Sprung Rhythm well.

  • An automatic pronunciation correction system provides learners with correction guidelines for each mispronunciation. For this purpose we develope a speech recognizer which automatically classifies pronunciation errors when Koreans speak a foreign language. In order to develope the methods for automatic assessment of pronunciation quality, we propose a language model based score as a machine score in the speech recognizer. Experimental results show that the language model based score had higher correlation with human scores than that obtained using the conventional log-likelihood based score.

  • An automatic pronunciation correction system provides learners with correction guidelines for each mispronunciation. In this paper we propose an HMM based speech recognizer which automatically classifies pronunciation errors when Koreans speak Japanese. We also propose two pronunciation networks for automatic detection of mispronunciation. In this paper, we evaluated performances of the networks by computing the correlation between the human ratings and the machine scores obtained from the speech recognizer.

  • This paper proposes an automatic pronunciation correction system which provides users with correction guidelines for each pronunciation error. For this purpose, we develop an HMM speech recognizer which automatically classifies pronunciation errors when Korean speaks foreign language. And, we collect speech database of native and nonnative speakers using phonetically balanced word lists. We perform analysis of mispronunciation types from the experiment of automatic mispronunciation detection using speech recognizer.

  • The goal of our research is to build a text independent speaker recognition system that can be used in any condition without any additional adaptation process. The performance of speaker recognition systems can be severally degraded in some unknown mismatched microphone and noise conditions. In this paper, we show that PCA(Principal component analysis) without dimension reduction can greatly increase the performance to a level close to matched condition. The error rate is reduced more by the proposed augmented PCA, which augment an axis to the feature vectors of the most confusable pairs of speakers before PCA
