The plate loading test(PLT) and the field density test are mainly used on the construction of embankments to control the compaction of a limited layer thickness. These two test methods are very time consuming and inefficient, but they are still commonly used as the methods of quality control for soil compaction. In the last 3 decades, many devices such as geogauge, light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD) and dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP) etc., have been introduced into the engineering market with the objective of acquiring in situ stiffness properties of the compacted soil layers. Recently, a new type of sensor, called compactometer, which in mounted on the drum of a roller and measures impact forces continuously with GPS, called as Continuous Compaction Control(CCC), has come into use in many countries such as America, Germany, Japan and so on. The main objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of these new devices as quality control and assurance devices for compacted soil layers. Based on this study, compactometer and the LFWD results werestrongly correlated with the result obtained from the PLT and the field density test.
A condition evaluation procedure for the pavement foundations using multi-load level Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD) deflections is presented in this paper. A dynamic finite element program incorporating a stress-dependent material model, was used to generate the synthetic deflection database. Based on this synthetic database, the relationships between surface deflections and critical responses, such as stresses and strains in base and subgrade layers, have been established. FWD deflection data, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer(UP) data, and repeated load resilient modulus testing results used in developing this procedure were collected from the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) database. Research effort focused on investigation of the effect of the FWD load level on the condition evaluation procedures. The results indicate that the proposed procedure can estimate the pavement foundation conditions. It is also found that structurally adjusted Base Damage Index (BDI) and Base Curvature Index (BCI) are good indicators for the prediction of stiffness characteristics of aggregate base and subgrade respectively. A FWD test with a load of 66.7 kN or less does not improve the accuracy of this procedure. Results from the study for the nonlinear behavior of a pavement foundations indicate that the deflection ratio obtained from multi-load level deflections can predict the type and quality of the pavement foundation materials.

This paper is to develop the method of surface soil improvement by electric heating equipment. For this purpose, the electric heating systems were invented to apply to the in-situ soil. Iaboratory tests were done to study the behaviors of sea clays by eletric heating. In lab tests, two different heating temperatures, $70^{\circ}C$ and $110^{\circ}C$, were applied to the saturated clays to examine the relationship between evaporation and compaction. In addition, trafficability was analyzed to the heated by applying cone penetrometer to the heated clays Furthermore, in-situ tests were conducted to analyze the range of soil improvement and strength variations. The temperature changes in field were measured and they were compared with those of the commercial program (Temp/W). Also, the bearing capacities of electrically heated field were tested by PBT (plate bearing test). Several conclusions were derived from the results of the numerical analysis and tests (lab and field). The improvement ranges and strength variations of electrically heated soil depended on the heating temperature and time. If the heating temperature is more than $100^{\circ}C$ evaporating the ground water, the bearing capacity and settlement increased rapidly. The bearing capacities of in-situ soil increased more than 3 times, and heated soil emitted a lot of vapors. The soil around electric heater was sintered completely, and its range was almost 20 cm.
Changes in salinity, hydraulic conductivity and penetration resistance in a reclaimed tidal land reclaimed in 1986 were studied. The salinity monitoring based on electrical conductivity of saturated extract, ECe, was conducted from 1994, when the land use for experimental crop production started after tile drainage. The site was abandoned since 1999. The hydraulic conductivity was measured by a sand fill auger hole method, and the resistance was measured with a dynamic penetrometer in situ. The averaged ECe in 1994 was $33.7dS\;m^{-1}$ ranging from 25.5 to $44.8dS\;m^{-1}$, and was decreased to $25.7dS\;m^{-1}$ with large range from 0.8 to $70.3dS\;m^{-1}$ before experiment was $1.89{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$. It increased to $1.32{\times}10^6m\;s^{-1}$ in the top 20-cm soil with large variability, while it showed $3.44{\times}10^7m\;s^{-1}$ beneath the 20-cm soil depth with less variability. The penetration resistance of the soil ranged from 0.05 to 9.99MPa. The vertical distribution of penetration resistance indicated the hardened layer was developed at the depth of 20~40 cm where the hydraulic conductivity was sharply decreased.

As the measurement of strain-gage type cone penetrometer is influenced by the temperature change during penetration, the temperature is a factor producing an error of the cone tip resistance. In this study, the 0.5 mm diameter temperature transducer and 7 mm diameter micro cone penetrometer are manufactured by using FBG sensors to evaluate the effect of temperature on the cone tip resistance. Design concepts include the cone configuration, sensor installation and the temperature compensation process. The test shows that the tip resistance measured by strain gauge is affected by the temperature change. The error of the tip resistance increases with an increase in temperature change, while the temperature effect on the tip resistance of FBG cone is effectively compensated by using FBG temperature transducer. Temperature compensated tip resistance of the strain gauge cone shows the good matched profile with FBG cone which performs real-time temperature compensation during penetration. This study demonstrates that the temperature compensation by using FBG sensor is an effective method to produce the more reliable cone tip resistance.

