Efficient Circular Object Pose Determination

  • This paper presents the efficient algorithms for the pose determination of a circular object with and without a priori knowledge of the object radius. The developed algorithms valid for a circular object are the result of the elaboration of Ma's work [2], which determines the pose of a conic object from two perspective views. First, the geometric constraint of a circular object and its projection on the image plane of a camera is described. The number of perspective views required for the object pose determination with and without a priori knowledge of the object radius is also discussed. Second, with a priori knowledge of the object radius, the pose of a circular object is determined from a single perspective view. The object pose information, expressed by two surface normal vectors and one position vector, is given in a closed form and with no ambiguity. Third, without a priori knowledge of the object radius, the pose of a circular object is determined from two perspective views. While the surface normal vectors are obtained from the first view, the position vector is obtained from the two views.

  • 차량의 주행속도는 설계일관성을 평가하는 주요한 척도로 활용되며 그 중 곡선반경은 여러 연구에서 공통적으로 제시한 주된 요인으로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구에서는 복합선형에서 설계속도별 적정 평면곡선반경 범위기준을 정립하고 운전자의 인지 행태를 나타낼 수 있는 인지반경을 정립하여 입체선형에서 적합한 평면곡선반경을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째, 본 연구에서는 저속차량의 방해요소를 최소화하기 위하여 입체선형을 고려한 도로의 임의지점에서 횡방향 미끄럼 마찰계수와 주행방향 미끄럼 마찰계수를 동시에 고려하여 설계속도와 종단경사별 평면곡선반경을 제시하였다. 둘째, 본 연구에서는 곡선부 인지반경을 통하여 평면 곡선부와 편평한 종단경사가 조합된 경우, 평면 곡선부와 종단곡선부가 조합된 경우를 비교한 후, 곡선부 인지반경을 산정하여 설계속도별 적정 평면곡선반경과 인지반경 비율을 제시하였다.

Canal 곡면의 투시 윤곽곡선의 매개변수화 및 구조 분석 (The Parametrization and Structure Analysis for a Perspective Silhouette of a Canal Surface)

  • 본 논문에서는 canal 곡면의 투시 윤곽곡선 (perspective silhouette)에 대한 매개변수화 (parametrization) 방법과 윤곽곡선을 이루는 모든 연결된 구성요소 (connected component)를 발견하는 효율적이고 안정성 있는 알고리즘을 제시한다. Canal 곡면은 반경이 변화하면서 이동하는 구 (moving sphere)의 외곽곡면 (envelope surface)이며, 구의 중심점의 궤적을 나타내는 곡선 C(t)와 구의 반경 함수 r(t)에 의해 정의된다. 이동 구는 canal 곡면과 원에서 교차한다. Canal 곡면을 원의 집합으로 분할함으로써, 각각의 원 위에서 주어진 관측점에 대한 투시적 윤곽곡선을 구성하는 점을 계산하여 매개변수화하는 방법을 제시한다. 고정된 중심점 $C(t_*)$와 반경 $r(t_*)$를 갖는 이동 구는 canal 곡면과 하나의 원 $K(t_*)$에서 교차한다. 또한 이동 구를 관측점에서 볼 때의 윤곽곡선도 다른 하나의 원 $Q(t_*)$을 구성한다. 두 원 $K(t_*)$$Q(t_*)$가 한 점에서 접하게 되는 t의 값을 구함으로써 canal 곡면에 대한 윤곽곡선을 이루는 모든 연결된 구성요소를 발견하는 효율적인 방법을 제시한다.

Effects of Thinning and Climate on Stem Radial Fluctuations of Pinus ponderosa and Pinus lambertiana in the Sierra Nevada

