  • Conventional SMB process is operated using 4-zone having several chromatography columns in each zone. Unlike batch chromatography, SMB process can continuously separate binary materials. Both high productivity and purity are obtainable by using SMB process. In this study, the simulation on Thermal Simulated Moving Bed Concentrator (TSMBC) which is a SMB process with thermal swing adsorption was carried out. The advantage of TSMBC is that adsorption isotherm can be easily controlled by thermal wave or direct heating. Recovery of pure water and concentration of phenol was studied in simulation. To verify environmental-friendly potential of TSMBC, DOWEX $1{\times}4$ was chosen as an adsorbent and phenol was selected as a target material. When 3 columns were used in this study, concentration of phenol is 2.29, 2.28 and 1.31 times higher than injected sample. However, a contamination of phenol in solvent port was found, probably due to the restriction of adsorption isotherm of phenol on DOWEX $1{\times}4$.

  • For the detection of contaminated liquid spawn, we selected suitable medium, indicator and developed method of diagnosis. The growth of pathogenic bacteria, Pseudomonas sp., and fungi, Trichoderma sp., in YPL media was better than in PDA and NA. In addition, the changes of color and absorbance of media were obviously showed when contaminated liquid spawn by pathogenic bacteria and fungi was incubated on YPL including phenol red for 48 hour at $25^{\circ}C$. The color of YPLP after incubating of infected liquid spawn by Pseudomonas sp. and Trichoderma sp. were changed from orange to red and to scarlet, respectively. Whereas, the color of YPLP after incubation of only Pleurotus ostreatus indicated yellow at liquid spawn. Therefore, it is possible to easily distinguish contaminated liquid spawn by color of change in YPLP.

  • Accurate analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil is an important prerequisite for proper source tracking of contamination. Identification of petroleum compounds is commonly carried out by peak pattern matching in gas chromatography. However, this method has several technical limitations, especially when the soils underwent biological, physical and chemical transformation. For instance, it is very difficult to distinguish jet fuel (JP-8) from kerosene because JP-8 is derivatized from secondary reaction between chemical agents (e.g. anti-oxidants, antifreezer and so on) and kerosene. In this study, an alternative method to separately analyze JP-8 and kerosene in the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil was proposed. Qualitative analyses were performed for representative phenolic antioxidants [2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol (2,6-DTBP), 2,4-di-tert- butylphenol(2,4-DTBP), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl phenol (2,6-DTBMP)] using a two dimensional gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (2D GC×GC-TOF-MS). This qualitative analysis of antioxidants in soil would be a useful complementary tool for the peak pattern matching method to identify JP-8 contamination in soil.

  • The risk of cross-contamination in dental clinic is very high. Those who are engaged in dental clinic are exposed to various microorganisms in saliva and blood of patient. Potential possibility of cross-contamination of patient to patient, patient to dentist, dentist to laboratory technician always exist, which is important in the view of public health. It is well known that microorganisms may cause cross-contamination by suck-back of microorganisms into the water supply line or air supply line of dental unit and sprayed back into the next patient's oral cavity. The majority of microorganisms coming from dental unit are water microorganisms from the main water supply which have colonized the tube within the units and multiplied in the relatively warm and stagnant conditions. The purpose of this study is to measure the extent of microbial contamination of dental unit and ultrasonic scaler, to evaluate that dental unit water supply is suitable for drinking water, and to assess the effect of flushing on reduction of microbial contamination of dental unit and ultrasonic scaler. In the first experiment, water samples(50ml) from 20 dental units and 10 ultrasonic scalers in Seoul National Univ. Hosp. were tested for the presence of coliform. The samples were filtered by membrane filtration technique.(Microfil system, Millipore Co. U. S. A.) The filter was then placed onto MacConkey agar plate and the plates with filter on it were incubated aerobically at $37^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. The colors and shapes of colonies were examined if those were coliform. To verify the presence of coliform, the colonies were inoculated into phenol red lactose broth and incubated aerobically at $37^{\circ}C$ for 2 days. The fomation of gas was observed. In the second experiment, water samples from 20 handpieces, 10 ultrasonic scalers and 30 A/W syringes after 0, 2, 4, 6 min. flushing respectively were taken. $200{\mu}l$ water samples were spreaded on Brain Heart Infusion agar plate and the plates were incubated aerobically at $37^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. The number of colony was counted. The results obtained were summarized as follows 1. The water from dental unit and ultrasonic scaler was not suitable for drinking water. 2. No coliform was founded in dental unit and ultrasonic scaler water supply. 3. The number of colony of dental unit and ultrasonic scaler was highest in the group of o min. flushing(p<0.05). 4. There was no statistically significant difference in the extent of microbial contamination among handpiece, ultrasonic scaler and A/W syringe (p>0.05). 5. The number of colony was lowest in the group of 4 min. flushing, but there was no statistically significant difference among 2, 4, 6 min. flushing groups.(p>0.05) 6. It is recommended to flush dental unit water line for 4 min. after use on each patient.

