Cone penetrometer incorporated with dynamic cone penetration method for investigation of track substructures

  • The increased speed of a train causes increased loads that act on the track substructures. To ensure the safety of the track substructures, proper maintenance and repair are necessary based on an accurate characterization of strength and stiffness. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a cone penetrometer incorporated with the dynamic cone penetration method (CPD) for investigating track substructures. The CPD consists of an outer rod for dynamic penetration in the ballast layer and an inner rod with load cells for static penetration in the subgrade. Additionally, an energy-monitoring module composed of strain gauges and an accelerometer is connected to the head of the outer rod to measure the dynamic responses during the dynamic penetration. Moreover, eight strain gauges are installed in the load cells for static penetration to measure the cone tip resistance and the friction resistance during static penetration. To investigate the applicability of the developed CPD, laboratory and field tests are performed. The results of the CPD tests, i.e., profiles of the corrected dynamic cone penetration index (CDI), profiles of the cone tip and friction resistances, and the friction ratio are obtained at high resolution. Moreover, the maximum shear modulus of the subgrade is estimated using the relationships between the static penetration resistances and the maximum shear modulus obtained from the laboratory tests. This study suggests that the CPD test may be a useful method for the characterization of track substructures.

Performance Test of a Real-Time Measurement System for Horizontal Soil Strength in the Field

  • Purpose: Soil strength has been measured using a cone penetrometer, which is making it difficult to obtain the spatial data required for precision agriculture. Our objectives were to evaluate real-time horizontal soil strength (RHSS) to measure soil strength in real time while moving across the field. Using the RHSS data, the tillage depth was determined, and the power consumption of a tractor and rotavators were compared. Methods: The horizontal soil-strength index (HSSI) obtained by the RHSS was compared with the cone index (CI), which was measured using a cone penetrometer. Comparison analysis in accordance with the measurement depth that increased at 5-cm interval was conducted using kriged maps at six sensing depths. For tillage control and evaluation of the power consumption, the system was installed with a potentiometer for tillage depth, a torque sensor from the rear axle, and a power take-off (PTO) shaft. Results: The HSSI was lower than the CI, but they were the same at 54.81% of the total grids for the 5-cm depth and at 3.85% for the 10-cm depth. In accordance with the recommended tillage map, tillage operations between 0 and 15 cm left 2.3% and 7% residue cover on the soil, and that between 20 and 10 cm covered a wider utilization of 3% and 18.4%, respectively. When the tillage depth was 15 cm, the comparison result of the power requirements between the PTO and rear axle in terms of control performance revealed that the maximum power requirements of the axle and PTO were 44.63 and 23.24 kW, respectively. Conclusions: An HSSI measurement system was evaluated by comparison with the conventional soil strength measurement system (CI) and applied to a tractor to compare the tillage power consumption. Further study is needed on its application to various farm works using a tractor for precision agriculture.

  • 비탈면의 유실, 붕락사고 등 비탈면에 대한 안정성을 파악하기 위해서 지층의 구성상태, 역학적 특성 등의 지반정보 파악이 필요하다. 이러한 지반정보를 파악하기 위해서 일반적으로 표준관입시험(SPT) 및 콘 관입시험 등이 널리 이용되고 있다. 대부분이 급경사로 이루어지고 진입로가 없는 비탈면에 대한 접근성 문제로 표준관입시험이 널리 활용되지 못하고 있다. 이러한 단점을 보완할 수 있는 있는 휴대용 장비인 Drop Cone Penetrometer(DCP)를 이용한 조사도 여러 가지 문제로 제한적으로 사용되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 비탈면 현장접근이 용이한 휴대용 시추기와 동적콘관입시험 모듈을 개발하고, 개발된 동적콘관입시험기를 이용한 결과와 동일 현장에서 수행한 표준관입시험값과 상관성을 분석하였다. 에너지전단율로 보정된 동적콘관입시험과 표준관입시험간의 상관식은 Nd' = 3.13 N'으로 나타났다.

해수를 사용한 MICP 기술의 연안 지반 개량시 발생하는 특성 분석 (Characteristic of Coastal Soil Improvement by MICP Technology Using Sea Water)

  • 최근 지구온난화 등으로 인하여 지구의 평균해수면이 상승하는 추세이다. 삼면이 바다인 국내의 경우 연안침식이 초래되어 국토 손실 및 연안의 위험성을 높일 가능성이 있다. 미생물에 의한 탄산칼슘 형성(MICP) 기술은 미생물에 의한 탄산칼슘침강 기술이며, 지반의 강성과 강도를 증진시키는 친환경적 방법이다. 본 연구에서는 연안 침식 저감을 위하여 MICP 기술을 제안하였다. 연안 조건을 고려하여 용매로 해수를 사용하고 탈염수와 그 성능을 비교하였다. 탈염수와 해수 조건하에서 미생물에 의한 요소분해능을 조사하였다. 소일칼럼을 제작하여 MICP 처리된 모래의 강도 평가를 실시하였다. MICP 처리는 표면살포법에 의해 처리되었는데, 이러한 방식은 기존의 혼합 방식과 달라 전통적인 강도 평가 방식은 적절하지 않음을 확인하였다. 미세 구조 분석을 통해 다른 용매가 사용된 경우의 광물적 변화를 관측하였다. 실험 결과, 해수는 미생물에 의한 요소분해 반응을 느리게 만드는 것을 확인하였다. 표면 경화된 모래는 침관입시험을 통해 효과적으로 평가할 수 있었다. 이 연구에서는 해수를 용매로 사용하여도 탈염수 수준으로 충분히 MICP 기술 적용이 가능함을 확인하였다.

