  • To obtain the information about the reasons why hulless barley varieties generally have poor germination and emergence rate in the field, hulled and hulless isogenic lines were bred and used. The germination rates of hulless isogenic lines were 4-6 percent lower than those of hulled lines at artificial precipitation treatment, and seriously dropped down at 5 day precipitation treatment. As the thresher rotation speeds up 600 to 1,000 rpm, the differences of germination rate were 10 percent in hulled, but 22 percent in hulless lines. Also emergence rates of hulless lines became seriously low at deep seeding. The emergence rates of hulless isogenic lines became low in the order of deep seeding, high speed thresher, and rain-fall. These results suggest that barley breeders especially for hulless varieties should plan their breeding programs to improve the emergence rate or seedling vigour in the field.

  • This study was conducted to investigate changes in seed vigor based on temperature of dry heat and duration treatment of watermelon seeds and examine the effect on percent of emergence and seedling vigor. When the upper limit temperature of dry heat treatment was raised to 80℃, the percent of the germination decreased. Moreover, T50 was delayed as the upper limit temperature of dry heat treatment increased. The higher the upper limit temperature of dry heat treatment and the longer the treatment period, the higher the percentage of abnormal seedlings. The optimum upper limit temperature for dry heat treatment was 72℃, and the treatment period was five days. Seed vigor was better maintained at 30℃, 45℃, and 52℃, followed by stepwise exposure to high temperatures of 72℃, the upper limit of dry heat treatment, rather than dry heat treatment at a high temperature of 72℃ for 5 days from the initial stage of treatment. When the fungicide was added during the dry heat treatment process, the germination percentage decreased and the percent of the abnormal seedling percentage increased. However, the addition of 10 mg/kg fungicide did not significantly reduce seed vigor.

  • The seeds of Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) were soaked with GA3 50 ppm and primed with CaCl2 at -1.0 MPa for 4days at 23$^{\circ}C$ to identify presoaking and priming regimes that may improve germination in saline condition and with PEG 8000 at high temperature. Presoaked, primed, and untreated seeds were then germinated at 30 and $35^{\circ}C$. NaCl salinity stress consistently decreased the rate of germination of zoysiagrass seed. GA3 or CaCl2 alleviated the inhibitory effect of salinity on germination. However, total percent germination (G) and T50 of untreated control seeds significantly decreased and prolonged at $30^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ as NaCl salinity stress increased. Presoaked seeds with GA3 50 ppm for 4 days at $23^{\circ}C$ had significantly higher germination and lower T50 than untreated or primed with CaCl2 at -1.0 MPa for 4days at $23^{\circ}C$m and overcame the inhibitory effect of germination derived from PEG 8000. In addition, presoaked seed had higher, faster, and more uniform germination than untreated seeds after sowing in growing media in greenhouse.

  • Organic matter in dredged soil has a lot of engineering problem in ground including a large settlement, crack propagation, low bearing capacity and low friction angle. From an agricultural point of view, however, organic matter contributes greatly soil quality and plant health. This paper investigated the relationship between engineering and germination characteristics of stabilized mixture consisting of different ratios of organic content (0 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %) for recycling dredged soil including organic matter. Several series of laboratory tests such as flow test, unconfined compressive test and consolidation test were performed to find out engineering characteristics. pH, percent of germination and growth of plants were also measured to investigate the germination characteristics. The experimental results indicated that, as organic content increased, unconfined compressive stress decreased and compression and swelling indices increased. However, percent of germination and plant growth increases as organic content increases.

