  • The degradation of 2,3-dichlorophenol(2,3-diCP) by various advanced oxidation systems with continuous feeding of hydrogen peroxide including the ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide, the Fenton and the photo-Fenton process has been conducted. The highest removal efficiency for 2,3-diCP in the aqueous phase was obtained by the photo-Fenton process among the advanced oxidation systems. In the photo-Fenton process, The removal efficiency of 2,3-diCP decreased with increasing pH in the range of 3 to 6, and it decreased with increasing initial concentration. As the intermediates of 2,3-diCP by photo-fenton reaction, 3,4-chlorocatechol and 2,3-dichlorohydroquinone were detected, thus the degradation pathways were proposed.

  • We investigated the effect of energy levels on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fatty acid composition of Holstein steers at different slaughter ages. Forty Holstein steers with an average body weight (BW) of 234.21 ± 7.42 kg and 7.78 ± 0.22 months were randomly allocated to two experimental groups; a 22-month-old experimental group and a 24-month-old experimental group. Total digestible nutrients (TDN) for each group were set to 70% (T1) and 72% (T2) during fattening phase and 74% (T3) and 76% (T4) for the finishing phase, respectively. No difference was observed in the final BW between the experimental groups during the fattening phase. However, in the finishing phase, the final BW of T4 (820.31 kg) group was significantly higher than that of T1 (745.57 kg; p < 0.05). The average daily gain (ADG) of T2 group in the finishing phase and overall period were 1.27 kg and 1.26 kg, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of T1 (1.11 kg and 1.12 kg; p < 0.05). The feed conversion ratio (FCR) and TDN conversion ratio of T2 group in the finishing phase also decreased by 10.23% and 7.73%, respectively, compared to those of T1. The cold carcass weight of T4 group was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of T1, whereas back fat thickness, longissimus area, and marbling score were not significantly different among groups. No differences were observed in physicochemical characteristics of the carcass including moisture, crude protein, and crude fat content among groups. However, the composition of fatty acids differed significantly between the groups. The content of C18:0 was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in T4 than in T1 group, and the content of C18:2 was higher in T4 than in T1 and T3 (p < 0.05). Therefore, feeding Holstein steers at a high-energy feeding level during the fattening and finishing phases improves ADG and reduces the slaughter age from 24 months to 22 months.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the effect of soluble protein supplements on concentration of soluble non-ammonia nitrogen (SNAN) in the liquid phase of ruminal (RD) and omasal digesta (OD) of Korean native steers, and to investigate diurnal pattern in SNAN concentration in RD and OD. Three ruminally cannulated Korean native steers in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square design consumed a basal diet of rice straw and corn-based concentrate (control), and that supplemented (kg/d DM basis) with intact casein (0.24; IC) or acid hydrolyzed casein (0.46; AHC). Ruminal digesta was sampled using a vacuum pump, whereas OD was collected using an omasal sampling system at 2.0 h intervals after a morning feeding. The SNAN fractions (free amino acid (AA), peptide and soluble protein) in RD and OD were assessed using the ninhydrin assay. Concentrations of free AA and total SNAN in RD were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in OD. Although free AA concentration was relatively high, mean peptide was quantitatively the most important fraction of total SNAN in both RD and OD, indicating that degradation of peptide to AA rather than hydrolysis of soluble protein to peptide or deamination may be the most limiting step in rumen proteolysis of Korean native steers. Diurnal variation in peptide concentration in OD for the soluble protein supplemented diets during the feeding cycle peaked 2 h post-feeding and decreased thereafter whereas that for the control was relatively constant during the entire feeding cycle. Diurnal variation in peptide concentration was rather similar between RD and OD.

  • ε-Poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) is a homopolymer of L-lysine molecules connected between the epsilon amino and alpha carboxyl groups. This polymer is currently used as a natural preservative in food. Insufficient biomass is a major problem in ε-PL fermentation. Here, to improve cell growth and ε-PL productivity, various nitrogen-rich nutrients were supplemented into flask cultures after 16 h cultivation, marking the onset of ε-PL biosynthesis. Yeast extract, soybean powder, corn powder, and beef extract significantly improved cell growth. In terms of ε-PL productivity, yeast extract at 0.5% (w/v) gave the maximum yield (2.24 g/l), 115.4% higher than the control (1.04 g/l), followed by soybean powder (1.86 g/l) at 1% (w/v) and corn powder (1.72 g/l) at 1% (w/v). However, supplementation with beef extract inhibited ε-PL production. The optimal time for supplementation for all nutrients examined was at 16 h cultivation. The kinetics of yeast-extract-supplemented cultures showed enhanced cell growth and production duration. Thus, the most commonly used two-stage pH control fed-batch fermentation method was modified by omitting the pH 5.0-controlled period, and coupling the procedure with nutrient feeding in the pH 3.9-controlled phase. Using this process, by continuously feeding 0.5 g/h of yeast extract, soybean powder, or corn powder into cultures in a 30 L fermenter, the final ε-PL titer reached 28.2 g/l, 23.7 g/l, and 21.4 g/l, respectively, 91.8%, 61.2%, and 45.6% higher than that of the control (14.7 g/l). This describes a promising option for the mass production of ε-PL.

