Development of texture in SiC materials by hot-pressing and subsequent annealing was studied. Crystallographic texture type was characterized by measuring X-ray pole figures on the perpendicular plane to the hot-pressing direction. Observed all pole figures were nearly axially symmetric (fiber texture). In case of ${\beta}$-SiC materials, the pole density of basal plane (0004) increased as annealing time increased, in contrast, other planes (hkil) of ${\beta}$-SiC materials and all planes of ${\alpha}$-SiC materials nearly remained unchanged. In the case of ${\beta}$-SiC materials, therefore, a weak texture of (0001) plane at the normal direction took place in the 8h annealed samples, resulting from grian growth. The fracture toughness values of ${\alpha}$-SiC materials measured in both planes parallel and perpendicular to the hot-pressing direction were very similar. However, the fracture toughness of ${\beta}$-SiC materials measured parallel to the hot-pressing direction were higher than that measured perpendicular to the hot-pressing derection, relatively, because of the texture and the microstructure anisotropy.
We develop a simulation method that affords very high variability of virtual pedagogical situations involving many independent plans, still achieves authoring (or implementation) scalability. While each individual plan would be coherently drawn up by an agent for its respective goal, those independently-made plans might be coincidentally intertwined in their execution. The inevitable non-determinism involved in this multi-event plan encompassing pre-planned and unforeseen events is resolved by (multi-phase) dynamic planning and articulated sequencing of events in contrast to static planning and monolithic authoring in conventional narrative systems. Connections between events are dictated by their associated rules and their actual connections are dynamically determined in execution time by current conditions of background-world. This unified connection scheme across pre-planned and unforeseen events allows a multi-plan, multi-agent situation to be coherently planned and executed in a global scale. To further the variability of a situation, the inter-event coupling is made in a fine level of action along with a limited episteme of each agent involved. We confirm analytically the viability of our approach with respect to the situation variability and authoring scalability, and demonstrate its practicality with an implementation of a composite situation.

Nitrogen vacancy center (NV center) in diamond has recently been appeared as a promising candidate for hyperpolarization applications due to its optical pumping property by laser. Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) has been used as a conventional method to obtain the resonance spectrum of NV centers. ODMR, however, has a shortcoming of sensitivity and a limitation of subjects, such that the degree of hyperpolarization can hardly be estimated, and that the spins other than NV centers are invisible. In contrast, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is known to proportionally reflect the degree of spin polarization. In this work, we successfully observed the optically-induced hyperpolarization of NV spins in diamond through CW-ESR spectroscopy with an X-band system. All the NV peaks were identified by calculating the eigenvalues of NV spin Hamiltonian. The intensities of NV peaks were enhanced over 240 times after optical pumping. The enhanced peaks corresponding to the transition from |ms=0> to |ms=-1> revealed inverted phases, while other peaks remained in-phase. The optically-induced hyperpolarization on NV spins can be a useful polarization source, leading to 13C nuclear hyperpolarization in diamond.

This paper presents a novel channel capacity maximization method for a distorted $2{\times}2$ line-of-sight (LOS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link. A LOS MIMO link may be distorted by the influence of environmental factors such that the channel capacity of the LOS MIMO link may be degraded. By using the proposed method, the channel capacity of a distorted $2{\times}2$ LOS MIMO link can be the same as that of the ideal $2{\times}2$ LOS MIMO link. The proposed method employs an additional receiver antenna to maximize the channel capacity. In contrast to a $3{\times}2$ LOS MIMO link, a receiver circuit for a third receiving antenna is not necessary. Hence, the receiver for the proposed method is much simpler than that for a $3{\times}2$ LOS MIMO link. We determine the optimal position of the additional receiver antenna analytically. Simulation results show that the channel capacity can approach the ideal using the proposed method.

Homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal modes are representatively the -FFS (fringe-field switching) mode using liquid crystal (-LC) with negative dielectric anisotropy, the +FFS mode and the IPS (in-plane switching) mode using +LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. In view of image quality evaluation standard of LCD, we compared characteristics of the brightness, the contrast ratio (CR) and color shift when the modes have respectively optimized phase retardation values $(d{\Delta}n)$. Consequently, in the most sensitively viewing angle of a man's physical vision, both FFS modes have advantage over the IPS mode from the brightness & the CR point of view. We are also confirmed that the +FFS mode out of them shows the smallest color shift according to all viewing directions in grey levels.

