Discrete-time Survival Analysis of Risk Factors for Early Menarche in Korean Schoolgirls

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of body weight status and sleep duration on the discrete-time hazard of menarche in Korean schoolgirls using multiple-point prospective panel data. Methods: The study included 914 girls in the 2010 Korean Children and Youth Panel Study who were in the elementary first-grader panel from 2010 until 2016. We used a Gompertz regression model to estimate the effects of weight status based on age-specific and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) percentile and sleep duration on an early schoolchild's conditional probability of menarche during a given time interval using general health condition and annual household income as covariates. Results: Gompertz regression of time to menarche data collected from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study 2010 suggested that being overweight or sleeping less than the recommended duration was related to an increased hazard of menarche compared to being average weight and sleeping 9 hours to 11 hours, by 1.63 times and 1.38 times, respectively, while other covariates were fixed. In contrast, being underweight was associated with a 66% lower discrete-time hazard of menarche. Conclusions: Weight status based on BMI percentiles and sleep duration in the early school years affect the hazard of menarche.

BEPU analysis of a CANDU LBLOCA RD-14M experiment using RELAP/SCDAPSIM

  • A key element of the safety analysis is Loss of Coolant Analysis (LOCA) which must be performed using system thermal-hydraulic codes. These codes are extensively validated against separate effect and integral experiments. RELAP/SCDAPSIM is one such code that may be used to predict LBLOCA response in a CANDU reactor. The RD-14M experiment selected for the Best Estimate Plus Uncertainty study is a 44 mm (22.7%) inlet header break test with no Emergency Coolant Injection. This work has two objectives first is to simulate pipe break with RELAP and compare these results to those available from experiment and from comparable TRACE calculations. The second objective is to quantify uncertainty in the fuel element sheath (FES) temperature arising from model coefficient as well as input parameter uncertainties using Integrated Uncertainty Analysis package. RELAP calculated results are found to be in good agreement with those of TRACE and with those of experiments. The base case maximum FES temperature is 335.5 ℃ while that of 95% confidence 95th percentile is 407.41 ℃ for the first order Wilk's formula. The experimental measurements fall within the predicted band and the trends and sensitivities are similar to those reported for the TRACE code.

Association of Infant Feeding Characteristics With Dietary Patterns and Obesity in Korean Childhood

  • Objectives: Young children's feeding characteristics can play an important role in eating habits and health during later childhood. This study was conducted to examine the associations of feeding characteristics with dietary patterns and obesity in children. Methods: This study utilized data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2013 and 2017. In total, 802 toddlers were included, with information on their demographic characteristics, feeding practices and duration, and 24-hour recall obtained from their parents. Feeding characteristics were categorized into feeding type, duration of total breastfeeding, duration of total formula feeding, duration of exclusive breastfeeding, and age when starting formula feeding. Dietary patterns were identified based on factor loadings for the food groups for 3 major factors, with "vegetables & traditional," "fish & carbohydrates," and "sweet & fat" patterns. Overweight/obesity was defined as ≥85th percentile in body mass index based on the 2017 Korean National Growth charts for children and adolescents. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine associations between feeding characteristics and dietary patterns. The association between dietary patterns and obesity was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: The early introduction of formula feeding was inversely associated with the "vegetables & traditional" pattern (β=-0.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.34 to -0.02). A higher "vegetables & traditional" intake was associated with a lower risk of obesity (odds ratio, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.95). Conclusions: Feeding characteristics are associated with dietary patterns in later childhood, and dietary patterns were shown to have a potential protective association against obesity.

노인장기요양보험제도에 의한 방문간호사의 역할.업무분석 (Roles of Visiting Nurses Defined Based on Long-Term Care Insurance Regulation for the Elderly)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to define the roles, tasks, and activities of home visiting nurses aimed at enhancing the quality of nursing care under the long-term care insurance regulation for the elderly introduced on July 1, 2008 in Korea. Methods: A review of domestic and foreign literature was used to formulate the proposed roles, tasks, and activities of visiting nurses, which were subsequently modified and complemented by the agreement of home visiting nurse experts and acceptance of 127 nurses. Data was collected from 04 June - 17 September 2008 and analyzed concerning frequency and percentile using SPSS ver. 15.0. Results: The established functions of home visiting nurses were direct nursing service provider, case manager, patient educator, decision maker, care coordinator, and research worker. These functions involved 27 different tasks and 167 activities. Conclusion: The roles, tasks, and activities of visiting nurses, established based upon the guidelines of the Long-term Care Insurance Act for the elderly, were verified for their applicability by nurses involved in home care delivery. These parameters will provide a useful tool in developing an assessment to enhance the quality of home-based care for the elderly in Korea.

