  • In this paper, when a refractive index grating and a gain grating were simultaneously present in a DFB laser having a wavelength of 1.55 ㎛, a dielectric film coating was applied so that reflection did not occur on the right mirror surface, so that 𝜌r=0. In case of 𝛿L>0, the characteristics of the oscillation frequency and oscillation gain were analyzed. When the grating phase of the left mirror surface continues to decrease from 𝜋, the graph lines of each mode gradually shift to the left. In case of 𝜅L=10, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode is the lowest. In this case, the mode selectivity is relatively low. From 𝜅L=0.5 to 𝜅L=6, the mode selectivity and the frequency stability are excellent. In the case of DFB lasers with an anti-reflection coated mirror, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode increases but the mode selectivity is about twice as excellent, compared with DFB lasers of having two cleaved facets.

  • We propose and demonstrate an I/Q demodulator using four-port BPSK demodulator base on additive mixing and reflection-type phase shifter using hybrid technique. Previously, the conventional I/Q demodulator base on multiplicative or additive mixing method divides I/Q signal path from mixer to parallel-to-serial converter. In this paper, we propose new I/Q demodulator without dividing I/Q baseband signal path. The proposed schematic requires half size in implementation and half power consumption in baseband path compared with the conventional receiver. Also, the proposed receiver eliminates parallel-to-serial converter after data decoding. The proposed circuit has been successfully demodulated a QPSK signal with the L-band carrier frequency and 20 Mbps data rate.

  • A new type of photonic bandgap(PBG) structures that consist of arrays of spiral metal patches is proposed in this paper. Reflection phases and radiation of these PBG structures are simulated by high frequency structure simulator(HFSS) to characterize their performance. The simulation results show that the resonant frequency of the proposed PBG structures gets significantly lower than those of the PBG structures with square metal patches, but that the radiation is nearly the same for both of the PBG structures. Analysis on reflection phases reveals that the lowering of the resonant frequency is associated with the increase in capacitance.

  • In this paper, a methodology for determination of the thickness of layer on a substrate using reflection acoustic microscope has been presented. It has been shown that the amplitude and the phase of reflection coefficient of the layer-substrate composite has been used for measurement of layer thickness, acoustic velosity, mass density of the layer material. The reflection acoustic microscope operating at a frequency of 15 MHz has been used for the experiment and the measured acoustic impedance value for aluminum sample has agreed with the published data, and the measured layer thickness for silver-glass composite has agreed with that measured using micrometer.

  • The single sensor based acoustic reflection control system separates the incident and reflected signals from the single sensor output, and reduces the reflected signal by generating an out-of-phase signal from the incident signal component. In this paper, we propose an optimal filter design method for a single sensor based reflection control system. In the proposed method, it is shown that the optimum control filter design is possible by using the measured impulse responses of the reflection and control paths. The reflection control algorithm based on the proposed optimal filter achieves better performance than the conventional adaptive filter-based algorithm and effectively controls the reflection without the initial convergence time. We performed computer simulations using the signals obtained in a 1-dimensional acoustic duct environment, and from the simulation results, it was confirmed that the proposed optimal filter has robust performance even in noisy environment.

  • 5-bit broadband MMIC phase shifter has been designed and fabricated. For the broadband performance, 11.25$^{\circ}$, 22.5$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ bit have been designed with Lange coupler and 180$^{\circ}$ bit has been implemented by using shorted coupled line with Lange coupler and $\pi$-network of transmission line. Due to Lange coupler with large size, the Lange couplers have been folded far circuit size reduction. Low loss PIN diode has been utilized as a switch for each bit. Fabricated 5-bit broadband phase shifter shows the measured results that RMS phase error of 5 major phases is 3.5$^{\circ}$, maximum insertion loss is 12.5 dB, and maximum input and output return loss are 7 dB and 10 dB, respectively. The size of fabricated phase shifter is 6.5$\times$5.3 $ extrm{mm}^2$.

  • This paper presents 12.2 GHz ~ 12.7 GHz frequency band reflection type 5-bit digital phase shifter with constant insertion loss property that was fabricated with relatively low cost's InGaAs HEMT for amplifier. The unavoidable large insertion loss difference between on and off states of HEMT, when it is designed by conventional design theory based on ideal switching device, is removed by transforming the HEMT impedances at on and off states to other proper values connecting a certain length transmission line to HEMT and then applying the conventional design theory. The fabricated 5-bit digital phase shifter shows very good insertion loss properties of less than 1.5 dB insertion loss difference and -4.5 dB ~ -6 dB insertion loss in 35 phase steps at 12.2 GHz ~ 12.7 GHz. These results verify the design method presented in this paper, which is useful to design phase shifter of constant insertion loss with non-ideal switching device.

  • In response to the current situation where general methods cannot effectively compensate for the phase delay of ordinary optical mixers, a multi-layer spatial beam-splitting optical mixer is designed using total reflection triangular prisms and polarization beam splittings. The phase delay is generated by the wave plate, and the mixer can use the existing parallel plates in the structure to individually compensate for the phase of the four output beams. A mixer model is established based on the structure, and the influence of the position and orientation of the optical components on the phase delay is analyzed. The feasibility of the phase compensation method is simulated and analyzed. The results show that the mixer can effectively compensate for the four outputs of the optical mixer over a wide range. The mixer has a compact structure, good performance, and significant advantages in phase error control, production, and tuning, making it suitable for free-space coherent optical communication systems.

  • Lateral p-i-n photodiodes have been fabricated, electrically tested, and incorporated into microwave control circuits such as an optically excited microwave atttenuator and reflection type phase shifter. Circuit design procedures for the loaded-line phase shifter with the optically controlled p-i-n photodiode are presented. The equal loss loading mode presented for the first time for the phase shifter circuits with lossy load allows an equal insertion loss of the phase shifter in both of its phase states. It is found that the insertion loss of the equal loss loading mode phase shifter constructed with the fabricated p-i-n photodiode load are about 3dB for 11.25$^{\circ}$ bit and 1dB for 5.625$^{\circ}$ bit for the frequency range of 2GHz to 11GHz.

  • An active balun using current steering for phase correction is presented. The proposed active balun is constructed with two different unit balun structures based on current steering to reduce phase and amplitude errors. This type of topology can be compared with the conventional phase and amplitude correction techniques which do not incorporate the current steering. Designed and fabricated active balun in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process operates over 0.95 - 1.45 GHz band, showing input reflection coefficient under -15 dB, phase error of $11^{\circ}$ and gain error of 0.5 dB. Gain is measured to be 0.3 dB maximum and power consumption of 7.2 mW is measured.