  • 전기비저항콘은 현장에서 지반의 오염대를 조사하는데 상대적으로 경제적인 비용으로 적용될 수 있다. 그러나, 전기비저항 결과만에 의한 해석은 정량적 데이터베이스의 부족과 함수비 등의 다른 지반공학적 영향인자들에 의해 모호한 결과를 나타낼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 지반오염조사에서의 전기비저항 측정기법을 보완하기 위하여 정전용량 측정기법을 도입하여 중금속과 유류로 오염된 지반에서의 적용성을 평가하고자 하였다. 함수비와 오염물질의 종류에 따른 전기비저항과 정전용량의 변화를 평가하기 위하여 실내모형시험을 수행하였으며, 그 결과 전기비저항과 유전상수를 통시에 측정하여 분석함으로써 오염대의 감지에 신뢰도를 높일 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 전기비저항과 정전용량 측정기법은 중금속으로 오염된 포화지반과 지하수대 상부에 존재하는 디젤유 오염층을 감지하는 데 적용성이 높은 것으로 나타났다.

갓의 김치가 김치의 품질과 관능적 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Mustard Leaf on Quality and Sensory Characteristics of Kimchi)

  • The addition of mustard leaf to kimchi making for extanding the optimum edible period was studied. The quality and sensory characteristics of mustard leaf added kimchi were evaluated . The activity, lactic and acetic acid contents of mustard leaf added kimchi showed lower than that of control kimchi but reducing sugar and vitamin C contents was higher. The duration of optimum edible periods of mustard leaf added kimchi lasted one more weak. While the optimum pH of kimchi for eating lasted, the sensory pannel score for sour taste of mustard leaf added kimchi was lower than that of control but the scoreas for savory taste, carbonated taste and hardness were higher . Especially , the sour taste score between two groups were significantly different (p<0.05). Overall quality score for the mustard leaf added kimchi was higher. There was no differences in texture determined by Penetrometer between mustard leaf added kimchi and control kimchi until the fermentation reached the optimal condition for eating . After that period , the degree of degradation of texture was much delayed in mustard leaf added kimchi.

  • The concepts of mounting a pressuremeter module behind a cone penetrometer was applied in the early 1980s. The pressuremeter module is of 40mm diameter with length / diameter ratio of 10 inflated by nitrogen gas. This cone pressuremeter(CPM) is used to obtain the ground characteristics consisted of mainly silty, clay and sand. Field tests such as SPT, PMT, Vane tests are also carried out to understand the ground condition. Undisturbed samples are obtained to carried out Lah tests. The results of these field and lab tests are presented, discussed in detail, and compared with each others.

Alternative Cone Tip Resistance Analysis Method using Rescaled Range Analysis

  • In this study, R/S analysis which was proposed by Mandelbrot & Wallis (1969) was applied to evaluate the presence of the fractal property in the cone tip resistance of in-situ CPT data. Hurst exponents (H) were evaluated in the range of 0.660$\sim$0.990 and the average was 0.875. It was confirmed that a cone tip resistance data had the characteristic of fractals and it was expected that cone tip resistance data sets are well approximated by a fBm process with an Hurst exponent near 0.875. It was also observed that the boundary between layers were obviously identified as a result of R/S analysis and it will be usage in practices.

  • Parametric studies based on laboratory pilot tests were performed to investigate the relationships between electrical resistivity and contaminated soil properties. Three kinds of sandy soils sampled and leachates from a industrial waste landfill were mixed to model the contaminated soils. Electrical resistivity of soils were measured by using a simulated resistivity cone penetrometer probe. In the experiments, the electrical resistivity were observed with changing the water content, void ratio, unit weight, degree of saturation, and concentration of the leachate. The test results show that the electrical resistivity of soils depends largely on the water content and the electrical property of pore water rather than unit weight and types of soils.

  • 국내 건설현장에서는 성토다짐의 다짐도 확인을 위해 주로 평판재하시험(PBT)을 사용한다. 평판재하시험은 재하시험시 표층의 매우 잘 다져진 곳에 대한 지지력 계수를 획득 하여 실다짐도를 과대 평가하는 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 이에 착안하여 응력도달 범위가 작은 평판재하시험을 지양하고 콘관입시험으로부터 획득되는 노상의 관입지수로부터 지반의 다짐도를 추정할 수 있는 콘관입시험기와 구동시스템 및 해석 프로그램을 개발하였다. 개발된 시스템은 다짐차량에 간편하게 부착하여 현장에서 직접 다짐도를 획득할 수 있으며 다짐도와 더불어 다져진 지반의 전단강도정수를 동시에 측정할 수 있다.
