  • Performance for the resistant to chlorides penetration is required in order to increase durability of seaside construction. For this reason, it is important to acquire simultaneously watertightness, resistance for crack of concrete and chemical fixation effect of chloride in it. In this study, High durability promoting agents(HD) consist of inorganic salt and active components were applied to enhancing resistance for chloride ion penetration against concrete based on mix(composition of binder : OPC+SLG) of seaside construction. Tang's experimental method was utilized to investigate the resistances of chloride ion penetration of concrete such as chloride ion diffusion coefficient and penetration depth. It was confirmed that resistance of chloride ion penetration of concrete by 0.6% addition of HD was improved to $11.3^{\sim}20.5$% than non-added concrete.

  • Changes in substructure conditions, such as ballast fouling and subgrade settlement may cause the railway quality deterioration, including the differential geometry of the rails. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a hybrid cone penetrometer (HCP) to characterize the railway substructure. The HCP consists of an outer rod and an inner mini cone, which can dynamically and statically penetrate the ballast and the subgrade, respectively. An accelerometer and four strain gauges are installed at the head of the outer rod and four strain gauges are attached at the tip of the inner mini cone. In the ballast, the outer rod provides a dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the corrected DCPI (CDCPI) with the energy transferred into the rod head. Then, the inner mini cone is pushed to estimate the strength of the subgrade from the cone tip resistance. Laboratory application tests are performed on the specimen, which is prepared with gravel and sandy soil. In addition, the HCP is applied in the field and compared with the standard dynamic cone penetration test. The results from the laboratory and the field tests show that the cone tip resistance is inversely proportional to the CDCPI. Furthermore, in the subgrade, the HCP produces a high-resolution profile of the cone tip resistance and a profile of the CDCPI in the ballast. This study suggests that the dynamic and static penetration tests using the HCP may be useful for characterizing the railway substructure.

  • Concrete structures are commonly exposed to freezing-thawing condition. This freezing-thawing action changes the pore structure of concrete, and it can reduce the durability of concrete. In this study, the change of the internal pore structure and durability of concrete due to freezing-thawing action are investigated. According to results, the excellent durability records were reported by the existing evaluation methods for all mixes. However, the pores, 50~100nm size in diameter, are increased in concrete specimens exposed to freezing-thawing action, and the chloride penetration resistance was significantly reduced. The linear relationship between pore structure and chloride penetration resistance was shown in water cured concrete. Meanwhile, the linear relationship was decreased when concrete is exposed to freezing-thawing condition. It is desirable to review the criterion of durability evaluation for concrete specimens exposed to freezing-fthawing and chloride attack condition, simultaneously.

  • Suction bucket foundation is installed with the differential pressure created by pumping water out of bucket. Bucket foundation has usually been utilized in mooring anchor for offshore platform or floating oil and gas production facilities in the open sea. After suction bucket foundation successfully was applied as the foundation for offshore wind turbines in Europe, it recently attracts much attention in Korea, too. To estimate the penetration resistance of the suction bucket foundation is one of the important matters that should be considered during its installation. This study carried out a series of model tests to investigate the penetration resistance of suction bucket foundation. And the mobilized soil strength factor was reviewed through comparing the experimental results by two installation ways (e.g., push-in-load and suction) and the results calculated by the conventional equation.

  • Economic damage is occurring due to landslides and debris flows that occur when the ground artificially created for roads or photovoltaic power generation facilities is weakened by rainfall such as torrential rain. In order to understand the stability of the artificially created ground, it is very important to check the ground information such as the compositional state and mechanical characteristics of the stratum. However, since most of the investigation sites are steep slopes or there are no access roads, it is not easy to enter the drilling equipment commonly used to check ground information and perform standard penetration tests. In this study, a dynamic cone penetration test (DCP) device using a miniaturized auger drilling equipment and an automatic drop device was developed to check the cone resistance value and the dynamic cone penetration test value and analyze the correlation with the standard penetration test value to confirm its applicability at the mountain solar power generation site. As a result, the cone resistance value is qd = 0.46 N and the dynamic cone penetration test value is Nd = 1.58 N, confirming a value similar to the results of existing researchers to secure its reliability.

  • Changes in salinity, hydraulic conductivity and penetration resistance in a reclaimed tidal land reclaimed in 1986 were studied. The salinity monitoring based on electrical conductivity of saturated extract, ECe, was conducted from 1994, when the land use for experimental crop production started after tile drainage. The site was abandoned since 1999. The hydraulic conductivity was measured by a sand fill auger hole method, and the resistance was measured with a dynamic penetrometer in situ. The averaged ECe in 1994 was $33.7dS\;m^{-1}$ ranging from 25.5 to $44.8dS\;m^{-1}$, and was decreased to $25.7dS\;m^{-1}$ with large range from 0.8 to $70.3dS\;m^{-1}$ before experiment was $1.89{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$. It increased to $1.32{\times}10^6m\;s^{-1}$ in the top 20-cm soil with large variability, while it showed $3.44{\times}10^7m\;s^{-1}$ beneath the 20-cm soil depth with less variability. The penetration resistance of the soil ranged from 0.05 to 9.99MPa. The vertical distribution of penetration resistance indicated the hardened layer was developed at the depth of 20~40 cm where the hydraulic conductivity was sharply decreased.

  • In this study, Estimate solutions of ultimate lateral resistances for lateral loaded piles are proposed using cone penetration values, $q_c$ values, as CPT results. Cone penetration values, $q_c$ values measured on clean sand layers, are represented by factors for relative densities, axial stresses, and lateral stresses which are important on analysis of sandy soil layers. Also, these factors are same factors to consider existed estimations of ultimate lateral capacity. In this study, estimation of ultimate lateral capacity for lateral loaded piles using CPT results is proposed, and this estimation is verified by adequate analysis for effective reliability.

  • Recently, high-performance composite materials have been used for various industrial fields because of their superior high strength, high stiffness and lower weight. In this study, manufactured fiber reinforced metal laminate materials are composed of two parts. One is hard-anodized A15083-O alloy as a face material and the other is high strength aramid fiber (Twaron CT709) and polyethylene fiber(Dyneema HB25) laminates as a back-up material. Resistance to penetration is determined by protection ballistic limit(V$\sub$50/, a static velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration) test method. V$\sub$50/ tests with 0$^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with 5.56mm ball projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during high velocity impact tests.

  • The test fit has commonly used for the evaluation of the railbed condition, and indirect methods by using the compressional wave are also studied. the direct evaluation method by penetration test has not been studied. For the measurement of in-situ cone tip resistance of the railbed with minimizing the disturbance of the upper railbed. the cone penetrometer with the helical type outer rod(CPH) was developed. The outer rod, which has helical screw, is penetrated through the gravel layer and provides the reaction force for cone penetration testing. the cone tip resistances are measured by the mini cone penetrometer, where diameter is 15mm. For the developing the mini cone, strain gauge installation, circuit configuration, penetration rates and calibration process are considered. For the easy penetration of the screw rod in the field, the reaction force stepping plate and guide column are arranged. The screw rod are penetrated through the gravel layer. And the mini cone was pushed into the subgrade railbed at the penetration rate of 1mm/sec. The penetration test shows that the cone tip resistance increases along the depth. In addition, the subgrade condition is evaluated. This study demonstrates that the CPH may be effectively used for the evaluation of subgrade method any damage of the gravel layer.
