Effect of soil residue paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4-dipyridinium dichloride) on growth of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Sacheon No.6 and cv. Tapgolbori) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Alcheon and Danyeop] was investigated. Changes in soil residue paraquat during the cultivation period and residue amount in the p1ants at harvest were also determined. Experiments were conducted at two paraquat residue conditions; the first was done in an apple orchard soil where paraquat residue recorded 30.2 ppm in 1996, but decreased to about 9 to 9.8 ppm at the time of crop seeding and the second was conducted in the soil fortified to about 27 to 32 ppm paraquat residue. In both conditions, no crop injury due to the residue paraquat was observed and number of emerged seedlings and plant height of the two crops were not affected by soil residue paraquat. Residue amount of paraquat in the plants occurred less than 0.5 ppm detection limit. At the first condition, soil residue paraquat was further slightly decreased for 90 days after seeding, while no great change in the residue level was found at the second condition for 30 days after seeding. The results suggest that no carry-over effect occurs at about 30 ppm of soil residue paraquat and at present crop cultivation in Korean orchard soils are safe with respect to crop growth and paraquat residue in the plants.
This is the result of pesticide residue monitoring certified Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) by national agricultural cooperative federation (NACF) from 2009 to 2012. NACF evaluated simultaneously 283 pesticide multi-analysis method with GC (ECD, NPD) and HPLC. 6,590 agricultural products were analyzed in this period. As the results 1) detected 20.27% in 2009, 23.42% in 2010, 28.07% in 2011 and finally 31.75% in 2012, respectively. There was the total detected pesticide residue in the agricultural products. The violated ratio of agricultural products were 2.25% in 2009, 1.82% in 2010, 1.67% in 2011 and 3.47% in 2012, respectively. 13 pesticides went over the maximum residue limits (MRLs); carbendazim was the predominant violation. 40 pesticides; endosulfan was the predominant detected pesticide did not registered respectively crops in Korea. Most agricultural products that were under the MRLs met the safety standard, however agricultural products that contain neither registered nor set up MRL any level for example endosulfan in strawberry. Agricultural products that go over the MRLs with permitted pesticides, for example carbendazim in apple, are rejected. Because of these intricacies continual observation and evaluation will be need during GAP agricultural cultivation.
In order to survey the residual characteristics of pesticides and assess their safeties in the agricultural products from markets, the agricultural products were purchased from the wholesale and traditional markets in Cheongju and Jeonju and analyzed the pesticide residues in them. No pesticide residues were found in samples from Cheongju, whereas, in case of samples collected from Jeonju, 3 pesticides including chlorothalonil were detected from 5 samples such as eggplant from wholesale market and 3 pesticides including azoxystrobin were found in tomato and grape from traditional market. Pesticide residues were detected from 10.9% of the total samples and detection levels were less than their maximum residue levels. Their estimated daily intakes ranged from 0.00102 to 0.03616% of their acceptable daily intakes, representing residue levels of the pesticides detected were evaluated to be safe.
This study was conducted to compare of the pesticide residue amounts in fruit trees applied by different sprayers and spray volumes. Apple tree was used as a sample tree, and speed sprayer, power sprayer and knapsack motorized sprayer were tested. For similar sprayer and spray volume, the concentration of fluquinconazole and flusilazole in apple leaves were obtained respectively, for speed sprayer 8.33 and 2.15 mg/kg, for power sprayer 4.56 and 1.10 mg/kg, and for knapsack 4.55 and 1.12 mg/kg. The results showed that the treatment using speed sprayer had highest efficiency. The pesticide residues in apple leaves sprayed by 3 different spray volumes (560, 336 and 230 L/10a) using speed sprayer were 10.76 mg/kg, 8.32 mg/kg, 6.04 mg/kg on fluqinconazle and 3.04 mg/kg, 2.14 mg/kg and 1.47 mg/kg on flusilazole, respectively, indicating that the higher the volume, the higher the residues. The results from this study can be used as scientific basis for evaluating the field trial data for pesticide registration and the spray volume setting for fruit trees in Korea.
There experiment were carried out to analyze for pesticide residues in 4 kinds of dried fruits collected in northern area of Seoul in 2007~2009. Total of 213 samples were analyzed. According to the results, 20 kinds of residual pesticides were detected. Residual pesticides were detected in 66 samples (31.0%) and 8 samples (3.8%) exceeded maximum residue limits (MRL). Cypermethrin, fenvalerate, endosulfan, chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin were detected frequently. The Pesticide types which were detected in dried furits were revealed in order of pyrethroid > organophosphate > organochloride > dicarboximide. Detection rates of dried fruits were dried chinese matrimony vein (53.0%), dried jujube (34.9%), dried rubi fructus (7.6%) and dried maximowiczia chinensis (4.6%). Based on these results, we investigated the risk assessment from amount of residual pesticide in dried jujube. Range of %ADI were 0.0001~0.0081%, but the value has not effected on human health.