Objectives: Acetone/triacetine method for clearing cellulose ester membrane (CEM) filter has been a popular method for air-borne asbestos analysis. However, as a weakness of this method, it is time consuming to analyses asbestos samples after sampling. Crystalclear method can be used to analyses asbestos samples promptly after sampling. Although a strength of crystal clear method exists, there was little valid studied for the method. This study was conducted to compare acetone/triacetine method with crystalclear one for analysing asbestos sample. Methods: Test samples made in three different concentration ranges(low, medium and high concentration) were analysed by phase contrast microscopy after acetone/triacetine and crystalclear method treatment respectively. Results: We did not find statistical difference in analysed results between two methods, which were conducted in three different concentrations ranges. Conclusions: We concluded that crystalclear method can be used as clearing method for air-borne asbestos analysis instead of acetone/triacetine method.
The global environment is deteriorating at an alarming rate despite of enhanced international environmental regulation. Many studies have been performed to reduce pollutants. Recently, phytoremediation, plant-based technology for the removal of toxic contaminants from soil, water, and air, has been receiving large attention. Arsenic-contaminated soil is one of the major pollutant sources fur drinking water. The fern brake (Pteris erotica) has been reported as a hyper-accumulate arsenic from soils. In this study, we investigated the arsenic absorption effect on sap flow inside xylem vessels of a fern brake. The synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique was employed to monitor flow inside the plant non-invasively. The captured phase-contrast X-ray images show both anatomy and transport of water inside the fern brake. The refilling process of water containing arsenic inside the xylem vessels of fern brake's leaves and stems was clearly observed. These results would provide important information needed fur understanding the mechanisms of accumulation, translocation, and transformation of toxic materials in plants.

Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome (FHCS) is characterized by inflammation of the perihepatic capsules associated with the pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). FHCS is not a serious disease, but if not treated properly, it can result in increased medical costs, prolonged treatment, and dissatisfaction with treatment. However, early recognition of FHCS in the emergency department can be difficult because its symptoms or physical findings may mimic many other diseases. Although contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) is the useful imaging modality for recognition of FHCS, it is available only when a high suspicion is established. We performed point-of-care ultrasonography in an 18-year-old woman who had a sharp right upper quadrant (RUQ) abdominal pain without PID symptoms and found a thickened or three-layer hepatic capsule. These findings coincided with areas showing increased hepatic capsular enhancement in the arterial phase of CECT. These results show that if the thickened or three-layer hepatic capsule without evidence of a common cause of RUQ pain is observed on ultrasonography in women of childbearing age with RUQ abdominal pain, the physician can consider the possibility of FHCS.

The preparation and properties of emulsions stabilized by the adsorption of solid particles at the oil-water interface are reviewed. Comparison is made with the behaviour of surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Many of the properties of Pickering emulsions are attributed to the large free energy of adsorption for particles. The main differences is due to the irreversible adsorption of particles to the interface. Phase inversion from w/o (water-in-oil) to o/w (oil-in-water) can be brought by increasing the volume fraction of water. Hydrophilic particles tend to form o/w emulsion whereas hydrophobic particles form w/o emulsion. The contact angle at the oil-water interface is main parameter to decide the emulsion type. The aspects of stability of Pickering emulsions are in contrast to general emulsions in some points. The possibility using Pickering emulsions for cosmetics is also proposed.
In 2021, seven yeast strains were isolated from earthworm (Eisenia andrei) gut samples collected from the Nanji Water Regeneration Center in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. A total of seven yeasts were isolated, of which three strains have not been previously reported in Korea. To identify the yeasts, pairwise sequence comparisons of large subunit (LSU) rDNA sequences were performed using the basic local alignment search tool (BLAST). Assimilation test and cell morphology analysis were performed using the API 20C AUX kit and phase contrast microscope, respectively. Five of the seven strains were assigned to the genus Candida of the order Saccharomycetales of the class Saccharomycetes, and two to the genus Apiotrichum of the order Trichosporonales of the class Tremellomycetes. The yeast strain Candida sojae E2 belongs to the family Debaryomycetaceae, and Apiotrichum laibachii E8 and A. laibachii E9 belong to the family Trichosporonaceae. All strains were cultured in yeast mold agar for three days and showed different colony forms. C. sojae E2 was round and entire shaped, while A. laibachii E8 and A. laibachii E9 was round and convex shaped. This study focuses on the description of the three yeast strains that have not been officially reported in Korea.
