With 338 fifth-grade students as subjects, this study examined variations in the relation between school bullying and rejection or acceptance by peers as a function of gender and types of aggression. Results showed that the more a boy bullied other children, the more likely he was to be rejected by peers. The more a girl bullied other children, the more likely she was to be accepted by peers. Girls' aggressive behaviors also contributed to their acceptance by peers. When levels of physical and relational aggression were kept constant, verbal aggression was positively related to peer rejection for boys but negatively related for girls. The use of relational aggression contributed to peer rejection only for girls. The findings provide preliminary bases for understanding bullying. Implications of the gender differences are discussed.
This study investigated cross-informant measures of peer group victimization. The subjects were 460 children in the fifth and sixth grades. Children completed questionnaires that assessed their own victimization feelings of loneliness, and self-perception. They also completed peer nominations concerning peer acceptance and rejection. The results suggest that self-reported victimization is more predictive of loneliness and self-perception, whereas victimization from peer nominations is more predictive of peer rejection and acceptance.
Data were collected by peer nomination and sociometric nomination when children were in 4th grade and again two years later, Concurrent results of peer nominations were that prosocial children were more accepted while overtly/relationally aggressive children were more rejected by peers. Peer acceptance of males at Time 1 affected peer acceptance at Time 2. Peer rejection of females at Time 2 wasn't affected by overt aggression at Time 1. Cross-sectional results of social status were that rejected and controversial children showed higher levels of overt aggression than any other group. Popular children were most prosocial; rejected children were least prosocial. In the prospective view, aggressive males remained more rejected than any other group. Rejected children remained least prosocial.
The present study investigated the influence of withdrawal on children's best friendship including prevalence of best friendship, friendship quality, and friends' psychosocial characteristics. Subjects were 471 fifth and sixth graders recruited from two public schools. The peer nomination index was used to assess peer victimization, withdrawal, and prosocial behavior. Peer rejection and acceptance were also measured. Children reported on the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale(Bukowsi et al., 1994). Results showed that compared to control group, withdrawn children had fewer best friends and perceived their friendship quality more negatively. Moreover, withdrawn children are similar with their best friends in respect with prosocial behavior, withdrawal, peer victimization, and peer rejection level.
The main body of research literature on peer relations has focused on its effects on children's psychosocial and emotional development from preschool period to adolescence. Topics of the research generally consist of peer acceptance/rejection, friendships, and peer victimization. In the review of domestic and international research conducted since late 1990, research trends and issues are described in this paper. Findings suggest some measures in interventions, prevention, and policies in promoting positive peer relations. Some social skill trainings are needed for children to react appropriately in peer relations and get along with their peers. In addition, there is a need for differentiation of the intervention programs by participants' roles in bullying situations and gender of children. Moreover, a longitudinal research is required to enhance the understanding of developmental changes in peer relations.
This study explored gender differences in social status, acceptance/rejection, perceived popularity, social emotions, avoidance and anxiety by participant roles in bullying situations. Subjects were 215 6th grade children. Instruments were the Participant Roles (Sutton & Smith, 1999), Peer Nomination (Coie & Dodge, 1983 Cillessen & Mayeux, 2004), Social Avoidance and Social Anxiety (Franke & Hymel, 1984) scales. Results showed that more boys than girls were in pro-bullying participant role groups; more girls than boys were in outsider groups. Boy pro-bullies were high in social rejection. Boy defenders were high in popularity and low in social avoidance. Boy outsiders had high social anxiety. Girl victims had low social status, low social acceptance and lowest perceived popularity; they were high in social avoidance and social rejection.
Data were collected from 514 elementary school students from 1st to 6th grade with questionnaires on Parental Behavior, Bullying, and Peer-Victimization. Sixth graders reported the lowest perception of warmth-acceptance, and 1st graders reported the highest perception of rejection-restriction by fathers. Males perceived more parental rejection-restriction. Children perceived more warmth-acceptance from mothers, and they perceived more permissiveness-nonintervention from fathers. Parenting behaviors were significantly related to bullying and victimization. The Bullying/Victimization group reported the lowest parental warmth-acceptance. Both Victimization and Bullying/Victimization groups showed higher parental rejection-restriction than other groups. The Victimization group showed highest paternal permissiveness-nonintervention. Victimization and Bullying/Victimization groups reported higher maternal permissiveness-nonintervention than other groups.
This study investigated children's friendship factors such as number of friends, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics as a function of children's sociometric status. The concordance between children's and their friends'perceptions of friendship quality was examined. Subjects were fifth grade students recruited from two public schools. The peer nomination index assessed peer rejection and acceptance. Positive and negative nominations as well as social preference identified children into rejected and popular groups. Children who nominated each other on their list of friends were considered mutual friends. Children reported the quality of their friendships using the friendship quality scale. The results showed that rejected children had fewer mutual friends compared to popular children. Rejected children as well as their friends perceived their friendships less positively. Moreover, rejected children's perception showed lower correlations with their friends'perceptions than popular children's perceptions. Furthermore, rejected children were similar with friends in respect to peer rejection level. It was concluded that rejected children's problems in their peer group and dyadic friendships may mutually influence each other. The findings from this study highlight the need for future research on friendship quality and psychosocial adjustment for rejected children.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships of mother's childrearing behavior, children's behavior problems, locus of control and peer victimization. The subjects were 360 children of 4th and 6th grade and their mothers. The instruments were Peer Victimization Scale, CBCL, Locus of Control Scale for Children, Childrearing Behavior Scale. The major findings of this study were as follows; (1) The type of peer victimization had a significant difference between girls and boys. That is, boys were more focused on overt victimization than girls. There was no significant gender difference in relational victimization, And there was no significant grade difference in overt and relational victimization. (2) Mother's rejection-restriction childrearing behavior, children's social withdrawal behavior problems, extemal locus of control predicted children's peer victimization. 24% of the variance of children's peer victimization was explained by these variables. (3) Mother's rejection-restriction childrearing behavior was the first contribution factor and had a direct and indirect effect through children's locus of control on children's peer victimization. And children's social withdrawal behavior problems was second contribution factor and had a direct effect on children's peer victimization. Children's locus of control had a direct and indirect effect through children's social withdrawal behavior problems on children's peer victimization. Mother's warmth-acceptance and permissiveness-nonintervention childrearing behavior had indirect effect through children's locus of control on children's peer victimization.
