  • Cornus alba (CA) geographically distributes in Korea, Japan, Northeast China and Russia. The cornus species have been used traditionally as anti-inflammatory, hemostatic and diuretic in Korea. Previously, it was reported CA and its separated components have excellent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-prostate cancer efficacy. Present work, the validation and content determination was tried on the ellagitannin, cornusiin B which were isolated from the CA by using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). As a result, the content of cornusiin B were 3.07% in ethanolic extract of CA.

  • The new assay method was developed by using young chicks instead of frogs for screening of anti-emetic compounds from natural sources. Comparing with our previous method using leopard and ranid frogs, the advantages of the new method were not only completely parallel results but also decreasing standard errors. Hinesol and eudesmol were isolated from MeOH extract of Atractylodes lancea rhizome as the anti-emetic principles.

  • This study presents a detailed pharmacognostical study of the root and leaf of the crude drug Clerodendrum viscosum Vent. (Verbenaceae), an important plant in the Indian system of medicine. The root and leaf samples were studied using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended-physicochemical determinations, and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physicochemical, morphological, and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of C. viscosum root and leaf, and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

  • This study presents a detailed pharmacognostical study of the underground portion of the crude drug Sphaeranthus indicus Linn. (Asteraceae), an important plant in the Indian system of medicine. The root and stolon were studied using procedures of light, conofocal microscopy, WHO recommended-physicochemical determinations, and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physicochemical, morphological, and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to identify and establish the authenticity of S. indicus root and stolon.

  • The phytochemical study of the underground parts of Gardenia jasminoides var. radicans Makino (Rubiaceae) led to the isolation of five coumarins. On the basis of spectroscopic evidences, the structures of these compounds were charaterized as ferulic acid(l), 5,8-di-(3-methyl-2,3-dihydroxybutyloxylpsoralen)(2), skimmin(3), uracil(4), $3-0-{\alpha}-D-glucopyranosyl-(1{\rightarrow}4)-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyloxypeucedanin$ hydrates(5), respectively.

  • Antidiabetic treatment with tubers of Asparagus racemosus (Liliaceae) extract (l00 and 250 mg/kg body weight) for three weeks showed significant reduction in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and glutathione reductase (GSH-R) in both liver and kidney. The treatment with A. racemosus significantly altered the glutathione (GSH) and GSH-R to be comparable with the control group. A. racemosus and glibenclamide treated rats showed decreased lipid peroxidation that is associated with increased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT). The ability of A. racemosus on tissue lipid per oxidation and antioxidant status in diabetic animals has not been studied before. The result of this study thus shows that though, A. racemosus possesses moderate antidiabetic activity, but it exhibits potent antioxidant potential in diabetic conditions.

  • The bark of Careya arborea Roxb. (Barringtoniacae) is used against various disorders in Indian systems of medicine, namely astringent, anthelmintic, in tumors, dyspepsia, colic, bronchitis, urinary discharges, piles, lecucoderma, skin diseases, epileptic fits, diarrhoea. The juice of the fresh bark with honey is given as a demulcent in coughs and colds, infusion of the fresh bark is used to treat snake bite by applying to the bitten part and also taken internally. The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the bark sample using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physico-chemical, morphological and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of C. arborea bark and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other allied species.

  • Two Lignans Phyllanthin and Hypophyllanthin, and a steroid ${\beta}-sitosterol$ has been isolated from the leaves of Phyllanthus debilis and their structures were established by spectral analysis and direct comparison with authentic samples. This is the first report of occurrence of these compound from P.debilis.