  • An expriment was conducted to determine the rate of germination under low temperature and effects of low temperature on seedling of varieties derived from the cross between Indica and Japonica type of rice. Total of 30 varieties including leading variety, Tongil, were germinated at the temperature of $10^{\circ}C$. and $15^{\circ}C$. to determine the rate of germination, and six varieties also including Tongil were planted in pot, and seedlings were exposed to the temperature of $5^{\circ}C$. and $1^{\circ}C$. for 15 days and damage of plant growth due to low temperature was observed. 1. Under the condition of $10^{\circ}C$., varieties such as Iri #323, Suwon #253, Iri #325, Milyang #22, Suwon #251, and Suwon #267 were showing over 70 percent of germination ratio, while varieties, Dodolokiwase, Milyang #23, Yusin, Iri #328, and Iri #329 were below 10 percent in germination ratio. 2. Under the condition of $15^{\circ}C$., variety Suwon #262 was shown 100 percent of germination and varieties such as Milyg an#22, Dodlokiwase, Tongil, Milyang #29, Suwon #258, Milyang #23, Milyang #24, Milyang #28 and Milyang #21 were over 90 percent in germination ratio. However, varieties such as Iri #328, Iri #329, Jinheung, and Minehikari were below 50 percent in germination rate. 3. Considering the germination rate and average days required to germination, Milyang #22 and Iri #323 were highly resistant varieties to low temperature. The rate of germination of varieties from the cross between Indica and Japonica under low temperature was not always lower than that of varieties from Japonica type of rice. 4. Most of the seedlings of varieties used were quite resistant to $1^{\circ}C$. at least for six hours. However, leaves of rice were exposed to the the temperature of $1^{\circ}C$. for 12 hours, and the withered leaves were recovered soon when put in under normal temperature. The degree of leaf withering under low temperature was lower in Milyang #15, Japonica type than in varietieties belonging to $Indica{\times}Japonica$ type of rice. 5. When the seedlings of varieties such as Josaengtongil, Tongil and Yusin were exposed to the temperature of $1^{\circ}C$. for 36 hours, 70 percent of leaves were withered and when the time of expose were doubled, the leaves were completely died. When the temperature was fluctuated, over 75 percent of leaves were died, while 65 percent of leaves of Milyang #15 were died when exposed to $1^{\circ}C$, for 72 hours. 6. Significant growth retardation was observed for all entries when exposed to $1^{\circ}C$. for 24 to 36 hours. The growth retardation was apparently increased as the time of expose was extended.

  • Seedling mechanization of lettuce is known to be difficult due to the small seed size and the irregular seed shape. The purpose of seed pelleting is to make seedling mechanization possible by enlarging the seed size. After that, it can reduce seedling and thinning labours and can also save seeds. According to the results, there were significant differences on the percent germination and day to 50% final germination in accordance with the pelleting polymer. Among the pelleting polymer, gemination of seeds using polynimyl alcohol (PVA) was generally smooth, and followed by polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), methyl cellulose (MC), and wteen 80. The germination rate was also different according to the pelleting particulate matters. Generally, percent germination and speed of seed using the mixture of diatomaceous earth, talc and calcium carbonate were higher and faster than using other polleting materials, respectively. Thus, it should be suitable pelleting particulate matter for the pelleting of lettuce seeds. On the other hands germination of seeds using limestone, calcium oxide and benonite were low. The seed size of lettuce after pelleting was 33 times as large as the raw seed size. During the process of seed pelleting, netrient addition induced the decrement on the germination and the delay of germination speed. Also, there was differences in the germinability of pelleted seeds in accordance with the addition of nutrient sources. MS medium was generally lower than monosodium phosphate in inhibition of seed germination. Germination of pelleted seeds after priming was higher than the seeds without the treatment, and also showed the trend of early germination.