영산강 유역의 농업수자원 건전성 및 농업용수 취약성 평가 (Assessment of agricultural water resources healthiness and the water use vulnerability in Yeongsan river basin)

  • 본 연구는 농경지가 주로 분포되어있는 영산강 유역(3,371.4 km2)을 대상으로 농업용수 건전성 및 취약성 평가를 수행하였다. 먼저, 농업용수 건전성은 관개 기간에 농업용수 확보를 위한 유역 환경 요소(하천, 토지이용, 수문, 수질, 수생태, 서식지)로 정의하였으며, 취약성은 용수공급에 영향을 주는 인위적인 변화 요소(기후변화, 불투수층 변화, 농업용수 수요량 변화, 토지피복 변화)로 구분하였다. 각 요소의 sub-index는 1개의 지수로 정규화하여 평가하였으며 Percentile rank 방법으로 계산하였다. 분석결과 영산강 하류의 나주시(5004) 유역의 건전성 및 취약성 지수가 각각 0.33, 0.92로 농업용수 공급에 취약한 것으로 분석되었다. 이에 따른 회복력 및 유지·조치 우선순위 분석결과 또한 농업용 수리시설(저수지, 양수장, 취입보, 집수암거, 관정)을 이용한 농업용수 확보가 시급한 것으로 분석되었다. 최종적으로 본 연구에서 제시한 농업용수 건전성 및 취약성 지수는 장기간에 걸친 유역 변화분석이 가능하고, 농업용수 공급 상황을 예측함으로써 향후 농업용수 확보를 위한 시설물 설치계획 수립에 근거자료로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

주관적 기대가 한국 베이비붐 세대의 자산축적에 미치는 효과 (Retirement-related Subjective Expectations and the Capital Accumulation of the Korean Baby-boom Generation)

  • 본 논문에서는 한국 베이비붐 세대의 미래 사건에 대한 주관적 기대가 자산축적에 미친 효과를 분위회귀분석(quantile regression)을 통해 살펴보았다. 한국고령화패널 1, 2차년도(2006, 2008년) 자료를 이용하여 자산 결정요인을 추정한 결과, 학력, 성별, 자녀수는 어떤 분위에서도 유의한 결정요인이었다. 특히, 학력과 자녀수는 상위 분위로 갈수록 총자산의 격차를 확대시키는 방향으로 증가하였다. 미래 사건에 대한 주관적 기대의 경우, 증여에 대한 기대가 높을수록, 좀 더 긴 수명을 기대할수록, 베이비붐 세대는 좀 더 많은 자산축적을 하고 있는 것으로 추정되었다. 한편 노후 생활에 대한 국가의 보장 정도가 개인의 자산축적을 구축하는 정도는 총자산 하위 분위 보다는 상위 분위에서 증가하였으며, 상위 분위의 효과는 통계적으로도 유의하였다.

Evaluation of Serum Omentin-1, Vaspin, Leptin, Adiponectin Levels in Obese/Overweight Children and Their Relationship With Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

  • To investigate adipokines (vaspin, omentin-1, adiponectin and leptin) and their correlation with hepatosteatosis degree in obese/overweight (O/O) children. We analyzed adipokine levels of 81 children (49 O/O, [body mass index (BMI) > 95th] and 32 non-obese (BMI = 5-85th) admitted to the pediatric outpatient clinic. Serum triglyceride, glucose, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), insulin, HbA1c levels and leptin, omentin-1, vaspin, adiponectin levels were studied. O/O children with hepatosteatosis were divided into grades 1, 2 and 3 according to the degree of hepatosteatosis determined by ultrasonography. While AST (p = 0.001), triglyceride (p = 0.006), BMI percentile (p = 0.000), HOMA index (p = 0.002), systolic blood pressure (p = 0.02), leptin (p = 0.001), omentin-1 (p = 0.001), adiponectin (p = 0.001) levels were higher, vaspin level was lower (p = 0.008) in the (O/O) group compared to the controls. There was a positive correlation between HDL and vaspin, and a negative correlation between HDL and omentin-1 in the O/O group. Also it was observed that as the degree of hepatosteotosis increased, leptin (p = 0.004), omentin-1 (p = 0.001) levels were increased. There was no significant change in vaspin level (p = 0.128). The high levels of omentin-1, leptin and adiponectin have an association with the development of hepatosteatosis in O/O children.

