  • This study simplifies the phenomenological theory of viscosity previously proposed by the present authors. This simplified theory has only two thermodynamic properties and one parameter, as opposed to its predecessor, which has many, allowing for easy calculation of the liquid viscosities. The viscosity of liquid metals, an excellent test for checking the validity of the liquid theory, can be calculated using the equation based on the simplified theory. The calculated results by the current theory turn out to be good for the liquid metals, including sodium, potassium, rubbidium, cesium, lead and mercury.

  • This study is a phenomenological study conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the positive psychological capital experience of the elderly women who participated in the long-term movement. In Korea, women are eight years older on average than men, and two-thirds of the elderly in need are women, so research on the issue of women and senior citizens is urgent. The research participants include seven female senior citizens from the Seoul-based sports center. The data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews once for 90 to 180 minutes and twice per participant from March to May 2020, and was analyzed using the phenomenological research method of Colaizzi. The analysis results showed that regular life, relationship and interest life, changing life, and satisfying life were factors that acquired and developed positive psychological capital for elderly women, which were possible only if they maintained their health, regularity and relationship. The experience of participants who achieved successful aging by acquiring positive psychological capital through exercise is suggested as a solution to aging social problems, and furthermore, it is expected to serve as a healthy guide for successful aging for young and old people ahead of their old age.

  • In this study, phenomenological methodology was used to understand the experience of family management style in mothers who have children with atopic dermatitis. For study methods, in-depth interview was conducted on 9 mothers residing in Seoul and the approach from phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi was used. As a result, 69 significant statements were deduced as well as 21 themes, 10 theme clusters, and 4 categories. These main categories include experiences of accepting atopic dermatitis as a reality, family management style for overcoming atopic dermatitis, reality of facing chronic fatigue, and hope and expectation for the child's health. Our study show that the intervention for improving family management style regarding atopic dermatitis is required including the enhancement of the mothers' quality of life and the recovery of family relationship.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experiences of accidents in patient safety. Methods: Data were collected from October 8, 2011 to January 31, 2012 through in-depth interviews with seven nurses who had worked on wards or in the ICU in a university hospital. Data were analyzed by applying Colaizzi's phenomenological methodology. Results: The following six categories were extracted: Fear of the patient's condition caused by the accident, Conflict in the accident report, Blame on others and circumstances, Feeling guilty and sorry as the patient's condition is improving, Being disappointed with the unfavorable atmosphere in dealing with the accident, After the accident, being sensitive in performing nursing duties and being faithful to the principles. Conclusion: The results indicate that the organizational culture in the hospital related to accidents in patient safety is still closed and punitive, and such an atmosphere causes nurses to feel seriously hurt, but through this experience nurses are likely to mature as nursing professionals. Programs on prevention of accidents in patient safety and a system to guard against these accidents should be established. Also the organizational safety culture should be improved.

  • This study explored the experiences of couples therapists' marital relationship during the couples therapist training using phenomenological research method. The research questions involved the marital relationship experiences and their meanings, and how their marital relationship experiences affect the development of couples therapists during couples therapist training. Five couples therapists identified their personal, relational, and professional growth experiences by half-structured in-depth interview. Giorgi analysis guidelines were used, and five major themes and 20 subthemes were derived. The essence of their marital relationship experiences was "to establish a marital relationship as partners for growth and healing, and provide resources to become a wounded healer." Five major themes included the motivation to become a couples therapist, the experiencing of personal growth, the experiencing of differentiated connection, the experiencing of professional growth, and resources for the development of couples therapist. Exploration of the meanings of marital relationship experiences during couples therapist training shows the reciprocal relationship among personal, relational, and professional growth experiences. The integration of these experiences leads to holistic development of couples therapists. Implications for practice and future research are also discussed.

The participants were 20 patients who live in one city. The patients were asked to describe their exercise experiences. With permission of the subjects, the interviews were recorded and transcribed. Colaizzi's method was used for the phenomenological analysis. The investigator analysed the data to identify and categorize themes and basic structural elements. The process of the exercise experiences in patients with low back pain has three proposed phases pre-exercise phase, exercise phase, post-exercise phase. 150 formulating meanings, 54 themes, 20 theme clusters were identified. The interview data were organized by theme clusters into 9 categories : 'difficulties with activities of Daily Living', 'Psychological Distress', 'Support', 'Effectiveness after Exercise', 'Confidence of Healing', 'Importance of Exercise', 'Exorcise Self-Efficacy', 'Control', and 'Barrier'. Since the importance of exercise and exercise self-efficacy were identified as significant factors in this study, it may be important to plan nursing interventions to assist clients to realize the exercise self-efficacy and importance of exercise. Also, continuous support from health professionals, family, and experienced persons are needed. Further strategies for reducing barriers should be devised.

  • This study aimed to understand the meaning and essence inherent in the life experiences of people with schizophrenia. We approached with phenomenological method, and the research participants were 10 adults, aged 20 or older, who were diagnosed with schizophrenia. As a result, we found four essential themes. The participants with schizophrenia lived a life with special constraints of being thrown to the reality in which they experienced continuing suffering. Nevertheless, their daily lives were maintained on the basis of their own feelings and needs. In this study, we confirmed that they should be understood and treated in the mental health field with the perspective that they are not 'patients' nor a pathological outcome, but a 'human' with schizophrenia.

  • This qualitative nursing research used a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to discover meaning in mid - aged women's experience of mastectomy. The ultimate aim of the inquiry was to discover the essence of mid-aged women's experience and promote understanding. The study was guided by Van Manen's method for doing research. The method of inquiry included. turning to phenomenon of interest ; inquiring and investigating experience as it was lived rather than as conceptualized ; reflecting and analyzing essential themes which characterize phenomenon : and describing phenomenon through art of writing and rewriting. Multiple strategies for data collecting were needed : in depth face-to-face interview ; analysis of women's writings ; artistic works : and analysis of examples of phenomenon in art, litera lure, and drama. Although the experience was different for all of the women interviewd, essential themes of experience emerged : Self-discovering of vicious disease, Divining punishment-unfortunate women, loss of self though the scar, a night-mare, change of life values and attitudes, rediscovering living alone, living through with fearing of death. Findings from artistic and creative inquiry further validated findings and meaning descovered. The study illuminated meaning and simultaneously validated the phenomenological research process. Essential themes for understanding women's experience, implications for education, research, and practice, direction and need for continuing inquiry were identified.
