Hydrogen permeation through dense palladium-based membranes has attracted the attention of many scientists largely due to their unmatched potential as hydrogen-selective membranes for membrane reactor applications. Although it is well known that the permeation mechanism of hydrogen through Pd involves various processes such as dissociative adsorption, transitions to and from the bulk Pd, diffusion within Pd, and recombinative desorption, it is still unclear which process mainly limits hydrogen permeation at a given temperature and hydrogen partial pressure. In this study, we report an all-electron density-functional theory study of hydrogen permeation through Pd membrane (using VASP code). Especially, we focus on the variation of the energy barrier of the penetration process from the surface to the bulk with hydrogen coverage, which means the large reduction of the fracture stress in the brittle crack propagation considering Griffith's criterion. It is also found that the penetration energy barrier from the surface to the bulk largely decreases so that it almost vanishes at the coverage 1.25, which means that the penetration process cannot be the rate determining process.
The purpose of this study was to develop transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) for the combination of physostigmine and procyclidine. The effects of various pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) on the percutaneous absorption of procyclidine across hairless mouse skin were evaluated to select an appropriate PSA. In addition, the influences of various vehicles on the percutaneous absorption of procyclidine from PSA matrix across hairless mouse skin were evaluated using flow-through diffusion cell system at $37^{\circ}C$. Physostigmine did not have any influence on the permeation rate of procyclidine. The flux of procyclidine was the highest in silicone and PIB and was relatively lower in SIS, Acryl, and SBS adhesive matrices, however, their use was limited by the crystallization of the drug in the matrix. Among acrylic adhesives, the permeability of procyclidine was the highest from poly (ethylene oxide) grafted acrylic adhesive. Some enhancers show different enhancing effect depending on the drug, however, many of the tested enhancers showed enhancing effect for the permeation of both procyclidine and physostigmine to some extent. $Crovol^{\circledR}$ EP 40 showed the highest enhancing effect on the permeation of both compounds. The size of TDDS to provide required permeation rate was estimated to be $35\;cm^2$ based on available information.
The aims of this study were to encapsulate arbutin (AR) in liposome to enhance the skin-whitening activity, and to investigate the effect of liposome formulation on the entrapment efficiency (EE%), skin permeation rate and skin deposition. The liposomes were prepared by a film dispersion method with several different formulations and were separated from the solution by using the gel-filtration method. The physical (size distribution, morphology) and chemical (drug entrapment efficiency, hairless mouse skin permeation and deposition) properties of liposomes were characterized. The entrapment efficiency in all liposome formulations varied between 4.35% and 17.63%, and was dependent on the lipid content. The particle sizes of liposomes were in the range of $179.9{\sim}212.8\;nm$ in all liposome formulations. Although the permeation rate of AR in the liposome formulations decreased compared with AR solution, the deposition amount of AR in the epidermis/dermis layers increased in AR liposomal formulation. These results suggest that liposomal formulation could enhance the skin deposition of hydrophilic skin-whitening agents, thereby enhancing their activities.
As the concerns of dermal exposure of spray painters to isocyanates in the automobile industry, glove performance was examined like permeation rate and breakthrough time including fatigue test. Methylene chloride was used as the solvent for derivatization of the isocyanates with a 97.5% recovery. Ghost wipe pads were used to wipe the surface of the glove material after chemical penetration through the glove material placed under a disposable test cell. Several solvents were tested, such as thinner(xylene, toluene) and cleaning agent(acetone) by using a standard permeation test cell(AS/NZS standard 2161. part 10.3). Solvents accelerate chemical permeation through the gloves more quickly than pure HDI hardener products. The longest breakthrough times were from Nitrosolve gloves, not detected in 8 hours, compared with others like Latex, Neoprene, TNT and Dermo Plus. Therefore Nitrosolve gloves could be recommended as personal protective equipment in crash repair shops. In addition, revised exposure limit of korean regulation should be suggested for employee to minimize the risk of health symptoms.

Using an experimental method named filtration-permeation, the influence of sedimentation during filtration was studied for the suspensions composed of particles and that of flocs. The average specific cake resistances measured by filtration do not give accurate values because of the sedimentations during filtration, but the permeation data give quite accurate values. The prolonged permeation rates for the cake formed from particulate suspension do not change, but that rate from the floc filtration changes by the sweeping of flocculant. It is proposed that the cake compressibility can be measured with one set of filtration-permeation experiment by step increase of pressure during permeation period. The another experimental method which can shorten experimental time for floc filtration using filtrationpermeation is also proposed.
Objectives: Phthalates are used in a large variety of products including as coatings of pharmaceutical tablets, film formers, stabilizers, dispersants, emulsifying agents, and suspending agents. They have been the subject of great public concern in recent years. The extensive uses of this material have attracted attention and issues regarding its safety have been raised. Methods: In this study, three types of phthalate skin permeation were studied using matrixes such as ointments, creams and lotions in vitro. The absorption of phthalate diesters [Dimethyl phthalate (DMP), Di-n-propyl phthalate (DPP) and Di-n-pentyl phthalate (DNPP)] using film former has been measured in vitro through rat skin. Epidermal membranes were set up in Franz diffusion cells and their permeability to PBS measured in order to establish the integrity of the skin before the phthalates were applied to the epidermal surface. Results: Absorption rates for each phthalate ester were determined and permeability assessment made to quantify any irreversible alterations in barrier function due to contact with the esters. Types of phthalate in vitro experimental results quickly appeared in the following order DMP > DPP ${\geq}$ DNPP. Conclusions: In the experimental results, lotion> cream> ointment, and the permeation rate of lotion with a great amount of moisture was the fastest. Skin permeation rate is generally influenced by the chemical characteristics of a given chemical, such as molecular weight and lipophilicity. As the esters became more lipophilic and less hydrophilic, the rate of absorption decreased.

