  • Recently, Phthalocyanine dye has attentions due to their excellent photochemical properties and used to optical applications such as chemical sensors. And azo groups can change photochemical properties in the UV irradiation because their molecualr structure reverse cis-trans isomer and changes cooperative motion, aggregation and so on. In this study, we synthesized the azo compound between amino pyridine and phenol. this azo derivative used the combination with 3-nitro phthalonitrile and makes phthalocyanine structure through the synthesis with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene(DBU), zinc acetate. Finally, we synthesized a new photoswiching dye zinc-phthalocyanine azo compound. This compound was studied by phothoswichiing phenomenon by UV irradiation and analyzed molecular aggregation through the SEM images.

  • We have summarised some important aspects of our recent basic and applied studies in the area of photocatalytic detoxifcation with Degussa P25 titanium dioxide($TiO_2$) being the photocatalyst. Heterogeneousphotocatalytic decompositions of two components such as TCE-chloroform, TCE-phenol and TCE-benzene as well as single component organic, TCE, chloroform and $CCl_4$ were carried out to investigate the effect of additional compound on the TCE decomposition rate. In laboratory experiments, the optimum flow rate of TCE solution was $200cm^3/min$ with annular photoreactor in the presence of 0.1 wt% $TiO_2$ powder under illumination. It was observed that the second compound such as $CHCl_3$, phenol and benzene has a negative effect on the TCE decomposition rate. Result presented that TCE decomposition ratio was increased at low pH in the TCE-phenol two component solution. It could be shown that the photocatalytic reactor exhibits technical feasibility of detoxifying the multicomponent under proper experimental conditions.

  • Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl[Ethyl (R)-2-{4-(6-chloro-1,3-benzoxazol-2-yloxy)phenoxy}propionate] is well known as a herbicide for its specific activity against the weed grasses. This compound was synthesized by the reaction of 4-(6-chloro-1,3-benzoxazol-2-yloxy)phenol and ethyl (S)-O-(p-toluenesulfonyl)lactate in good yields with high optical pure(optical purity: 99.9% up). In this process Walden inversion occurs, whereby the S-configuration of the propionic acid derivative is converted to the R-configuration of the final product. 4-(6-Chloro-l,3-benzoxazol-2-yloxy)phenol was obtained by 5 step reactions in over-all 70% yields using inexpensive raw materials.

  • The phenolic compounds contained in milled barley grains were seperated and identified by gas liquid chromatography and the effects of phenolic compounds extracted from milled barley grains and each authentic phenolic compound on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied. Severn phenolic acids, namely cinnamic, protocatechuic, ferulic, sinapid, vanillic, syringic, gallic acids, were identified in milled barley grains by gas liquid chromatography. The contents of sinapic, ferulic, cinnamic, protocatechuic acids were larger than those of vanillic and gallic acids. Phenolic compounds, extracted from milled barley grains and supplemented in culture broth, were inhibitory to the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at levels above 100ppm to 24 hours but not inhibitory at all levels after 48 hours. Cinnamic, ferulic, vanillic acids at all levels were inhibitory to the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, among them cinnamic acid was most inhibitory. Syringic acid was inhibitory to the growth of the yeast at the initial stage of culture. But sinapic and protocatechuic acids were slightly stimulatory to the growth of the yeast and gallic acid was ineffective to the growth of the yeast.

  • The need of volatile organic compound (VOC) free coating material has been increased to solve environmental problems such as the global warming. Nowadays, about 70~80% of coating materials used in the worldwide are a liquid type. Therefore, the development of non-solvent coating material that can minimize VOCs emissions is necessary to solve the global warming problem. In this study, acrylic monomers were added to develop non-solvent paints in order to improve disadvantages of the poor adhesion of a conventional phenolic resin caused by acidification. As a result, the blend resins of 2.818 Mpa phenol- formaldehyde resin/poly methyl methacrylate (PE/PMMA) has the best properties and performances for the adhesives.

  • The contents of total phenol and total flavonoid of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) were measured. The antioxidant activity of the artichoke was evaluated based on its potential as a scavenging the ABTS radical. These results showed the antioxidant activity of artichoke has a close relationship with the total flavonoid content. The compound showing antioxidant activity was isolated from the artichoke by repeated column chromatography and recrystallization. Based on the spectrometric studies, the compound was identified as 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid, known as cynarin. The content of cynarin from heads and leafs of the artichoke determined by $C_{18}$ reversed phase HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) coupled with photodiode array detector was 10.15 and 0.67 mg/g, respectively. This compound showed potent antioxidant activities against DPPH and ABTS radicals ($EC_{50}$ = 14.09 and 28.85 ${\mu}M$, respectively).

  • Plant biomass has been proposed to be an alternative source for petroleum-based chemical compounds. Especially, phenolic chemical compounds can be obtained from lignin by chemical depolymerization processes because lignin consists of complex aromatic polymer such as trans-p-coumaryl, coniferyl and sinapyl alcohols, etc. Phenolic chemical compounds from lignin were usually produced in super critical water. However, we applied Near-critical water (NCW) system because NCW is known as a good solvent for lignin depolymerization. Organic matter like lignin can be solved in NCW system and the system has a unique acid-base property without conventional non-eco-friendly chemicals such as sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. In this work, we tried to optimize the NCW depolymerization system by adjusting the processing variables such as reaction time, temperature and pressure. Moreover, the amount of additional phenol was optimized by changing the molar ratio between water and phenol. Phenol was used as capping agent to prevent re-polymerization of active fragment such as formaldehyde. Alkali-lignin was used as a starting material and characterized by a Solid State 13C-NMR, FT-IR and EA (Elemental Analysis). GC-MS analysis confirmed that o-cresol, p-cresol, anisole and 4-hydroxyphathalic acid were the main product and they were quantitatively analyzed by HPLC.

  • The interaction between ionic surfactants and different nonionic molecules and polymers are studied using ion surfactant selective electrode. From the experimental data, critical concentrations of the interaction and binding process are evaluated. The interaction between hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) in three molecular weights (1000, 10000 and 100000) and also schiff-bases, 2-[2-carboxyphenyl nitrilomethylidyne]-phenol (ortho CNP), 2-[3-carboxyphenyl nitrilomethylidyne]-phenol (meta CNP)and 2-[4-carboxyphenyl nitrilomethylidyne]-phenol (para CNP) with the potentiometric method were investigated using HTAB membrane selective electrode. In the case of PEG with increasing molecular weights more interaction to HTAB occurs. The electromotive force (EMF) data also showed that interaction between para CNP with HTAB is more than the other schiff-bases. It seems this case related to less space interference of COOH group for that compound. The onset of binding ($T_1$) of course is the same for three schiffbase molecules.

  • To find out the temporal and spatial variations in contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral, the sap of Acer mono MAX. were harvested from several regions and periods, and those contents were determined by solvent fractionation, TLC, HPLC and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Most of all the free sugar contained in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was sucrose, with range of 1.35 to 3.41%. The content of total phenolic compound in the sap of Acer mono MAX. was distributed from 0.034 to 0.151 mg/100m1, and most of phenolic acid was phloroglucinol. The contents of Na, K, Ca and Mg were ranged from 24.11 to 33.15, from 13.75 to 22.10, from 47.19 to 88.00 and from 2.48 to 6.31 ppm, respectively. Contents of sugar, phenolic compounds and mineral decreased sharply at the later harvest. Comparing two different methods of the sap harvest, bore method and groove method, the contents of compounds in the study were determined higher with groove method.
