  • In this paper, we develop discontinuous Galerkin methods with penalty terms, namaly symmetric interior penalty Galerkin methods to solve nonlinear parabolic equations. By introducing an appropriate projection of u onto finite element spaces, we prove the optimal convergence of the fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations in ${\ell}^2(L^2)$ normed space.

  • This paper is concerned with the flow shop scheduling problems considering different weighted penalty costs for earliness and lateness, and a common due date. The objective of the paper is to develop an efficient heuristic scheduling algorithm for minimizing total penalty costs and for determining the optimal common due date. The positional weight index and, the product sum method are used. A numerical example is given for illustrating the proposed algorithm.

  • The governing functional in plastic deformation has to satisfy the incompressible condition. This incompressible condition imposed on the velocity fields can be removed by introducing either the Langrange multiplier or the penalty function into the functional. In the study two-dimensional rigid plastic FEM programs using by Lagrange multiplier and penalty function are developed. A compression of cylinder and a spike forging are simulated to compare the data of loads, local mean stresses and reductions of volume.

  • In this paper, we consider the shortest path network problem with fixed charges. A turn penalty algorithm for the shortest path problem with fixed charges or turn penalties is presented, which is using the next node comparison method. The algorithm described here is designed to determine the shortest route in the shortest path network problem including turn penalties. Additionally, the way to simplify the computation for the shortest path problem with turn penalties was pursued.

  • This paper presents a rank-constrained linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to the design of a multi-objective controller such as $H_2/H_{\infty}$ control. Multi-objective control is formulated as an LMI optimization problem with a nonconvex rank condition, which is imposed on the controller gain matirx not Lyapunov matrices. With this rank-constrained formulation, we can expect to reduce conservatism because we can use separate Lyapunov matrices for different control objectives. An iterative penalty method is applied to solve this rank-constrained LMI optimization problem. Numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the proposed method.

  • This paper presents an improved method of calculating the penalty factors for economic load dispatch based on B-coefficient and AC load flow and their performance comparison. The algorithm for calculating B-coefficients by Meyer is improved and its performance is compared with that of AC load flow. The B-coefficient method is superior to the load flow method in its simplicity and computation speed. However accuracy of the B-coefficient method is not satisfactory when it is applied to the ill-conditioned systems where generators produce excessive reactive power.

  • This paper is concerned with an iterative linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to the design of a structurally constrained output feedback controller such as decentralized control. The structured synthesis is formulated as a novel rank-constrained LMI optimization problem, where the controller parameters are explicitly described so as to impose structural constraints on the parameter matrices. An iterative penalty method is applied to solve the rank-constrained LMI problem. Numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • We present a novel joint barcode deblurring and nonuniform illumination compensation algorithm for barcode signals whose number of modules is known. The proposed algorithm is based on a penalized least squares method using a roughness penalty function for an illumination model and a double well penalty function for a barcode signal model. In simulations, the proposed method shows an improved performance compared with a conventional method without compensating nonuniform illumination effects. In addition, the proposed method converges quickly during optimization(within 15 iterations), thereby showing strong possibility for real time decoding of barcode signals.

  • A semi analytical method is employed to analyze free vibration characteristics of uniform and stepped functionally graded circular cylindrical shells under complex boundary conditions. The analytical model is established based on multi-segment partitioning strategy and first-order shear deformation theory. The displacement functions are handled by unified Jacobi polynomials and Fourier series. In order to obtain continuous conditions and satisfy complex boundary conditions, the penalty method about spring technique is adopted. The solutions about free vibration behavior of functionally graded circular cylindrical shells were obtained by approach of Rayleigh-Ritz. To confirm the dependability and validity of present approach, numerical verifications and convergence studies are conducted on functionally graded cylindrical shells under various influencing factors such as boundaries, spring parameters et al. The present method apparently has rapid convergence ability and excellent stability, and the results of the paper are closely agreed with those obtained by FEM and published literatures.