The permeation characteristics were investigated for pure carbon dioxide and methane through asymmetric cellulose acetate(CA) membrane, composite cellulose acetate membrane and asymmetric cellulose triacetate(CTA) membrane. In particular, the effect of operating pressure on the permeation performance was examined. And the permeation behavior for a mixture of carbon dioxide and methane ($CO_2/CH_4=57.6/42.4$) was also investigated and compared to the characteristics obtained from pure gases. The experiments were run at the range of partial pressure from 25 to 125 psig, and room temperature. The permeation behaviors of the CA composite and CTA membrane were similiar to those of the CA membrane. The permeation rates of pure carbon dioxide for CA, CA composite and CTA membrane were increased slightly with an increase in upstream partial pressure, while in the case of pure methane they were independent of upstream partial pressure. For a binary mixture of carbon dioxide and methane, abnormal permeation behaviors were observed due to the plasticization of carbon dioxide and the competition effect of each gas. The separation factor and permeation rate for CTA membrane were found to be higher than those for CA membrane, but the mechanical strength of CTA membrane was very poor. And the permeation rate for CA composite membrane was higher than that for CA membrane. Consequently, it can be said that the CA composite membrane is a strong candidate for the separation of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$.

This study was carried out to estimate the effects of the loading conditions on the corrosion of reinforcing bars and permeation of chloride ion. The permeation of chlorides depends not only on the transfer properties in concrete but also on the load applied in the case of reinforced concrete structures. Recent studies reported that the loading conditions affected the corrosion rate of the reinforcing bars under existence of an external current supply. But it was not reported that loading conditions affected corrosion of reinforcing bar caused by the characteristics of permeation and the process of cracking. In this experiment, it was shown that the corrosion of reinforcing bars and the characteristics of permeating were greatly affected by the loading conditions.
After producing 4 kinds of hydrogel materials by mixing the composite preparation in Gardeniae Fructus extracts with ketorolac tromethamine, which is NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), through the experiment of measurement in the tensile strength, in the skin permeation, and in the periodontal-pocket reduction rate, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The tensile strength of a drug indicated the tensile strength 3.5-fold higher compared to the control group, in KGH gel B. 2. The skin-permeation volume in ketorolac tromethamine was highest with $105.62{\mu}m/cm^2$ in KGH gel B for 8 hours, and the permeation volume in geniposide was relatively high with $73.8{\mu}m/cm^2$ in KGE gel A, but the permeation volume in genipin, which is the hydrolysis, represented the highest permeation amount with $50.17{\mu}m/cm^2$ in KGH gel B. 3. In terms of the periodontal-pocket reduction rate, after 4 weeks, KGE gel A showed the falling rate of 23.85% compared to the control group, but did not indicate the significant difference, and KGH gel B represented the reduction rate of 29.46% compared to the control group, thus it indicated the significantly treatment effect.
To investigate the permeability of lidocaine, percutaneous absorption studies were performed using excised hairless mouse skin and the penetration of lidocaine via the skin was determined. To increase the skin permeation of lidocine, the effects of $Labrasol^{(R)}$, $Labrafil^{(R)}$, $Labrafac^{(R)}$ and $Transcutol^{(R)}$ were investigated. The skin permeation of lidocaine was increased when $Labrasol^{(R)}$ and $Transcutol^{(R)}$ were used as permeation enhancer. To evaluate the influence of ultrasound, various factors such as application modes (continuous mode and pulsed mode), frequency (1.0 and 3.0 MHz) and intensity (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 w/$cm^2$) were investigated with lidocaine hydrogel. The pronounced effect of ultrasound on the skin permeation of lidocaine was observed at all ultrasound energy levels. The influence of frequency having an effect on skin permeation rate was higher in the case of using 1 MHz, 2.0 w/$cm^2$ and continuous treatment. As the intensity of ultrasound increased, the permeation of lidocaine was accelerated. The in vivo anesthetic effects were evaluated by two aspects as mechanical threshold and electrical threshold. Six healthy volunteers consented to the randomized, double-blind, and cross-over designed study in each group. In each subject, 3 groups were adapted such as K group (ultrasound with gel base only), L group (lidocaine gel) and B group (ultrasound with lidocaine gel). In conclusion, lidocaine was potent anesthetic which could be block pain threshold effectively. And ultrasound could accelerate the skin penetration of lidocaine. The phonophoretic delivery system could be a good candidate for lidocaine as a local anaesthetic to improve the skin permeation and in vivo anaesthetic effect.
