A methodology for the identification and coordinates estimation of air cavities under urban ground or sandy soil using its natural poles and natural resonant frequencies is presented. The potential of this methodology was analyzed. Simulation models of PEC (Perfect Electric Conductor)s with various shapes and dimensions were developed using an EM (Electromagnetic) simulator. The Cauchy method was applied to the obtained EM scattering response of various objects from EM simulation models. The natural poles of objects corresponding to its instinct characterization were then extracted. Thus, a library of poles can be generated using their natural poles. The generated library of poles provided the possibility of identifying a target by comparing them with the computed natural poles from a target. The simulation models were made assuming that there is an air cavity under urban ground or sandy soil. The response of the desired target was extracted from the electromagnetic wave scattering data from its simulation model. The coordinates of the target were estimated using the time delay of the impulse response (peak of the impulse response) in the time domain. The MP (Matrix Pencil) method was applied to extract the natural poles of a target. Finally, a 0.2-m-diameter spherical air cavity underground could be estimated by comparing both the pole library of the objects and the calculated natural poles and the natural resonant frequency of the target. The computed location (depth) of a target showed an accuracy of approximately 84 to 93%.

In this paper, the split-ring DGS resonator is proposed and its equivalent circuit are analyzed to design the low pass filter. Compared with the conventional dumbell DGS cell, this structure has a flat fluctuation in low frequency range and a sharp slop at edge frequency. The out-band suppression of the SRR-DGS cell can be improved by placing the open stubs on the conductor line which operates as parallel capacitances. Making use of equivalent circuit analytical method, the characteristics of the improved SRR DGS cell are investigated and applied to design compact low pass filter, which has a low in-band loss, sharp slop and high suppression of more than 35dB within a wide out-band frequency range. The dependence of the transmission characteristic on the dimension of a split ring, such as side-length and split-gap, is analyzed in detail. In addition, an improved SRR DGS cell model with open stubs loaded on the conductor line is then presented to improve the out-band suppression. By using the equivalent-circuit analytical method, an S-band microstrip low-pass filter with perfect low-pass characteristic and high out-band suppression is designed and fabricated.
In this paper, we theoretically examine the characteristics of an Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) constructed of a perfect electric conductor and a normal material having permittivity εr, permeability μr, and thickness L. First, we derived rigorous equations to describe the infinite AMC structure. Then, we studied how the AMC's characteristics are affected by changes in εr, μr and L. The operating center frequency exhibiting a 0° reflection coefficient phase occurs when L is one quarter of a guide wavelength. Therefore, the AMC thickness can be reduced by using a material having a high product of εr and μr. As the ratio μr/εr increases, the bandwidth of the AMC increases (maximum value: 200 %), and its operating frequency decreases. We also find out he bandwidth of the AMC is improved by introducing a loss in the material. To validate the AMC, we design a dipole antenna on the AMC and demonstrate a relationship between AMC phase and dipole antenna's operating frequency by investigating the dipole on the AMC with different pairs of εr and μr.

Large scale superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system requires very high magnetic energy density in its superconducting coils to enhance the energy capacity and efficiency of the system. The recent high temperature superconducting (HTS) conductors, so called 2G conductors, show very good performance under very high magnetic field so that they seem to be perfect materials for the large scale SMES coils. A general shape of the coil system with the 2G HTS conductor has been a tor oid, because the magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the surface of the 2G HTS conductor could be minimized in this shape of coil. However, a toroid coil requires a 3-dimensional computation to acquire the characteristics of its critical current density - magnetic field relations which needs very complicated numerical calculation, very high computer specification, and long calculation time. In this paper, we suggested an analytic and statistical calculation method to acquire the maximum magnetic flux density applied perpendicularly to the surface of the 2G HTS conductor and the stored energy in the toroid coil system. Although the result with this method includes some errors but we could reduce these errors within 5 percent to get a reasonable estimation of the important parameters for design process of the HTS toroid coil system. As a result, the calculation time by the suggested method could be reduced to 0.1 percent of that by the 3-dimensional numerical calculation.
As applications of electromagnetic waves increase, biological effects caused by the EM waves are worried about. Many studies about the biological effects are reported. However, there are only a few reports on protection against the EM waves. The protection should be considered for the researchers who use strong EM waves in their experiments. In this paper, a method of reducing SAR in a cylindrical human model by a shield plate is proposed for RF engineers exposed to strong electromagnetic waves. The shield plate modeled as an arc structure is shown effectively to protect the cylindrical human model from the exposed field.

