  • The present study examines the phonetic realizations of the unstressed weak vowel /e/ in English words produced by native and Korean ESL speakers. Traditionally, the stressed elements in utterance are considered to be prominent. In this sense, the unstressed weak vowel /e/ is predicted to be shorter in length, lower in pitch and intensity than the stressed vowels. The experiment shows that native English speakers correlate the unstressed weak vowel /e/ with both shorter duration and lower pitch; Korean ESL speakers correlate it with lower pitch only. We cannot find any significant statistical difference in intensity between /e/ and the stressed vowels in both cases. This study suggests it is important to acquire and produce the correct prosodic correlates of the unstressed weak vowel /e/ for Korean ESL speakers to command more natural English intonation, since /e/ is the most common vowel in English speech and consists of the English foot rhythm along with stressed vowels.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the diadochokinetic characters in the patients with spastic cerebral palsy(CP) in severity. The diadochokinetic characters were measured through rate, regularity, accuracy and consistency. The subjects participated in this study included 27 persons with spastic CP(mild- 9, moderate- 9, severe- 9) and 9 normal persons who is around 11-20 years old. On the result of this study, rate in AMR was significant difference between all spastic groups and normal group, and rate in SMR was significant difference between normal and mild groups and moderate and severe groups. In regularity of diadochokinetic task, severe group had significant difference the other groups. Finally, accuracy and consistency of diadochokinetic task exhibited significant difference between all spastic groups and normal group.

  • This study was designed to examination effects of concurrent linguistic or cognitive tasks on speech rate. Eight normal speakers were repeated sentences either with or without simultaneous a linguistic task and a cognitive task. Linguistic task was conducted by generating verbs from nouns and cognitive task meaned performing mental arithmetic. Speech rate was measured from acoustic data. One-way ANOVA conducted to know speech rate difference among 3 different type of tasks. The results showed there was no significant difference between sentence repeat and linguistic tasks. But There was significant difference findings: sentence repeat and linguistic task, linguistic and cognitive task.

  • This study tests the hypothesis that the voiced-voiceless distinction is influenced by the relationship between acoustics and perception. Production and perception tests are conducted with temporal cues in different environments(CV, VCV, VC). The result showed that acoustic cues indicating significant difference between voiceless/voiced plosives do not behave just as do in perception. The result also showed that there existed an asymmetry between acoustics and perception.

  • This study compared pitch range, speech rate, pause, intonation type and boundary tones of four sentences produced by five transgenders (male to female) to those of twenty normal adults. Voice analysis was done by Praat (version 4.049). Results indicated that there was a difference in pitch range, speech rate, pause, intonation type and boundary tones among the 3 groups(transgenders, normal males and normal females). Especially, transgenders indicated boundary tones more frequently than normal adults.

  • This study was investigated the effect of speech tasks on habitual pitch. Seven male and female young adult speakers participated in this study. The experiment consisted of seven different speech tasks: counting, reading, sustained phonation /a/, prolonged /i:/, answering /ne/. Data was analyzed via Visi-pitch IV. The results showed that there was no significant F0 difference among speech tasks.

  • The final purpose of this paper is to prove that, under noisy environment, there is significant difference of perceptibility of the place of articulation between fortis plosives and aspirated plosives in Korean. For this research, a perceptual experiment had been made. Two groups of subjects heard stimuli with noise and were required to answer which sound they had heard. The result is that, with noise, aspirated plosives cannot be heard clearly whereas fortis plosives can be heard well.

  • This paper is for the comparison of prosodic phrasing in Korean spontaneous speech and read speech. For this comparison, The subjects read the transcriptions from their own spontaneous speech. The number of IP in spontaneous speech is more than in read speech, while The number of AP has no difference between them. A accentual phrase in spontaneous speech has less syllable than read speech.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the difference of cortical activation in naming the picture in Korean and English. Experimental design was 2(Korean, English) language condition x 4(no distractor, semantic related distractor, semantic unrelated distrator, corresponding distractor) distractor condition. language condition was between subject factor and distractor condition was within subject factor. The result was that Korean naming condition showed less cortical activation than English naming condition. The activation region was reported in each condition.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the phonetic realizations of English unstressed vowels produced by advanced Korean learners (KLs) of English compared with English native speakers (NSs) focusing on the comparative study of English words and English loanwords. The result shows that KLs are usually not native-like in producing the English unstressed vowel /ə/ and loanword orthography affects the way the KLs produce /?/. The vowel quality of the unstressed vowels produced by the KLs is different from that of the NSs. In duration and pitch, KLs show significantly less difference between the stressed and unstressed vowels than do the NSs. The KLs usually have a high pitch in the stressed and the last syllable while the NSs usually produce peak F0 in the stressed syllable. When the KLs have a similar vowel quality with that of the NSs, they produce a shorter duration of the unstressed vowels. However, there is no correlation between the realization of the pitch and the vowel quality in KLs speech.
