  • In this study, effect of nitrogen volume in the shielding gas of Ar-$N_2$ mixing gas on the bead shape, hardness and microstructure of GTA welds of 3mm thick Commercial Pure Ti was investigated. As the nitrogen volume increased, the welding current for full penetration was reduced and hardness in the fusion zone significantly increased compared with that of the base metal, but there is no difference in the hardness of HAZ. Microstructure in the fusion zone with pure Ar gas changed from equiaxed alpha of the base metal to serrated alpha. On the other hand, microstructure using Ar-$N_2$ mixing gas changed to acicular alpha. With the increasing of nitrogen content, the amount of acicular alpha increased and the size of that was fine.

  • The current establishment of city gas piping polyethylene (PE) tube used as bonding state or part of the health or safety of fusion is very important. A part of these fusion methods to determine the soundness of the short-term trials and long-term tests can be largely classified. Typical tests include short-term strength, tensile strength, impact strength, compressive strength, resiliency and compression. Polyethylene (PE) pipes installed in the domestic terms of overall penetration rate of 45% has been used. However, polyethylene (PE) pipes have reliability problems, and these occurs mostly in part by defective welding. Therefore, the test is necessary for safety. Non-destructive methods (ultrasonic testing) are difficult to be used. Therefore, Polypropylene copolymer (PP-C), polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H), and polyethylene (PE) pipe are used. Fusion of these materials is necessary in these field however, its technical, and basic research has not been studied well. In this research, short-term strength of welding parts, its tensile strength, hardness, fatigue, and microstructure have been analyzed to find the optimum process conditions to improve mechanical properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the wear resistance and hardness of Al alloy by making a formation of the thick surface hardening layers. The thick surface hardening layers were formed by PTAW(Plasma Transferred Arc Welding), with the addition of metal powders (Cu), ceramics powders (NbC, TiC), and mixture powders (Cu+NbC) in Al alloy (A1050, A5083). Mechanical properties of overlaid layers (wear resistance, hardness) were investigated in relation to the microstructure. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The depth of penetration was increased with increasing powder feeding rate. It is considered that these increase were due to the thermal pinch effect by the addition of powders, especially, for the Cu powders, were due to the heat of reaction with the matrix. The hardness and wear resistance of overlaid layers were improved with increasing powder feeding rate. For the Cu powders, it is considered that these increase were due to the increase of the formation of ${\theta}(CuAl_2)$ phase with increasing feeding rate of Cu powers.

  • As number of the buildings increases, it shows new trends such as twisted, tilted, taperer shape. As a structural solution for the new trend buildings, diagonal grid (Diagrid) structure was developed. Though a few buildings was built using diagird system, the structural performance of the corresponding node was not clearly identified. Therefore, experimental evaluation is needed to apply diagrid for higher buildings. In this study, the node was tested depending on the amounts of welding materials. As a result, the partial welding can provide enough strength for the node as required in the full penetration welding under monotonin compressive loadings.

  • GTAW of titanium using flux cored wire was exploited. Flux cored wire with MgF$_2$ resulted in 60% deeper penetration than conventional active GTAW which applys fluxes in the form of paste. Emission spectroscopy of the arc with MgF$_2$ showed Ti II peak, indicating higher temperature arc. Elux cored wire formed weld metal with reasonably low oxygen content.

  • Cleaning effect is well known mechanism of oxide layer removal in DCEP polarity. It is also known that DCEN has higher heat input efficiency than DCEP in GTAW process. Based on these two renowned arc theories, conventional variable polarity arc for aluminum welding was set up to have minimum DCEP and maximum DCEN duty ratio to achieve the highest heat input efficiency and weldability increase. However, recent several variable polarity GTA research papers reported unexpected result of proportional relationship between DCEP duty ratio and heat input. The authors also observed the same result then suggested combination of tunneling effect and random walk of cathode spot to fill up the gap between experiment and conventional arc theory. In this research, suggested combinational work of tunneling effect and rapid cathode spot changing is applied to another unexpected phenomena of variable polarity aluminum arc welding. From previous research, it is reported that wider oxide removal range, narrower bead width and shallower penetration depth are observed in thin oxide layered aluminum compared to the case of thick oxide. This result was reported for the first time and it was hard to explain the reason at that time therefore the inference by the authors was hardly acceptable. However, the suggested combinational theory successfully explains the result of the previous report in logical way.

  • In pressurized water reactors, the upper head of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) contains numerous control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles. These nozzles are fabricated by welding after being inserted into the RPV head with a room temperature shrink fit. The tensile residual stresses caused by this welding are a major factor in primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). Over the last 15 years, the incidences of cracking in alloy 600 CRDM nozzles have increased significantly. These cracks are caused by PWSCC and have been shown to be driven by the welding residual stresses and operational stresses in the weld region. Various measures are being sought to overcome these problems. The defects resulting from the welding process are often the cause of PWSCC acceleration. Therefore, any weld defects found in the RPV manufacturing process are immediately repaired by repair welding. Detailed finite-element simulations for the Korea Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel were conducted in order to predict the magnitudes of the repair weld residual stresses in the tube materials.

  • During the fabrication process of reactor vessel head penetration (RVHP), the grain size of the tube material can be changed by hot or cold work and the inner side of the tube can also be shrunk due to welding outside of the tube. Several nonregular time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) signals were found because of deformed grains. In this paper, an investigation of nonregular TOFD indications acquired from RVHP tubes using experiments and computer simulation was performed in order to identify and distinguish TOFD signals by coarse grains from those by Primary Water Stress Corrosion Crack (PWSCC). For proper understanding of the nonregular TOFD indications, microstructural analysis of the RVHP tubes and prediction of signals scattered from the grains using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation were performed. Prediction of ultrasonic signals from the various sizes of side drilled holes to find equivalent flaws, determination of the size of the nonregular TOFD indications from the coarse grains, and experimental investigation of TOFD signals from coarse grain and shrinkage geometry to identify PWSCC signals were performed. From the computer simulation and experimental investigation results, it was possible to obtain the nonregular TOFD indications from the coarse grains in the alloy 690 penetration tube of RVHP; these nonregular indications may be classified as PWSCC. By comparing the computer simulation and experimental results, we were able to confirm a clear difference between the coarse grain signal and the PWSCC signal.

  • Investigating safer ways to design and use to prevent a loss of life and property by failure of the structures are necessary and assessing total fatigue life with initiation and propagation of fatigue crack accurately through fatigue analysis is very important. The object of this study is to examine the initial life and propagation life when the fatigue crack is introduced from the root which is likely to appear in LOP(Lack of Penetration) cruciform fillet welded structure including bridges, ships and gas storage facilities which are impossible to be fully penetrated and to measure the rate of fatigue life until the final cleavage failure. As the result, each rate of fatigue life for fatigue failure is somewhat different in the range of 5% according to the thickness of material, however, the overall rate of initial life is in the range of 34~39% and propagation life showed the range of 61~66%.
