Mathematics Education as a Humanities Form of Education-A Brief Introduction to the History of the Philosophy of Mathematics Education

  • Mathematics holds a key position among many subjects of school education. Besides having an instrumental value, mathematics for the general public has been underestimated. Thus, in this paper we examine how western educational theorists have emphasized the value of mathematics as humanities form of education. First of all, we discuss Platonism as a philosophical basis of the ancient Greek mathematics education. Next, we examine the thoughts of Froebel, who provided the theoretical basis for the public education since 19th century, and discuss the value of mathematics teaching in their humanistic educational thoughts. Also, we examine the humanistic value of mathematics education in Dewey\\`s educational philosophy, which criticized the traditional western ethics and epistemology, and established instrumentalism. In this paper, we recognize the humanistic values of mathematics education through the historical examination of the philosophies of mathematics education.

  • A new methodology for representing the interaction between machines and the interlock signals required in FMCs has been developed. Object-Oriented Philosophies (OOPs) lend themselves to the development of such a scheme. A methodology developed here regards the tasks to be performed by the cell or any of its constituent machines for being primal. Sensory signals indicating the changes of state pf machines are used to trigger or initiate tasks. A task may be simple and require a relatively short time to execute, or may be complex and lengthy. This methodology may be depicated by a set of diagrams called Task Initiation Diagram (TID) and their accompanying rules.

  • This study attempts to show the reasons why the academic field, which has been called 'Library and Information Science', should change its paradigm for both research and practice. To this end, this study investigates the essence of the current academic crisis, which is seriously threatening the survival of the LIS as an independent academic field in South Korea. In details, this study discusses the identity problem of the LIS, the poverty in scholarship, the low self-esteem of the profession, etc. Also investigated are the reasons why the profession, which includes both scholars and practitioners, is facing with such a crisis. This study emphasizes that both researchers and practitioners in the LIS field should keep their eyes on the ongojng information revolution, and that in order to thrive as well as to survive from the midst of such an academic crisis they should notice and understand the essence of the revolution. The conclusion of this study includes the philosophies and strategies for survival, which the profession should keep in mind and follow in a hurry.

  • A safety-related equipment for use in Nuclear Power Plant should be needed an Equipment Qualification. This paper presents the approach, methods, philosophies, and procedures for qualifying the large squirrel-cage induction electric pump motors for use in ULCHIN 5&6 Nuclear Power Plants. In this paper, the method of qualification is a combination of type test and analysis method, which is composed of Radiation exposure test, Seismic simulation test, Thermal aging analysis for non-metallic materials and Seismic analysis. It is found that the motor performs its safety function with no failure mechanism under postulated service conditions.

  • The paper introduces major technical specifications of the Line II railway simulators of Pusan City in Korea. Comparing design specifics of the railway simulators with of the light aircraft Flight Training Device(FTD, the paper reveals commonality of implementation technologies applied to both simulators: Overall configurations and design philosophies are basically the same. In both programs VMEbus computing systems with UNIX are adapted as backbones of the simulators. It is found that the railway simulators are less stringent in real-time requirements than the aircraft FTD, and the railway simulators are designed to be more event-driven and object-oriented. The experiences show that models may be diverse depending on the objects but implementation technologies are about the same. Maximizing portability of implementation technologies is a matter of an organizations strategy of adopting standardized processes and modular technologies available and most economic to them.

  • Recently, developing U-City as an integrated set of ubiquitous spaces has been regarded as a promising field in realizing ubiquitous computing technology. However, well-organized requirement analyses of U-City to declare what kinds of ubiquitous space services are needed and which ubiquitous computing technology should be incorporated to come up with the needs are still insufficient. Hence, the aims of this Paper are to Propose a set of unique U-City construction philosophies and to analyze which services Should be offered in the ubiquitous Space services in U-Cities. A field survey to the citizens who are potential end users of the ubiquitous space services was conducted to analyze the success factors of U-City using CSF methodology. Focused group interview with professionals in the field of ubiquitous computing technology in Korea was then performed to identify the relationship of the ubiquitous space services and the critical success factors.

  • 본 논문은 니체가 반자연주의적 철학들을 비판하면서, 어떻게 자연의 개념 및 인간의 본질에 관한 개념을 재구성하고, 이들을 자연주의적 윤리의 관점에서 재평가하고자 했는가를 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 자연주의적 윤리에 근거하여, 자연을 자연화하며. 인간을 자연으로 되돌려 놓고자 하는 그의 과제에 초점을 두고 있다. 본 논문은 또한 정의의 개념을 형이상학적 영역에서 자연주의적 영역으로 전환시키고자 했던 그의 시도를 재해석하면서. 환경정의 이론의 개발을 위한 주요한 통찰력을 얻고자 하는 한편, 그의 자연주의적 정의관에 내재된 한계들을 지적하고자 한다.

Nonparametric Bayesian methods: a gentle introduction and overview

  • Nonparametric Bayesian methods have seen rapid and sustained growth over the past 25 years. We present a gentle introduction to the methods, motivating the methods through the twin perspectives of consistency and false consistency. We then step through the various constructions of the Dirichlet process, outline a number of the basic properties of this process and move on to the mixture of Dirichlet processes model, including a quick discussion of the computational methods used to fit the model. We touch on the main philosophies for nonparametric Bayesian data analysis and then reanalyze a famous data set. The reanalysis illustrates the concept of admissibility through a novel perturbation of the problem and data, showing the benefit of shrinkage estimation and the much greater benefit of nonparametric Bayesian modelling. We conclude with a too-brief survey of fancier nonparametric Bayesian methods.