  • To clarify the seed germination characteristics among cultivated Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea, we studied the germination percent and germination energy of 162 accessions (102 cultivated var. frutescens, 41 weedy var. frutescens, and 19 weedy var. crispa) in both conditions of $4^{\circ}C$ low temperature treatment and non-cold treatment. In our study, most accessions of cultivated var. frutescens showed more than 50% in both germination percent and germination energy in both cold and non-cold treatment conditions. Whereas, most accessions of weedy var. frutescens and weedy var. crispa showed lower than 50% in both germination percent and germination energy in both cold and non-cold treatment. In addition, most accessions of Perilla crop and their weedy types showed much higher germination percent and germination energy in $4^{\circ}C$ low temperature treatment condition compared to the seeds under non-cold treatment condition. The information provided in this research may help for our understanding the variation of seed germination characteristics among accessions of cultivated Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of some plant growth regulators on the germination and seedling growth of Wasabia japonica Matsum seeds. The seeds were soaked in different concentration of indolacetic acid(LAA), indolbutyric acid(IBA), $GA_3\;GA_4$, Benzyladenine(BA) and kinetin, and the germination percent, the average germination day and the growth of seedlings were measured. The seeds were released from dormancy and the germination percent was considerably increased when the seedcoat was removed. $GA_3,\;GA_4,$ BA and kinetin were effective in breaking the dormancy, but LAA and IBA were not effective. $GA_4$, BA and kinetin were more effective in accelerating germination of dormancy seed than $GA_3$. The applications of BA combined with $GA_3$ l00ppm showed higher germination percent than that of BA alone within the range 50ppm and 100ppm. Root, hypocotyl and petiol of seedling overgrew by the application of $GA_3\;and\;GA_4$. But effects of BA and kinetin were good on seedling growth compared with those of $GA_3\;and\;GA_4$. Therefore, BA and kinetin could be use for dormancy breaking of seed instead of $GA_3$.

  • Present studies were performed to determine the physiology of seed germination in Viola species native to Korea. Twelve species, 1 variety and 1 form were collected, classified and used as materials: V. collina, V. blandaefomis, V. rosii, V. chaerophylloides, V. phalacrocarpa, V. patrinii, V. mandshurica, V. mandshurica for. albescence, V. seoulensis, V. yedoensis, V. keiskei, V. variegata, V. variegata var. chinensis, and V. verecunda. V. tricolor 'Helen Mount' was also used to compare wild with cultivated species. In order to investigate the effect of temperature on seed germination, seeds stored at $4{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 10 months or 4 years were incubated at 10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$ under 16h illumination with 4 replicates per treatment. Seeds which had not germinated at $10^{\circ}C$ were transferred to $30^{\circ}C$ to assess the effect of temperature change in germination. Germination percent and the days of first, 40% and 80% germination were assessed. Capability of seed germination varied with taxon; Species belonging to subsection Patellares had high ability of germination, compared to species in the other subsections, and series Chinensis was the best among subsection Patellares. Species capable of high germination germinated in all temperatures with reasonably high germination rate, but the other species responded sensitively to temperature with different germination patterns. Higher the temperature, shorter the incubation time required for first, 40% and 80% of germination. Therefore, high temperature was effective in almost all species, not only for inducing high rate of germination but also the uniformity of germination. Temperature change from $10^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$ had a positive effect on seed germination.

  • To understand the seed characteristics among cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea and Japan, we studied the variation of 69 accessions by examining weight of 100 seeds, hardness of seed, germination percent and germination energy. The survey of the weight of 100 seeds and hardness of seed, clarified as follows; cultivated type of var. frutescens showed a range of 0.177 to 0.402 g with weight of 100 seeds, and most accessions of cultivated type of var. frutescens have soft seeds, except for several accessions, which have hard seeds, whereas weedy type of var. frutescens showed a range of 0.045 to 0.172 g with weight of 100 seeds, and has only hard seeds. While cultivated type of var. crispa showed a range of 0.054 to 0.101 g with weight of 100 seeds, and has only hard seeds. The weedy type of var. crispa showed a range of 0.059 to 0.135 g with weight of 100 seeds, and has only hard seeds. According to the result of germination tests, although the most accessions of cultivated and weedy types of var. frutescens and cultivated and weedy types of var. crispa showed below 50% germination rate at the first germination test, but some accessions of cultivated type of var. frutescens showed above 50% germination. While, in the second or third germination tests, most accessions of cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types showed above 50% germination rates, except for several accessions. As a result, in this study, the average of germination percent and germination energy among accessions of cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types showed respectively the highest value at the third germination test, but showed the lowest value at the first germination test. In addition, the germination percent and germination energy showed much higher in the room temperature condition than in $28^{\circ}C$ constant-temperature condition. Although our results may be required much clearly survey in the further study, this current results will be help for our understanding the variation of seed characteristics among cultivated types of Perilla crop and their weedy types in Korea and Japan.
