  • Searching for the clinical effects of colloid solutions that used to increasing the oncotic pressure of priming solutions at the cardiopulmonary bypass, 29 patients [who were diagnosised as simple VSD around 10kg of body weight and scheduled to be operated from June 1990 to December 1990 at Sejong General Hospital] were divided randomly and prospectively to the two groups: A group [15] was received 4gm% albumin as addition to the priming solutions and B Group [14] the same amount of Ringer`s lactated solution. 34 clinical parameters [Body weight, sex, age, body surface area, Qp/Qs, pulmonary arterial pressure, cardiopulmonary bypass time, anesthetic time, intraoperatively infused crystalloid and colloid amount, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum sodium concentration, serum osmolarity, urine osmolarity, urine specific gravity, serum concentration, serum osmolarity, urine osmolarity, urine specific gravity, serum protein, serum albumin concentration, urine output, central venous pressure, postoperatively infused colloid amount, immedediate post-operative peak inspiratory pressure, cardiac index, blood pressure and pump flow during cardiopulmonary bypass, inotro-pic assist, diuretics, extubation period, total drain amount, duration of ICU] were measured and compaired between the two groups. There were no differences of preoperative and operative clinical parameters. And postoper-atively, practically there were no nearly differences at the clinical outcomes between the two groups, but some parameters [cardiac index, PIP, BP and pumpflow during CPB, etc] contributed to being preferable to the Group A at certain times [P<0.05]. Conclusively, it might be thought that the priming solution of cardiopulmonary bypass added by colloid solution had some beneficial effects on the patients, especially younger and associated with complex anomaly to be expected taken longer time of cardiopulmonary bypass, and more studies about the neonatal and complex anomaly cases were needed in that points.

  • Having the ability to keep on yielding stable solutions in problems involving high potential of instability, composite time integration methods have become very popular among scientists. These methods try to split a time step into multiple sub-steps so that each sub-step can be solved using different time integration methods with different behaviors. This paper proposes a new composite time integration in which a time step is divided into two sub-steps; the first sub-step is solved using the well-known Newmark method and the second sub-step is solved using Simpson's Rule of integration. An unconditional stability region is determined for the constant parameters to be chosen from. Also accuracy analysis is perform on the proposed method and proved that minor period elongation as well as a reasonable amount of numerical dissipation is produced in the responses obtained by the proposed method. Finally, in order to provide a practical assessment of the method, several benchmark problems are solved using the proposed method.

  • This paper develops a periodic preventive maintenance(PM) policy following the expiration of warranty. Two types of warranty are considered: renewing warranty and non-renewing warranty. Also, we consider the situation where each PM cost is an increasing function of the PM effect. We determine the optimal number of PM's before replacing the system by a new one and the optimal length of period for the periodic PM following the expiration of warranty. Explicit solutions to determine the optimal periodic PM are presented for the Weibull distribution case.

  • A two degree-of-freedom model of suspended cables is studied for forced resonant response. The method of averaging is used to obtain first-order approximations to the response of the system. A bifurcation analysis of the averaged system is performed in the case of 2-to-1 internal resonance. Nonlinear coupled-mode motions are found to bifurcate from single-mode responses and further bifurcate to limit cycle motions via Hopf bifurcations. The limit cycle solutions undergo period doubling bifurcations to chaos.

  • In this paper we consider the difference equation $$x_{n+1}=\frac{a+bx_{n-k}\;-\;cx_{n-m}}{1+g(x_{n-l})}$$ where a, b, c are nonegative real numbers, k, l, m are nonnegative integers and g(x) is a nonegative real function. The oscillatory and periodic character, the boundedness and the stability of positive solutions of the equation is investigated. The existence and nonexistence of two-period positive solutions are investigated in details. In the last section of the paper we consider a generalization of the equation.

ON THE RATIONAL RECURSIVE SEQUENCE $x_{n+1}=\frac{{\alpha}x_n+{\beta}x_{n-1}+{\gamma}x_{n-2}+{\delta}x_{n-3}}{Ax_n+Bx_{n-1}+Cx_{n-2}+Dx_{n-3}}$

  • We fabricated a multi-layer diffraction grating inside fused silica glass by using a femtosecond laser direct writing method. The femtosecond laser with a wavelength of 515 nm, a pulse width of 250 fs, a repetition rate of 100 kHz, and an average output power of 6 W was used. Two layer diffraction grating with a grating period of $6{\mu}m$ was successfully fabricated with the layer gap of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and $5{\mu}m$, respectively. Also, we investigated the diffraction pattern by illuminating a He-Ne laser beam. Finally, we demonstrated the diffraction grating with a grating period of $3{\mu}m$ by adjusting the gap of each layer with a grating period of $6{\mu}m$. Femtosecond laser direct writing technology of multi-layer has a potential to fabricate the diffraction grating with a grating period of below $1.5{\mu}m$.

  • This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.

  • During the period of 2002 to 2017, the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) had observed time-varying gravity changes with unprecedented accuracy. The GRACE science data centers provide the monthly gravity solutions after removing the sub-monthly mass fluctuation using geophysical models. However, model misfit makes the solutions to be contaminated by aliasing errors, which exhibits peculiar north-south stripes. Two conventional filters are used to reduce the errors, but signals with similar spatial patterns to the errors are also removed during the filtering procedure. This would be particularly problematic for estimating the ice mass changes in Western Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and Antarctic Peninsula (AP) due to their similar spatial pattern to the elongated north-south direction. In this study, we introduce an alternative filter to remove aliasing errors using the Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis. EOF can decompose data into different modes, and thus is useful to separate signals from noise. Therefore, the aliasing errors are effectively suppressed through EOF method. In particular, the month-to-month mass changes in WAIS and AP, which have been significantly contaminated by aliasing errors, can be recovered using EOF method.

  • Background: Electrical conductivity (EC) and pH are important features of nutrient solution, affecting both growth and quality of crops by altering nutrient uptake. Methods and Results: The pH values of nutrient solutions were controlled at 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 and EC values were controlled at 0.68, 0.84, 1.23, 1.41 dS/m. Gingesng root weights were higher during the initial growth period when the plants were treated with low pH and low EC nutrient solutions. However, the higher pH and EC levels, the greater the increase in the rate of root weight between the initial and middle growth periods. The highest ginsenoside amount changed during growth period. The total ginsenoside amount was highest in the root, and the lowest in leaves at 45 and 90 days after treatment, respectively, with solution at a pH of 6.0. After 135 days of treatment, the highest total ginsenoside amount was detected in root treated with soluton with EC values of 1.23 dS/m. Conclusions: For the cultivation of ginseng using a nutriculture system, the pH and EC values of nutrient solutions should to be controlled based on the stage of growth and targeted plant organ (root or leaves).