  • Due to the multiple ecosystem benefits that iconic large, old growth trees provide, forest managers are applying thinning treatments around these legacy trees to improve their vigor and reduce mortality, especially in the face of climate change and other forest health threats. One objectives of this study was to analyze sub-hourly stem fluctuations of legacy ponderosa (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. Ex P. & C. Laws) and sugar pines (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.) in the mixed-conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada in multiple different radius thinning treatments to assess the short-term effects of these treatments. Thinning treatments applied were: R30C0 (9.1 m radius), R30C2 (9.1 m radius leaving 2 competitors), and RD1.2 (radius equaling DBH multiplied by 1 ft/in multiplied by 1.25). The other objective was to assess climatic drivers of hourly stem fluctuations. Using the dendrometeR package, we gathered daily statistics (i.e. daily amplitude) of the stem fluctuations, as well as stem cycle statistics such as duration and magnitude of contraction, expansion, and stem radial increment. We then performed correlation analyses to assess the climatic drivers of stem fluctuations and to determine which radial thinning treatment was most effective at improving growth. We found an important role that mean solar radiation, air temperature, and relative humidity play in stem variations of both species. One of the main findings from a management perspective was that the RD1.2 treatment group allowed both species to contract less on warmer and higher solar radiation days. Furthermore, sugar pine put on more stem radial increment on higher solar radiation days. These findings suggest that the extended radius RD1.2 thinning treatment may be the most effective at releasing legacy sugar and ponderosa pine trees compared to the other forest management treatments applied.

UV Perspective for Dynamically Old and Young Clusters of Galaxies: Fornax and Virgo

  • We present ultraviolet (UV) photometric properties of galaxies in two clusters, the Fornax and Virgo, with different dynamical conditions. We construct UV color-magnitude relations (CMRs) of galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters using GALEX UV data matching with optical B band data. Elliptical and lenticular galaxies locate on red sequence in UV CMRs and show UV upturn phenomenon in both clusters. While dwarf lenticular galaxies (dS0s) in the Fornax also follow the extension of red sequence of giant early type galaxies, they are redder than dS0s in the Virgo at a given magnitude. We also investigated the effect of neighbor galaxies and cluster environment to the UV properties. In the space of projected clustercentric radius and projected nearest neighbor galaxy distance, we found that red (NUV-B>3) galaxy fraction of the Fornax depends entirely on clustercentric radius. However, in the case of Virgo, galaxy colors are also affected by interactions between galaxies outside the cluster virial radius. We suggest that UV properties of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster is likely consistent with its dynamically evolved system compared to the Virgo cluster.

  • Educators have found that the concept of randomness is often misunderstood by students. Chance recently pointed out that students should be introduced to the concept of randomness through the use of simulations. In this article, we studied various aspects of the probability distribution off linear random path in a circle and introduce some related simulations to guide student exploration and discovery. Consider a random line segment that crosses a circle with a certain radius. Perhaps it can be considered to be a path that an airplane shows up and flies into a random direction in a monitor. What is the expected amount of flying distance through the monitor, and the expected variation\ulcorner Are we monitoring what we see scientifically\ulcorner This article studies the probability distribution and some related aspects of a linear random path within a circular monitor. Some simulative activity is also introduced which can be used in a statistics or probability classes.

Experimental study on Re number effects on aerodynamic characteristics of 2D square prisms with corner modifications

  • Simultaneous pressure measurements on 2D square prisms with various corner modifications were performed in uniform flow with low turbulence level, and the testing Reynolds numbers varied from $1.0{\times}10^5$ to $4.8{\times}10^5$. Experimental models were a square prism, three chamfered-corner square prisms (B/D=5%, 10%, and 15%, where B is the chamfered corner dimension and D is the cross-sectional dimension), and six rounded-corner square prisms (R/D =5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, where R is the corner radius). Experimental results of drag coefficients, wind pressure distributions, power spectra of aerodynamic force coefficients, and Strouhal numbers are presented. Ten models are divided into various categories according to the variations of mean drag coefficients with Reynolds number. The mean drag coefficients of models with $B/D{\leq}15%$ and $R/D{\leq}15%$ are unaffected by the Reynolds number. On the contrary, the mean drag coefficients of models with R/D=20%, 30%, and 40% are obviously dependent on Reynolds number. Wind pressure distributions around each model are analyzed according to the categorized results.The influence mechanisms of corner modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of the square prism are revealed from the perspective of flow around the model, which can be obtained by analyzing the local pressures acting on the model surface.

