  • This study investigated the relationships between socio-economic status of family, home environment stimulation, children's behavioral problems, and interactive peer play of preschool children. Surveys of 2,150 Korean mothers with their preschool children(Mean age= 51.9 months) from the Panel Study of Korean Children by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Each variable's confirmatory factor analysis showed the correlation coefficient below .85, which made a satisfactory level of discriminant validity. The model fit to the data well, with an agreeable level of index. The major findings were as follows. First, SES did not significantly affected children's interactive peer play. Second, SES significantly affected home environment stimulation and children's behavioral problems. And the relationship between SES and children's behavioral problems are significantly mediated by home environment stimulation. Third, the relationship between SES and children's interactive peer play are significantly mediated by home environment stimulation and children's behavioral problems. These results help better understand the paths among the home characteristics and children's behavioral problems on children's social development. Interpretation and implication of the results have been discussed.

  • This study investigated the relations among maternal cognition, maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors, and their children's peer competence. The participants were 40 kindergarten children and their mothers. The mothers completed a questionnaire concerning maternal beliefs about children's social skills. Also their supervisory/monitoring behaviors were observed in the context of child-peer interactions. Children's peer competence was measured using a sociometric status measure and a peer acceptance rating scale. Maternal beliefs were related both to the quantity/quality of maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors and to children's peer competence. Maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors were also related to children's actual peer competence.

  • This study investigated the agreement between 3 assessments of preschoolers' friendship: peer nominations, teacher nominations, and behavioral observations. The relationship between friendship, social status, social competence, and play behaviors was also investigated. The subjects were 44 5-year-olds. Teachers were asked to rate the children's social competence; play behaviors were observed during free play time. The results indicated high agreement between the 3 assessments. Popular children were more likely to have friends than other social status groups. Children without friends were more hesitant than children with friends. Children with friends were more accepted by peers and engaged in cooperative social play more than children without friends.

  • The purposes of this study were 1) to identify the effects of psychological characteristics and peer acceptance on female adolescents'clothing behaviors(clothing attitudes and preference for up-to-date style), and 2) to determine the differences in psychological characteristics and clothing behaviors among subject groups classified by sociometric status. The questionnaires dealing with public/private self-consciousness, adolescent egocentrism, self-efficacy and clothing behaviors were adapted from precious studies. Peer acceptance was measured using Coie and Dodge(1983) method. The data were collected from 485 middle and high school girls living in Seoul, Korea. From the results of multiple regression of psychological characteristics and peer acceptance on clothing behaviors, clothing sexual attractiveness, clothing exhibition, and clothing importance were found to be influenced by public self-consciousness, adolescent egocentrism and peer acceptance. Fashion leadership and psychological dependence were influenced by egocentrism and self-efficacy. Preference for up-to-date style was influenced by egocentrism, public self-consciousness and self-efficacy. One-way ANOVA was used for analyzing the differences in research variables among subject groups classified by sociometric status. From the reset of middle school girls it was revealed that ignored group showed the highest score in clothing importance, whereas both popular group and rejected group showed the lowest score in social self-efficacy. In high school girls, controversial group showed the highest scores in adolescent egocentrism, fashion leadership, and preference for up-to-date style.

  • This study investigated children's friendship factors such as number of friends, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics as a function of children's sociometric status. The concordance between children's and their friends'perceptions of friendship quality was examined. Subjects were fifth grade students recruited from two public schools. The peer nomination index assessed peer rejection and acceptance. Positive and negative nominations as well as social preference identified children into rejected and popular groups. Children who nominated each other on their list of friends were considered mutual friends. Children reported the quality of their friendships using the friendship quality scale. The results showed that rejected children had fewer mutual friends compared to popular children. Rejected children as well as their friends perceived their friendships less positively. Moreover, rejected children's perception showed lower correlations with their friends'perceptions than popular children's perceptions. Furthermore, rejected children were similar with friends in respect to peer rejection level. It was concluded that rejected children's problems in their peer group and dyadic friendships may mutually influence each other. The findings from this study highlight the need for future research on friendship quality and psychosocial adjustment for rejected children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between social support and perception of self-confidence in children by grade, sex, and other related variables. The subjects were 136 third-graders, 143 sixth-graders, and 161 eighth-graders in public schools located in Pusan. Instruments were Harter's Self-Perception Profile for Children and the Social Support Appraisal Scale (SSAS). The SSAS is a 31-item measure that taps children's perception of family, peer, and teacher support. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentile, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. The main results showed that (1) children in 6th and 8th grades perceived higher peer support than children in 3rd grade, (2) except for social acceptance, the children in higher grades perceived themselves lower in self-competence than the children in lower grades, (3) there was a positive relationship between children's perception of self-competence and social support, and (4) the variables which influenced children's self-perception were, in descending order: socioeconomic status(${\beta}=.52$), age(${\beta}=.21$), social support(${\beta}=.10$). • Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors affecting the mental health status of children from multicultural families in South Korea. Methods: This study was based on Dahlgren and Whitehead's (1991) rainbow model as a conceptual framework and used data from the second phase of the multicultural adolescents panel study conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed using SPSS version 26.0, with p<.05 considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: In the final model, stress (odds ratio [OR]=0.53, p<.001), life satisfaction (OR=2.09, p=.004), self-esteem (OR=1.73, p=.032), and peer support (OR=1.46, p=.019) affected the mental health status of children from multicultural families. The living and working conditions and general socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions did not significantly influence the mental health status of children from multicultural families in the final model. Conclusion: As components of Dahlgren and Whitehead's model, individual hereditary and lifestyle factors, as well as social and community networks, affected the mental health status of children from multicultural families. Therefore, in order to improve the mental health of children from multicultural families, efforts are needed to alleviate their stress, increase life satisfaction and self-esteem, and strengthen their social support.