  • In today's civilization, it can be impossible to prevent disasters that cause large-scale human and material harm, and the environmental industry is not excepted from this. Over the last 50 years, several large and small environmental health catastrophes have occurred in Korea. Notable instances include the phenol pollution accident in the Nakdong River, the Hebei Spirit oil spill in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do, and the humidifier disinfectant disaster. Looking at these instances, it is clear that the government failed to prevent similar incidents and accidents after the tragedies. The government created and executed different policies to prevent such incidents and accidents, but the majority of them were highly fragmented. It is understandable that depending on the political and social level of the society in which the environmental health hazard incident/accident happened, the investigation of the cause, countermeasures, and policy reaction may differ. To put it another way, the more authoritarian and non-democratic a political social system is, the more likely it is to cover up occurrences and accidents without a deep examination. This is in line with the members of society's level of political awareness and acknowledgment of the importance of life and safety. In 1985, when the Onsan pollution disease was discovered, and in 2011, when we recognized the realities of the humidifier disinfectant disaster, South Korea's political and social systems were entirely different.

  • Environmental risk is one of major risks in contemporary society which is often conceptualized in terms of 'risk society'. The crisis which retains such environmental risk can be characterized by 'technical hazards', rather than natural hazards in traditional societies, because of potentiality of technical control over its generation and managing process. Environmental crisis tends to be recurred due to certain limitations of response of both government and civil society. Moreover, it can be argued that generation of environmental crisis and limitations of its managing process are inherent in problematic structures in contemporary society, especially in its 4 basic elements and their characters; that is, capitalist market economy which promotes increasing profits and decreasing cost; bureaucratic representative politics which has brought about concentration of power and evasion of responsibility, instrumental science and technology which leads to blind belief on scientific knowledge and its uncertainty; and finally individualistic way of life with exclusive and passive response to crisis. This paper aims to consider the generation and managing process of environmental crisis in terms of these 4 basic elements, with comparative studies on empirical cases of the water crisis by Phenol pollution in Taegu in 1991 and the water crisis by parasites contamination in Sydney in 1998.

  • The underground water quality of petroleum products storage cavern is influenced by that of dumping and landfill sites adjacent to cavern. From the chemical analysis of underground water sampled from landfill site, insignificant amounts of As, Cu and Pb were detected in a half of test samples while Cd, Hg, $Cr^{6+}$, $CN^-$, TCE, PCE and Phenol were not detected in all samples. All measurements of $COD^{Mn}$ were below $8.0mg/{\ell}$ that can be negligible for the contamination by organic matters. The total bacteria counted from 1st and 2nd microbiological analysis were $94.84{\times}10^4cells/m{\ell}$ and $146.26{\times}10^{-4}cells/m{\ell}$, respectively, and all counts of the sulfate reducing bacteria were less than $2cells/m{\ell}$. It can be suggested that the water quality adjacent to storage cavern can also be studied to improve the reliability of hydrogeologic stability of storage cavern.

  • The leaching behavior of $^{14}C-carbofuran$, $^{14}C-bentazon$, and $^{14}C-3,3,4,4'-tetrachloroazobenzene(TCAB)$ in the forms of freshly treated, 3-month-aged, and 6-month-aged residues, respectively, was investigated in a loamy soil column system. The degradation and mobility of pesticides in soil and the possibility of the contamination of groundwater were followed by this approach: The ambient temperature of $15{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, irrigation by the constant-head method on soil columns, and leaching with 1332 ml of simulated precipitation during 90 days. While the fresh residues of $^{14}C-carbofuran$ and $^{14}C-bentazon$ were very mobile, the aged ones were remarkably reduced in their mobility. Fresh and aged residues of $^{14}C-TCAB$ were very immobile, instead. 3-Keto carbofuran phenol(2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-3-oxo-7-benzofuranol) was the major degradation product present in the leachate from the soil column containing freshly treated $^{14}C-carbofuran$, while no metabolites could be detected in the leachates from the columns containing $^{14}C-bentazon$ or $^{14}C-TCAB$.

  • The purposes of this research are to examine soil pollution in the nation and to explore the contaminated soil management of the public housing agency in public land for residential development. In so doing, the primary and secondary data were utilized, the former made use of the public data annually released by the Korea Ministry of Environment, and the latter relied on a self-administerd questionnaire survey conducted in the staff of the public housing agency, particularly those in charge of soil contamination in large-scale land, housing and urban development projects. The findings reveal that the national concentrations of 21 inorganic and organic soil contaminants (e.g., Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, F, P, PCB, CN, Phenol, BTEX, TPH, TCE, PCE, Benzo(a)pyrene, and pH) in the land were extracted to be well below the risk level designated by the statutory guidance while industrial areas had them at a relatively modest level. In addition, the survey results indicate that the public housing agency didn't establish specific and clear guidelines for soil pollution and its remediation in the residential land development, so that contaminated sites have been primarily remediated by outsourcing companies. As the unexpected occurrence of contaminated sites causes the incurring expenses added to total project budget, the provision of both professional training and on-site manuals with the sufficient information on techniques and methods of soil contamination is critical to promptly and systematically deal with soil pollution.
