  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) pre-treated by concentrated mixed acid or oxidized at high temperature were melt mixed with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using a twin screw extruder. The morphologies and electrical properties of the MWNT/PMMA composites were investigated. The thermally treated MWNTs (t-MWNTs) were well dispersed, whereas the acid treated MWNTs (a-MWNTs) were highly entangled, forming large-sized clusters. The resulting electrical properties of the composites were analyzed in terms of the carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion. The experimental percolation threshold was estimated to be $3 wt\%$ of t-MWNTs, but no percolation occurred at similar concentrations in the a-MWNT composites, due to the poor dispersion in the matrix.

  • We have prepared polymer composites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ionomers (Surlyn 8940) containing polar segments and metal ions by melt blending with carbon black (CB) as a conductive filler. The resistivity and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of the ionomer/LDPE/CB composites were investigated with respect to the CB content. The ionomer content has an effect on the resistivity and percolation threshold of the polymer composites; the percolation curve exhibits a plateau at low CB content. The PTC intensity of the crosslinked ionomer/LDPE/CB composite decreased slightly at low ionomer content, and increased significantly above a critical concentration of the ionomer. Irradiation-induced crosslinking could increase the PTC intensity and decrease the NTC effect of the polymer composites. The minimum switching current (Ι$\sub$trip/) of the polymer composites decreased with temperature; the ratio of Ι$\sub$trip/ for the ionomer/LDPE/CB composite decreased to a greater extent than that of the LDPE/CB composite. The average temperature coefficient of resistance (${\alpha}$$\sub$T/) for the polymer composites increased in the low-temperature region.

  • A series of manganite-based superlattices composed of half-metallic $La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3/LaMnO_3$ and insulating LaMnO$_3$ stacking layers were fabricated by employing pulsed laser deposition method. The dc resistivity increased drastically by simply reducing the stacking periodicity. The resistivity enhancement was accompanied by a gradual decrease in the temperature (T$_c$) of the Metal-to-Insulator Transition (MIT). This observation was interpreted as a small decrease in the effective metallic fraction near the percolation threshold. For the stacking periodicity less than a certain critical value, there appeared another transition to an insulating state at temperatures far below T$_c$. This low-temperature transition seems to be closely related to the AF-type (C-type) orbital ordering in newly formed insulating domains.

  • In the present work, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (EGN) of 1 ${\mu}m$ in average particle size, which were prepared by heating at $900^{\circ}C$ and then subjected to ultrasonic, ball-milling, and vibratory ball-milling techniques, were uniformly incorporated into phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide (PETI-5) resin. The fracture surface morphology and the electrical resistivity of the EGN/PETI-5 composites were investigated. The results showed that the fracture surfaces and the electrical resistivity strongly depended on the EGN content. The fracture surfaces became more ductile and roughened with increasing EGN and the electrical resistivity was gradually decreased with increased EGN loading, indicating the percolation threshold at 5 wt% EGN.

  • The Ni-MgO composites were prepared by coprecipitation of NiO-MgO solid solutions and their selective reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. We report on the measurements of both ac conductivity $\sigma$ ($\omega$, f) and dielectric constant $textsc{k}$'($\omega$, f) for the Ni-MgO composites in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 MHz at room temperature. The frequency exponents of conductivity and dielectric constant, x and y, are found to be x=0.98$\pm$0.05 and y=0.05$\pm$0.01. These results are in good agreement with a general scaling relation $\chi$-y=1, although these values are different from the theoretical predications. The dielectric constant exponent ($textsc{k}$' f-fc -s) is found to be s=0.62$\pm$0.07 with estimated percolation threshold fc=0.20$\pm$0.02.

  • Electrical conductivity of the oxidized MWNT(Multi walled nanotubes)/polymer composites were investigated with respect to various oxidative conditions of acid concentration, treatment temperature, and treatment time. To remove the impurities existing in MWNT-deposites, liquid-phase oxidation was performed using the $HNO_3/HSO_4$ mixtures. Secondary effects occurred by the oxidation of MWNTs such as the damages of MWNTs and the introduction of functionalities were analyzed through measuring FT-IR, TEM, and zeta potential, All the oxidized NWNTs were functionalized with carboxylic groups and the conditions of oxidation of the MWNTs could have a certain influence on the degree of functionalization, damages, and dispersion of the MWNT. The electrical properties of MWNT composites strongly depend on the oxidative conditions of MWNTs. The conductivity of the composites filled with the proper oxidized MWNT showed the highest percolation threshold.

  • Graphite oxide (GO) was produced using the modified Hummer's method. Poly(p-phenylene sulfide) (PPS)/reduced graphite oxide (RGO) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization method. The electrical conductivity of the PPS/RGO composites was no more than 82 S/m. It was found that as GO content increased in the PPS/RGO composites, the crystallization temperature and electrical conductivity of the composites increased and the percolation threshold value was at 5-8 wt% of GO content.

  • Polyaniline/polystyrene conducting blends were prepared and measured with the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation and the electrcal properties such as surface resistance, electrical conductivity and dielectric loss tangent. The percolation threshold concentration of blends was 5phr of polyaniline and the morphology of blends was setting colser to that of polyaniline at higher concentration. The dielectric loss increased up to $10^5$ at the 50 % of polyaniline and was much influenced by frequency than temperature at higher concentration of polyaniline.

  • To control the electrical properties of a SiC heating element, we sintered $SiC-ZrB_2$composites by using the spark plasma sintering method. The addition of $ZrB_2$ particles with lower electrical conductivity to the SiC matrices with comparatively higher electrical resistivity lowers the electrical resistivities of the composite material. The $ZrB_2$ particles aggregate to form large particles and 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3 networks, i.e., conduction paths. In our study, about $1-{\mu}m$-sized $ZrB_2$ powders start to form the conduction path at about 10 vol.% of addition, namely the threshold volume. The Joule heating experiment shows that 20 vol.% $ZrB_2$-added SiC heating element has outstanding heating efficiency.

  • The monodispersed polystyrene spheres were prepared by emulsion polymerization in aqueous alcohol system. They coated with silver by reduction of silver ion percolated on the surface of them. The spherical hollow type silver has been prepared by dissolving polystyrene with toluene. Epoxy resin compositions with spherical hollow type silver were manufactured, which were composed of a bisphenol F type epoxy resin (RE-304S), amine type hardener (Kayahard AA), and 1-benzyl 2-methyl imidazole (1B2MI) as catalyst. The electrical conductivity with silver content ratio were investigated after cure, the percolation threshold weight ratio for conductance in this epoxy resin system was obtained above the 70 wt% of silver.
