In this study, we conducted verification of key influencing factors during cone penetration testing using the developed Mini Cone Penetration Tester (Mini-CPT), and compared the experimental results with empirical formulas to validate the equipment. The Mini-CPT was designed to measure cone penetration resistance through a Strain Gauge, and the resistance values were calibrated using a Load Cell. Moreover, the influencing factors were verified using a model ground constituted in a soil box. The primary influencing factors examined were the boundary effect of the soil box, the distance between cone penetration points, and the cone penetration speed. For the verification of these factors, the experiment was conducted with the model ground having a relative density of 63.76% in the soil box. It was observed that the sidewall effect was considerably significant, and the cone penetration resistance measured at subsequent penetration points was higher due to the influence between penetration points. However, within the speed range considered, the effect of penetration speed was almost negligible. The measured cone penetration resistance was compared with predicted values obtained from literature research, and the results were found to be similar. It is anticipated that using the developed Mini-CPT for constructing model grounds in the laboratory will lead to more accurate geotechnical property data.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of mineral admixture' type and replacement ratios on the chloride penetration resistance of concrete which was immersed in the artificial chloride solution. The chloride penetration resistance was evaluated by penetration depth and chloride diffusion coefficient. As a result, all of the mineral admixtures were effective on the chloride penetration resistance of concrete compared to ordinary portland cement only.
After high power lasers are avaliable in the commercial market, the number of applications of the laser welding has been increased in manufacturing industries. Although the tailored blank laser welding of butt jointed steel sheets is well known recently in the automotive industries, the lap joint laser welding is a new technology to the automotive manufacturing people as well as the design people. But the deep penetration laser welding seems to be preferred to the partial penetration welding for the lap joint welding in the automotive manufacturers because the partial penetration is a serious deflect for the butt joint. In this study, the feasibility of partial penetration welding fur the lap joint $CO_2$ laser welding was studied fur the 1mm thick 390MPa high strength steel sheets for automotive bodies. The process window of the lap joint partial penetration welding was obtained from experiments with the gap size and the welding speed as process parameters. The partial penetration welding was found excellent on the basis of the tensile shear strength and sectional geometry. The bead width, input energy Per volume, tensile-shear strength, deformation energy and the sectional geometries after tensile-shear tests of partial penetration welded specimens are compared with those of full penetration welded specimens with a series of gaps and welding speeds.

This paper deals with the effect of concrete target size on penetration of projectiles. We investigated the penetration depth and residual velocity of projectiles using the 2-D axial symmetric model. Most analysis were conducted with 13 kg projectile (striking velocity: 456.4 m/s) and concrete target with compressive strength of 39 MPa. This paper provided penetration depth (or residual velocity) versus ratio D/d (target diameter, D and projectile diameter, d). When the bottom of concrete cylinder was constrained, penetration depth converged to limit depth more than the ratio D/d of 36. The residual velocity of projectile with thin concrete target were investigated. The residual velocity was converged to specific velocity more than the ratio D/d of 16.
This paper presents a study of the strength and chloride penetration of blended Portland cement mortar containing ground palm oil fuel ash (POA) and ground river sand (GS). Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was partially replaced with POA and GS. Compressive strength, rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) and chloride penetration depth of mortars were determined. The GS only asserted the packing effect and its incorporation reduced the strength and the resistance to chloride penetration of mortar. The POA asserted both packing and pozzolanic effects. The use of the blend of equal portion of POA and GS also produced high strength mortars, save cost and excellent resistance to chloride penetration owing to the synergic effect of the blend of POA and GS. For chloride depth, the mathematical model correlates well with the experimental results. The computer graphics of chloride depth of the ternary blended mortars are also constructed and can be used to aid the understanding and the proportioning of the blended system.
Topical preparations such as cream for Acyclovir(ACV), a potent anti-viral agent for the treatment of herpes simplex and herpes zoster, have been marketed in the world since 1993. However, the skin penetration rate of ACV from generic cream formulations sold in Europe has been found to be lower than the original $Zovirax^{\circledR}$ cream. In this study, we formulated ACV into a novel organogel system and compared the skin penetration characteristics with $Zovirax^{\circledR}$ cream. The rate and amount of skin penetration of ACV from the organogels were 6.3-fold greater than those obtained with $Zovirax^{\circledR}$ at an ACV concentration of 5%. The solubilizing effect of oil phase and anti-nucleation effect exhibited by sodium alginate contained in water phase are most likely attributed to enhanced ACV skin penetration property.
The effect of $O_2$and Al contents and the variation of welding parameters such as arc currents, welding speed on the weld penetration was investigated. Examination of weld penetration using GTAW was accomplished in the ferritic STS410L and austenitic STS304. Good penetration could be controlled by the variation of $O_2$ and Al contents in STS304. However, influences of $O_2$ and Al contents on the ferritic STS410L are far less than those on the austenitic STS304. Welding parameters should be considered first before controlling $O_2$ and Al contents for a good penetration in ferritic STS410L. In the simulation study under the stationary heat sources, the results of simulation and experiment have a similar tendency.

In order to estimate the chloride ion penetration, the model, which considers diffusion and sorption, is proposed on the basis of Finite Element Method (FEM). The FEM program provides the estimation of chloride concentration according to cyclic humidity and sorption. After the humidity diffusion analysis is carried out, the chloride ion diffusion and sorption analysis are conducted on the basis of the preestimated humidity data in each element. Each element has different analysis variables at different ages and locations. At early ages and constant outer humidity, the difference between inner and outer relative humidity causes the chloride ion penetration by sorption. As the humidity diffusion reduces the difference with age, the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration decreases. By the way, the cyclic humidity increases the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration at early ages, and the quantity of chloride ion around steel at later ages. Therefore, the in-situ analysis of chloride ion penetration for marine concrete structures must be performed considering the cyclic humidity condition and the long term sorption.
This study investigates the effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and silica fume addition on the chloride penetration resistance of alkali-activated slag. Silica fume was added to replace slag at the dosage of 0, 5, 10, and 20% by weight of the binder, while PVA fiber was added at the dosage of 0, 1, and 2% by volume of the mixture. Samples were synthesized via alkali activator with 1.0 of silicate modulus and cured at room temperature for 28 days. Compressive strength test, permeable voids volume test, water absorprtion test, and rapid chloride penetration test were conducted for measuring the charaterisitics of alkali-activaed slag. The results showed that increasing silica fume content up to 10% in alkali-activated slag improved compressive strength and chloride penetration resistance. Addition of PVA fibers up to 1% by volume enhanced strength and chloride penetration resistance, but exceeding this led to reduced strength and durability due to increased void formation in the matrix.

The survivability of warship is assessed by susceptibility, vulnerability and recoverability. Essentially, a vulnerability assessment is a measure of the effectiveness of a warship to resist hostile weapon effects. Considering the shot line and its penetration effect on the warship, present study introduces the procedural aspects of vulnerability assessments of warship. Present study also considers the prediction of penetration damage to a target caused by the impact of projectiles. It reflects the interaction between the weapon and the target from a perspective of vulnerable area method and COVART model. The shotline and tracing calculation have been directly integrated into the vulnerability assessment method based on the penetration equation empirically obtained. A simplified geometric description of the desired target and specification of a threat type is incorporated with the penetration effect. This study describes how to expand the vulnerable area assessment method to the penetration effect. Finally, an example shows that the proposed method can provide the vulnerability parameters of the warship or its component under threat being hit through tracing the shotline path thereby enabling the vulnerability calculation. In addition, the proposed procedure enabling the calculation of the component's multi-hit vulnerability introduces a propulsion system in dealing with redundant Non-overlapping components.