  • 층화확률추출은 모집단을 어떤 층화기준에 의해 여러 층으로 분할한 다음 각 층으로부터 독립적으로 표본을 임의추출하는 방법으로 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있어 실제 조사에서 많이 활용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 대규모 표본조사에서 많이 사용하고 있는 층화확률추출을 사용하여 추출된 표본을 통해 모평균에 대한 붓스트랩 추정량과 신뢰구간 및 가설검정 등 통계적 추론에 대하여 연구하였다. 층화모집단에서의 모평균의 추정량과 관련된 극한 분포이론들을 기초로 붓스트랩 일치성을 근거로 층화 모평균에 대해 표준 붓스트랩 방법, 백분위수 붓스트랩 방법, 스튜던트화 붓스트랩 방법을 활용한 신뢰구간과 붓스트랩 가설검정 방법을 제안하였으며, 모의실험을 통해 신뢰구간 추정 방법들의 유효성을 확인하였다.

Pilot Study of Application Status for the Improvement of Weather Information in the Korean Peninsula: Focus on Extreme Heat Watch and Warnings

  • The extreme heat watch and warnings (EHWW) which is constructed as a part of the climate change adaptation took effect in the summer of 2008, but active response actions failed to be taken because of low perception among citizens. Therefore, a survey investigation targeting citizens residing in Busan and the Gyeongnam province was conducted in order to know the perception regarding EHWW issued by the Korea Meteorological Administration, to identify the main media through which information is acquired, and to propose an improvement measures which may enhance the usefulness and the degree of satisfaction of weather information. The results are as follows; The perception regarding EHWW was not very high as it remained at 59.8% in terms of percentile. Although the statistical significance was not fulfilled in the categories of gender or occupation, significant differences did exist among age groups. The main medium through which citizens acquired information regarding EHWW was the television, which was followed in order by the internet, acquaintances, short message service (SMS), radio, newspapers, the 131 weather hotline, and other media. The usefulness of EHWW was somewhat high (67.2%), and female students were found to utilize the information to a higher degree than male students. The statistics on the level of satisfaction regarding the weather information (65.4%) revealed that most respondents were satisfied. Housewives, professional, and the elder age groups exhibited great satisfaction, leading to the conclusions that the level of perception and interest regarding to the special weather reports (SWR) have an impact on satisfaction of SWR.

A 24-Weeks Toxicity Study of Eryngium foetidum Linn. Leaves in Mice

  • Eryngium foetidum Linn. leaves (EF) are widely used in Thailand and many countries throughout Asia as a culinary seasoning and a traditional medicine. However, adverse effect of high dose consumption in long duration has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate chronic toxicity of EF in mice. Thirty-two ICR male mice were divided into 4 groups of 8 mice each. The mice were fed AIN-76 rodent diet, or AIN-76 rodent diet supplemented with ground freeze-dried EF at 0.8%, 1.6% and 3.2% that is equivalent to approximately 35, 73 and 155 times that of human consumption, respectively, at 97.5 percentile for a period of 24 weeks. At the end of experiment, the mice were euthanized and blood samples were collected for hematological and biochemical evaluations. Necropsy was performed while visceral organs such as lung, liver, kidneys, spleen etc. were collected, weighed and histopathologically examined. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) results of mice in 1.6% and 3.2% EF diet groups were significantly higher than the BUN of control group. No significant difference was noted in other biochemical and hematological properties between the treatment groups and control; all results were within normal range. Histopathology of almost all visceral organs showed no significant changes. However, tubulonephrosis and chronic interstitial nephritis were observed in the groups treated with 1.6% and 3.2% EF diet. Body weight was reduced significantly at week 12 to week 20 when compared to the control group while relative kidney weights were significantly increased. In conclusion, the consumption of EF in diet at high doses illustrated the adverse effect on some biochemical parameters and histopathology in mice. Our findings suggested that EF daily consumption for 24 weeks, at higher doses than the 0.8% EF diet (35 times of human consumption), might cause adverse effect on kidney function in mice.