The penetration of the probe produces the excess pore pressure due to the disturbance. The objective of this study is to evaluate the disturbance zone by using the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure, which was generated due to the penetration of the penetrometer with different size. The CPT, DMT and FVP (Field Velocity Probe) are adopted for in-situ tests. The tests are carried out in the construction site of north container pier of Busan new port, Korea where is accelerating the consolidation settlement using plastic board drains (PBD) and surcharges by crushed gravels. The coefficient of consolidation $(C_h)$ and soil properties are deduced by the laboratory test. The in-site tests are performed after the predrilling the surcharge zone at the point of 90% degree of consolidation. To minimize the penetration effect, the horizontal distance between penetration tests is 3m, the change of the pore pressure is monitored at the fixed depth of 24m. The coefficient of consolidation $(C_h)$ and the $t_{50}s$ are calculated based on the laboratory test and the in-situ data, respectively. The equvalent radi based on the $t_{50}$ shows that the FVP and the DMT produce the smallest and the greatest equivalent radi, respectively.
Physical Properties of Jeungpyun product were analyzed during fermentation in the ranges of 0 to 10 hours. Penetration value of Jeungpyun sample measured by penetrometer was increased greatly according to the development of fermentation time, recording maximum value, 135 at 7 hours. Specific volume and total pore ratio were also increased greatly in course of fermentation time, recording maximum value, 3.5 ㎤/g-dry matter and 54.9% at fermentation time, 6 hours and 4 hours respectively while they were decreased since then. Some remaining peaks on X-ray diffractogram were seen in all the Jeungpyun samples. Micropores and macropores were observed on cross-sectional view of all the fermented Jeungpyun samples.

The addition of green tea to kimchi making for extanding the optimum edible period was studied. The equality and sensory characteristics of green tea added kimchi were evaluated. The acidity, lactic acid and acetic acid contents of green tea added kimchi showed lower than that of control kimchi but reducing sugar and vitamin C contents was higher. The duration of optimum edible periods of green tea added kimchi lasted two more weeks. While the optimum pH of kimchi for eating lasted, the sensory pannel score for sour taste of green tea added kimchi was lower than that of control but the scores for overall quality and hardness were higher. Especially, the sour taste score between two groups were significantly different(p<0.05). There was no differences in texture determined by Penetrometer between green tea added kimchi and control kimchi until the fermentation reached the optimal condition for eating. After that period, the degree of degradation of texture was much delayed in green tea added kimchi.
Precision agriculture aims to minimize costs and environmental damage caused by agriculture and to maximize crop yield and profitability, based on information collected at within-field locations. In this process, quantification of soil physical properties, including soil strength, would be useful. To quantify and manage variability in soil strength, there is need for a strength sensor that can take measurements continuously while traveling across the field. In this paper, preliminary analyses were conducted using two datasets available with current technology, (1) cone penetrometer readings collected at different compaction levels and for different soil textures and (2) tillage draft (TD) collected from an entire field. The objective was to provide information useful for design of an on-the-go soil strength profile sensor and for interpretation of sensor test results. Analysis of cone index (CI) profiles led to the selection of a 0.5-m design sensing depth, 10-MPa maximum expected soil strength, and 0.1-MPa sensing resolution. Compaction level, depth, texture, and water content of the soil all affected CI. The effects of these interacting factors on data obtained with the soil strength sensor should be investigated through experiments. Spatial analyses of CI and TD indicated that the on-the-go soil strength sensor should acquire high spatial-resolution, high-frequency ($\ge$ 4 Hz) measurements to capture within-field spatial variability.

Measurement of electrical resistivity in soils has been used for many years with purpose of estimating in situ porosity or density. Recently electrical resistivity has also been used as an indicator of soil contaimination. This paper presents the result of laboratory experiment to investigate the resistivity variation in contaminated sandy soils. The results can be used with the Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT) result to analyse ground condition. In the experiment, the water content and leachate concentration of soils were controlled by groundwater and leachate, and then the resistivity measurement was made with 'STING-R1' by Advanced Geosciences Inc. In the case of using groundwater, the resistivity was in the range of over 1000${\omega}{\cdot}m$, but in the case of using polluted water by leachate, the resistivity decreased significantly down to 10~ 100${\omega}{\cdot}m$ for the same moisture content. Also the resistivity varied according to the degree of saturatrion. Therefore, if soil is contaminated by leachate, the CPT with electrical resistivity sensor might be used to investigate the contamination status and plume migration. But exact component of leachate and the pollutant concentration are still hard to identify.