This study was conducted to investigate residue levels of chlorantraniliprole and ethaboxam in inner part and outer leaves of a head-type Korean cabbage. Further, reduction of residues was measured after water washing, blanching and heat-cooking of the outer leaves. For chlorantraniliprole, residues in inner part and outer leaves were <0.01 mg/kg and 0.0757 mg/kg, respectively, in case of three-time spraying 30 days before harvest and <0.01 mg/kg and 1.19 mg/kg, respectively, in case of four-time spraying 10 days before harvest; for ethaboxam, <0.05 mg/kg and 0.216 mg/kg, respectively and <0.05 mg/kg and 1.18 mg/kg, respectively. Chlorantraniliprole and ethaboxam were not detected in inner part of the head-type Korean cabbage. Residue levels in outer leaves were very high as 10-100 fold as those in inner part of the cabbage. Therefore, there is no concern for safety of pesticide residues on kimchi prepared with the inner part of a head-type Korean cabbage. In addition, it needs to be noted that outer leaves should be carefully removed at harvest of the cabbage. Outer leaves water washed and blanched are called as Woogeogi, which is consumed after heat-cooking. In Woogeogi, residue concentrations of two compounds reduced to less than 10%, and further less than 5% by heat-cooking. This indicates that considerable amount of the test pesticide residues in outer leaves of a head-type Korean cabbage removed through water washing, blanching and heat-cooking.
This study examined the effects of treating green tea leaves with ozonated water by evaluating pesticide residue levels and catechin content. The pesticide residue levels of tea leaves treated with carbendazim, captain, diazinon, fenthim, dichlorvos, and chlorpyrifos ranged from 43.2 to 48.2 ppm. For leaves treated by soaking or watering with tap water, or with 0.25 ppm of ozone water for 30 min. Pesticide residue levels were reduced by 24.0-30.2%, 30.3-33.6%, 52.4-70.5%, and 65.5-80.2%, respectively. No major differences in catechin content were observed in the leaves according to the soaking and rinsing treatments using ozonated or tap water.

This survey was carried out in 2014 to estimate the pesticide residue levels in commercial environment-friendly agricultural products in Seoul metropolitan area. Pesticide residues in 27 commodities were examined and analyzed using LC-MS/MS, which can simultaneously detect up to 85 pesticides. A total of 441 samples were collected and analyzed. Among the detected samples, the residue levels in 1.2% of organic agricultural products and 2.2% of pesticide-free agricultural products exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs); hence, 1.8% of the total samples exceeded the MRLs. The safety of the detected pesticides was assessed by monitoring the acceptable daily intake level (ADI) and acceptable dietary exposure (ADE) to the pesticides via consumption of the commodities. ADI and ADE are found to be 0.07728-9.46530% and 0.00141-0.17210%, respectively, which means that the residual pesticides in the environmental-friendly agricultural products in Korea are below the safe limit and therefore, pose no potential public health risks.

This study was performed to investigate pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL) in amaranth, to estimate biological half-life of emamectin benzoate and identify the characteristics of the residue. Pesticides of standard and double appplication rate, were sprayed once on amaranth at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14 days before harvest. Amaranth sample was extracted with acetonitrile and partitioned with dichloromethane, and pesticide residues were determined with LC/MS/MS. The limit of detection of emamectin benzoate was 0.01 mg/kg. Recoveries of emamectin benzoate ($B_{1a}$, $B_{1b}$) at two fortification levels of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg, $B_{1a}$ were $93.3{\pm}0.7%$ and $93.2{\pm}7.7%$, $B_{1b}$ were $106.6{\pm}1.9%$ and $80.5{\pm}6.6%$, respectively. The biological half-lives of emamectin benzoate were about 2.0 days at standard application rate and 1.7 days at double application rate, respectively. The PHRL of emamectin benzoate were recommended as 0.84 mg/kg for 10 days before harvest.
The official analytical method of residue pesticides in herbal medicines by KFDA cannot be applied to all of the pesticides and herbal medicines because of various active materials in herbal medicines and various physicochemical properties of pesticides. Moreover, liquid-liquid partition uses harmful solvents such as methylene chloride and is consuming a lot of time and effort. In order to improve the problems, we have studied for the availability of the analytical method applying the macroporous diatomaceous earth (MDE) column instead of liquid-liquid partition to simultaneously analyze five pesticides in two dried herbal medicines. The results showed that the recovery rates of acetamiprid and azoxystrobin in Astragalus root by GC/ECD ranged from 89.6 to 94.1%, from 86.8 to 94.4%, respectively, and those of bifenthrin, chlorfenapyr, chlorpyrifos in Cnidii Rhizoma by GC/MS ranged from 83.6 to 88.4%, from 77.4 to 83.8%, from 82.6 to 84.3%, respectively. Also, the coefficients of variation (CV) for triplication ranged from 0.5 to 1.7%. The results satisfied the criteria of residue pesticide analysis, setting 70~120% for the recovery rate and below 10% for the coefficient of variation. The improved methods are safer to residue pesticide analysts, faster and less laborious than the KFDA official method.