  • In this paper, two ports feeding a microstrip patch antenna using a quadrature hybrid circuit was proposed to enhance the bandwidth for the global positioning system(GPS). The square patch was designed, and the probe feeding was applied. The quadrature hybrid chip circuit for two-port feeding was designed, and output ports that have a 90-degree phase difference feed to the patch antenna. The designed patch and quadrature hybrid circuit were implemented on an FR4 board, and were combined. The measurement of the bandwidth within a voltage standing wave ratio(VSWR) of 2:1 and axial ratio(AR) in 3dB were wide band as 29% BW (1,230~1,700 MHz) and 15.87% BW (1,400~1,650 MHz), respectively. Antenna gain were measured 2.75dBi at the center frequency.

  • One of the major challenges in metabolic engineering for enhanced synthesis of value-added chemicals is to design and develop new strains that can be translated into well-controlled fermentation processes using bioreactors. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of various fed-batch strategies in the performance of metabolically engineered Pseudomonas putida strains, ${\Delta}gcd$ and ${\Delta}gcd-pgl$, for improving production of medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs) using glucose as the only carbon source. First we developed a fed-batch process that comprised an initial phase of biomass accumulation based on an exponential feeding carbon-limited strategy. For the mcl-PHA accumulation stage, three induction techniques were tested under nitrogen limitation. The substrate-pulse feeding was more efficient than the constant-feeding approach to promote the accumulation of the desirable product. Nonetheless, the most efficient approach for maximum PHA synthesis was the application of a dissolved-oxygen-stat feeding strategy (DO-stat), where P. putida ${\Delta}gcd$ mutant strain showed a final PHA content and specific PHA productivity of 67% and $0.83g{\cdot}l^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$, respectively. To our knowledge, this mcl-PHA titer is the highest value that has been ever reported using glucose as the sole carbon and energy source. Our results also highlighted the effect of different fed-batch strategies upon the extent of realization of the intended metabolic modification of the mutant strains.

  • This paper proposes a circularly polarized microstrip antenna using an I-shape ground slot perturbation and a perpendicular feeding network. The proposed antenna consists of the symmetrical and perpendicular feeding and the microstrip square radiator loaded with the I-shape ground slot perturbation. The left-handed circular polarization(LHCP) formed by a 90-degree phase difference can be radiated by the perpendicular feeding network and the ground slot perturbation. An implemented antenna is designed for the use in the satellite communication system operated in S-band of 2.2 GHz, and is to be the 91 MHz of -10 dB bandwidth. The measured results of the antenna gain, far-field radiation pattern, and axial ratio agree well with the simulation results.

  • The objective of this research was to evaluate live-feed effect enriched with Moringa oleifera Leaves upon the rate of metamorphosis and survival from zoea to megalopa of Scylla olivacea larva. The study utilized a live feed consisting of Rotifer (Branchionus plicatilis) and Artemia (Artemia salina) that were supplemented with moringa leaf powder. The enrichment process involved soaking the feed in solutions containing 0, 50, 100, and 150 mg/L of the powder The levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were quantified following the enrichment of the live feed. A further phase involved conducting a feeding study using mud crab larvae. This experiment was conducted with three replications. Feeding mud crab larvae using rotifers starts from stage 1 of zoea to megalopa with a frequency of 2 times a day at a 30 ind/mL density, and using artemia nauplius was from the zoea 2 to megalopa with a frequency of feeding two times a day at a 5 ind/mL density. The results showed that moringa leaf powder could improve EPA and DHA more significant in Rotifer than in Artemia. Combined rotifer and Artemia nauplii enrichment with 100 mg/L of moringa leaf powder positively impacted the proximate mud crab. This treatment also implies that the metamorphosis of mud crab from zoea 1 stage to megalopa become faster than other treatment. The development from zoea 1 to megalopa stage takes around 16 days. The treatment that yielded the highest survival rate (SR) was feeding mud crab larvae with enhanced live feed containing 100 mg/L of moringa leaf powder. This study demonstrated that the incorporation of moringa leaf powder into live feed can enhance the physical condition of mud crab larvae. Furthermore, it suggests that this enrichment can accelerate the progression of developmental stages and enhance the SR of mud crab larvae when reared under controlled settings.