Terahertz Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Five Citrates

  • This research investigation employs a terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy system to study the terahertz spectral characteristics of five different citrates in both solution and solid state. The citrates under examination are lithium citrate, monosodium citrate, disodium citrate, trisodium citrate, and potassium citrate. The results show that the THz absorption coefficients of the first four citrate solutions exhibit a decreasing trend with increasing concentration. However, the potassium citrate solution shows an opposite phenomenon. At the same time, the absorption coefficients of lithium citrate, trisodium citrate, and potassium citrate solutions are compared at the same concentration. The results indicate that the absorption coefficient of citrate solution increases in proportion to the increase of metal cation radius, which is explained from the perspective of the influence of metal cations on hydrogen bonds. In addition, we also study the absorption peaks of solid citrates, and characterize the formation mechanism of the absorption peaks by molecular dynamics simulations. This methodology can be further extended to the study of multitudinous salts, presenting theoretical foundations for the detection in food and medicine industries.

향상된 장애물 극복형 실내 이·승강 전동휠체어의 설계 및 제작 (Design and Manufacture of Improved Obstacle-Overcoming type Indoor Moving and Lifting Electric Wheelchair)

  • 인구 고령화와 건강 복지에 대한 사회적 관심이 높아지면서 재활복지기를 포함한 실버 및 헬스케어 산업과 관련한 연구들이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존에 1차적으로 설계·제작되었던 이·승강 전동휠체어를 사용자 측면에서 보다 더 안전성과 편의성을 갖도록 개선하고자 하였다. 사용자 체형을 고려한 헤드레스트 높이조절 기능의 시트 디자인, 사용성 증대를 위한 암레스트의 길이조절 및 95° 회전 기능, 사용자 탑승 편의성을 위한 바닥까지의 시트하강 및 운행 시 승강할 수 있는 기능, 캐스터 회전반경 및 안전성 증대를 위한 발판 추가 및 풋레스트 길이 조절 기능, 승·하강 시 흔들림 방지를 위한 프레임 및 승·하강 링크 설계 등을 개선시켰다. 또한 안전주행을 위한 컨트롤러 및 드라이브 부문과 사용자 편의성 측면의 기능들을 추가적으로 설계·제작하였다. 추가 기능을 보완하여 제작된 실내 전동휠체어의 동작 상태를 평가하기 위해 구동 실험을 수행하였다. 연속 주행시간, 회전반경, 승·하강 최대 하중, 최대 승강 높이, 소음레벨, 운행 보조센서 센싱 최소거리, 서버 및 앱 프로그램 상호연동 및 기기호환성, 듀티 사이클 최대 오차율의 성능실험을 수행하였다. 실험 결과, 더 개선하여 설계·제작한 전동휠체어는 시험 목표 값을 달성하였으며, 성공적으로 동작하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 향후 연구로는 개선하여 제작된 이·승강 전동휠체어에 대해 사용자 측면에서의 사용성 평가를 수행할 것이다.

한반도 주변에서 MODIS와 NCEP/NCAR 재분석 자료를 이용한 에어로졸과 구름의 연관성 분석 (An Analysis of Aerosol-Cloud Relationship Using MODIS and NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Data around Korea)

  • MODIS/Terra level 3 and NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data from 2001 to 2008 have been analyzed to understand long-term aerosol and cloud optical properties, and their relationships around Korea. Interestingly, cloud fraction(CF) has the similar annual variation to aerosol optical depth (${\tau}_a$) without any temporal significant trend. Horizontal distributions of ${\tau}_a$ showed the substantial horizontal gradient from China to Korea, especially with the strong difference over the Yellow Sea, which could represent the evidence of the anthropogenic influence from China in the perspective of long-term average. Specifically the negative correlations between ${\tau}_a$ and liquid-phase cloud effective radius ($r_e$) were shown on the monthly-average basis, only in summer with significant associations over the Yellow Sea, but not in the other seasons and/or specific regions. Relationship between ${\tau}_a$ and CF for the low-level liquid-phase clouds exhibited the overall positive correlation, being consistent with cloud lifetime effect. Meanwhile static stability showed no deterministic relationships with ${\tau}_a$ as well as CF. The dependence of aerosol-cloud relationship on the meteorological conditions should be examined more in detail with the satellite remote sensing and reanalysis data.
