  • The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effects of "characteristics for household management" and "attitudes toward household management" on wives' personal expenses. The data were obtained from the F-GENS Korea Panel Survey of Ochanomizu University. The responses were gathered from married people in Seoul and its surrounding metropolitan area. The sample for this study was comprised of 473 married women. ANOVA and multiple-regression models were used to analyze the data. The results are summarized below. First, 13.5 percent of the respondents have zero personal expenses. Second, the personal expenses among the wives differed depending on their annual average income levels. Also, their personal expenses differed based on their type of employment. Third, the "expenditure ratio for family" and "expenditure ratio for children" negatively affected their personal expenses. Fourth, the women who had responsibility for the management of their households had lower personal expenses than the others.

  • Propionibacterium acnes is the pharmacological target site of antiacne drugs. We have examined the antiacne activity of ninety seven natural products which have been used as Korean traditional medicines in various skin disorders. The antibacterial activity of extracts from the natural products were evaluated against P. acnes ATCC 9616 by disc method. Twelve natural products showed the potent antibacterial activity against P. acnes, and were, selected for the minimal inhibitory concentration(MC) against P. acnes. MICs of nine extracts were below 0.3% (w/v) and Sophora flavescens showed the most potent activity with a MIC of less than 0.008%(w/v) against P. acnes. Thus, the results suggest that nine natural products including S. flavescens can be developed as sources of promising potent antiacne agents.

  • In this study, the optimum analytical conditions for determination of distribution of propylene oxide in a nonionic surfactant and separation of fatty alcohols were investigated by Reversed Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. To analyse the distribution of propylene oxide (PO) and carbon chain length of a fatty alcohol, we derivatized samples for the purpose of using a UV detector. Also, we studied the influences of columns and mobile phase composition to obtain the optimum separation conditions. In our experiment, Waters Symmetry $C_8(3.9{\times}150mm)$ column was used. And the optimum condition were obtained by gradient elution with methanol and water as the mobile phase. In the plot of log k' vs composition of water in the binary phase, the linerality was very good. We ploted the calibration curve to conform the quality of fatty alcohol, a good linerality was obtained.

  • The purpose of this research is to prepare fundamental data which will help the proposal for future a small size housing's plan and direction by looking into customers needs of community space and service for personal household because the personal household demand of the housing market is expected to be the most importance. To accomplish this, 150 people of age range from 20 to 30 who lives alone in Seoul has been surveyed from November 15th to 25th 20008. Also the socio-demographic characteristic, satisfaction of housing life, living characteristic and etc. of young people have been examined.

  • The antioxidative effect of the extracts from the leaves and fruits of Acer ginnala against free radicals was studied by two different methods using DPPH radical-generating system, and hydroxyl radical-generating system $(Cu^{++}/H_2O_2\;system)$ which induces DNA strand breaking. Compared with well known antioxidative plants, green tea, Scutellaria baicalensis, the Acer ginnala extracts showed excellent radical-scavenging activity in DPPH radical-generating system and inhibited effectively hydroxyl radical induced-DNA strand breaking in a concentration-dependent manner in $Cu^{++}/H_2O_2$ system whereas the green tea extract stimulated the strand breaking at a low concentration. These results suggest that he extracts from the leaves and fruits of Acer ginnula could be good antioxidative agents.

  • This study attempts to explore the effects of personal, household, and environmental factors on household financial management in financial dimensions. Financial management behaviors are constructed with 5 dimensions : income, expenditure, debt, investment and risk management. The specific objectives of this study are : 1) to examine the level of the financial management behavior to the sub-dimensions. 2) to investigate the factors which influence on the level of financial management behavior to the dimensions. The sample consisted of 792 married women living in Seoul. The statistical methods used for analysis included Reliability, Frequencies, Percent, Mean, Standard Deviation, Multiple Regression Analysis. The major results can be summarized as following 1) Among the sub-dimensions, the score of risk management is the most high, 39.00. 2) There are statistically significant differences in the levels and factors which influence on the financial management behavior to the 5 dimensions.(Korean J of Human Ecology 2(l) : 12-24, 1999)

  • In this study, the relationship between wax matrix in lipstick and sweating was investigated by observing the change of size and shape of wax matrix with sweating by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). For observation by SEM, a lipstick sample was frozen in liquid nitrogen, then the oil in the lipstick was extracted out in cold isopropanol($-70^{\circ}C$) for 1-3days. After isopropanol was evaporated, the sample was sputtered with gold, and examined by SEM. When examined the sweated sample by SEM, the change of wax matrix underneath the surface from fine, uniform structure to coarse, nonuniform structure was observed, which was resulted from the caking of surrounding wax matrix. That is, the oil underneath the surface was migrated to the surface of lipstick with sweating, consequently the wax matrix at that region was rearranged into the coarse matrix. In case of flamed lipstick, sweating was delayed and the wax matrix was much coarser than that of unflamed one. Its larger wax matrix at surface region was good for including oil. The effect of molding temperature on sweating was also studied. As the molding temperature was increased, sweating was greatly reduced and the size of wax matrix was increased. It was also found that sweating was influenced with the compatinility of wax and oil. A formula consisting of wax and oil which have good compatibility has a tendency of reduced sweating and increased size of wax matrix. When pigment was added to wax and oil. It was also found that sweating was influenced with the passage of time by observing a thick membrane of wax on surface of lipstick after a month from molding. In case of some lipsticks, the size of wax matrix was altered to bigger or smaller. In conclusion, the structure of wax matrix at the surface region of lipstick was changed with the process of foaming, molding temperature, compatibility of wax and oil, addition of pigment, and the passage of time. In most cases, as the size of wax matrix was increased, sweating was reduced and delayed.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the relations among wife's job and family life structure of couples, and to compare them between Japan and Korea. The data for this study was obtained from a survey of 247 Japanese couples who were risiding in Osaka and 235 Korean couples in Deagu, 1992. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follow: 1. The contents of Household works is classified into three factors-daily routine houseworks, child-rearing, economic-management of household, in Korea, and into two factors-daily routine houseworks, child and economic management, in Japan. The contents of descision making is classified into four factors-husband's personal sphere, family life management, wife's personal sphere, and home economic sphere, in Korea, and three factors-husband's personal sphere, economic life management of family, and wife's personal sphere, in Japan. 2. In Korea and Japan, wife's job have not effect on couple's marital satisfaction, directly. However, wife's job contribute to husband's share of daily routine houseworks.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine consciousness of household work and participation in adolescents. Partitioned by gender, the personal characteristics, Sociodemographic variables, and parents' household work variables of each respondent was analyzed. The results are summarized as follows. Firstly, adolescents demonstrated positive consciousness on the value, and participation in, of household work. However, participation rates in household work was lower than consciousness. Secondly, male adolescent participation in household work varied according to communication satisfaction with family, father's participation in household work, father's consciousness on equality of both sexes, amount of household work delegated, and amount of household work delegated to each sex. However, female adolescent participation in household work varied according to mothers' employment status, father's participation in household work, amount of household work delegated, and amount of household work delegated to each sex. Finally, father's participation in household work directly, and indirectly, affected male adolescent participation. However, in female adolescents, parents' compliment was the most meaningful variable directly and indirectly related to participation in household work.