The shearing process for the sheet metal is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In these precision elements, the burr formation brings a bad effect on the system assembly and demands the additional de-burring process. In this paper, we have developed the desktop-type precision punching system to investigate the burr formation mechanism and present kinematically Punch-die auto aligning methodology, for the purpose of burr unifomizing and minimizing, between the rectangular shaped punch and die. By using the scanning electron microscope, the aligned punching results are compared with the miss-aligned ones. Also, we measured the relative burr heights using the self-designed laser measuring device for insitu self aligning. Since it is hard to get the perfect, so called, burr-free edges during the shearing process, we introduced the ultrasonic do-burring machine. The de-burring operation was carried out by a novel do-burring method, the reversal flow resistance method, under different machining loads and abrasive types. The final do-burring results show the validity of our punching do-burring system pursuing the burr-free punched elements.

Transverse electric modes in parallel plate waveguide of which cut-off frequency is much lower than that of $TE_1$ and $TM_1$ mode generally known as the lowest higher order mode are investigated. Electric and magnetic field components of the modes are evaluated with the assumption that boundaries at both sides are perfect magnetic conductor. The existence of these modes are verified by simulation and experimental measurement of parallel plate waveguide cavity. Changed characteristics from the fact that the boundaries are imperfect are studied.

The Lippmann-Young equation has been widely used in electrowetting to predict the contact-angle change of a droplet on a insulating substrate with respect to the externally-applied electrical voltage. The Lippmann-Young equation is derived by assuming a droplet as a perfect conductor, so that the effect of the electrical double layer and the line tension are not taken into account. The validity of the assumption has never been checked before, systematically. In the present investigation, a modified Lippmann-Young equation is derived taking into account of the effect of the electrical double layer and the line tension. To assess their influence on contact-angle change in electrowetting, the electrostatic field around the three-phase contact line is analyzed by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation numerically. The validity of the numerical methods is verified by using the past theoretical results on the electrostatic field around a wedge-shaped geometry, which shows fairly good agreement. The results of the present investigation clearly indicate that the effect of the electrical double layer and the line tension is negligible for a millimeter-sized droplet. On the other hand, for a micron-sized droplet, the effect of the line tension can become a dominating factor which controls the contact-angle change in electrowetting.
Ionic liquid (IL) is a salt presents in a liquid form at room temperature. Recently, it attracts huge attention due to its possibilities as a clean solvent, electrolyte, and catalyst. In the present work, the charging behavior of six different ILs were investigated using droplet contact charging phenomenon in a dielectric medium. Basically, the charging of an IL droplet can be explained by a perfect conductor theory. However, there were several different features depending on the species of ions of ILs, which requires rigorous molecular level modeling of charge transport through electrochemical reaction of IL. We hope the present results contribute to build up fundamental understanding of electrochemical charge transport of IL.

A MF/HF marine whip antenna with side whips, which are connected at an angle with the straight main whip, has reported In this paper, the effects of side whips on the antenna are simulated by using NEC-WIN and a novel MF/HF ship antenna with side whips is designed First of all, the gain, return loss, and radiation pattern of the antenna on infinite perfect conductor plane are simulated as function of the parameters of the side whip, such as the number, the location, the length of the side whip and the angle with the main whip. After that, the size of the antenna is decided and set up on an experimental ship in Korea Maritime University. The antenna on the ship are simulated and the simulated input impedances are good agreement with the measured results.
