Evaluating the impact of urban multifunctional walls on pedestrian wind comfort on street sidewalks (Case study: Tabriz city)

  • Wind comfort in cold climates is one of the most essential factors for urban planners. This issue is particularly important for sidewalks that are in line with the prevailing wind flow and surrounded by high-rise buildings. Imam Street near the University Square in Tabriz is one of the passages that struggle with uncomfortable wind speeds. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of sidewalk walls on pedestrian wind comfort. These multifunctional walls not only serve as street furniture, but also reduce wind speed at pedestrian level. In this work, all simulations are performed using the RWIND tool and validated by wind tunnel experiments at the Architectural Institute of Japan. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the angle, height and spacing of the walls on wind attenuation at pedestrian level. The results show the effect of multifunctional walls on pedestrian-level wind mitigation. By rotating the windbreak walls from 0 to 60 degrees along the street, the average wind speed decreases by 30% to 46% compared to a situation without this type of wall. Increasing the wall height from 1.5 to 2 meters reduces the urban wind speed by 39-46%. However, increasing the distance between the sidewalk walls from 3.5-9.5 meters reduces the speed in the models from 46% to 32.7%. Finally, it has been demonstrated that sidewalk walls with a height of 2 meters, a rotation angle of 60° and a distance of 3.5 meters are the optimal choice for wind attenuation at pedestrian level.

  • Wind loads and environments in realistic situations surrounded by neighboring buildings may be considerably different from those in idealized or simplified situations such as codes and standards. Interference effects of change in wind passage of a building group on wind loads and wind environments are reviewed. Wind-induced interference effects depend mainly on the building geometry and arrangement of these structures, their orientation and upstream terrain conditions. The most important factor among them may be the arrangement of building structures which can change the wind direction directly. Interference effects regarding wind loads are discussed with examples of window damages by typhoon and of pressure measurements in the boundary layer wind tunnel. Wind environment problems are also discussed, specially underlined on pedestrian comfort and safety. Various evaluation techniques or standards of wind environment are introduced. The change of wind velocity between the panel-type apartment buildings is examined, depending on the distance each other.

Systematic influence of wind incident directions on wind circulation in the re-entrant corners of high-rise buildings

  • The mechanical and aerodynamic effect of building shape plays a dominate role in the pedestrian level wind environment. These effects have been presented in numerous studies and are available in many wind codes. However, most studies have focused on wind flow around conventional buildings and are limited to few wind directions. The present study investigated wind circulation in the re-entrant corners of cross-shaped high-rise buildings from various wind directions. The investigation focused on the pedestrian level wind environment in the re-entrant corners with different aspect ratios of building arrangements. Ninety cases of case study arrangements were evaluated using wind tunnel experimentation. The results show that for adequate wind circulation in the re-entrant corners, building orientations and separations play a critical role. Furthermore, in normal wind incident directions and at a high aspect ratio, poor wind flow was observed in the re-entrant corners. Moreover, it was noted that an optimized building orientation and aspect ratio significantly improved the wind flow in re-entrant corners and through passages. In addition, it was observed that oblique wind incident direction increased wind circulation in the re-entrant corners and through passages.

Wind tunnel model studies to predict the action of wind on the projected 558 m Jakarta Tower

  • A study of wind effects was carried out at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL) for the projected 558-m high free-standing telecommunication and observation tower for Jakarta, Indonesia. The objectives were to assist the designers with various aspects of wind action, including the overall structural loads and responses of the Tower shaft and the antenna superstructure, the local wind pressures on components of the exterior envelope, and winds in pedestrian areas. The designers of the Tower are the East China Architectural Design Institute (ECADI) and PT Menara Jakarta, Indonesia. Unfortunately, the project is halted due to the financial uncertainties in Indonesia. At the time of the stoppage, pile driving had been completed and slip forming of the concrete shaft of the Tower had begun. When completed, the Tower will exceed the height of the CN-Tower in Toronto, Canada by some 5 m.

  • 영상유고감지시스템은 터널 내 보행자, 낙하물, 정지 차량, 역주행, 화재(화염 및 연기) 등 돌발상황 시에 초동 감지 목적의 시스템으로 최근 도심지의 대심도 지하도로 건설에 따라 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 그러므로 영상유고감지시스템을 대심도 복층터널에 적용하기 위하여 복층터널의 설계 특성을 반영하여 개발하였고, 본 논문에서는 특히 기존 영상유고감지시스템에서는 지원되지 않거나 또는 오감지가 많아 복층터널 환경에 그대로 적용하기 어려웠던 화재 감지를 색 영상 분포, 실루엣 확산 및 통계적 특성 분석을 복합적으로 사용하는 방법을 제안하고, 이를 복층터널 테스트베드 환경에서 차량 실물화재 실험을 통하여 검증하였다.

Wind direction field under the influence of topography, part I: A descriptive model

  • In both structural and environmental wind engineering, the vertical variation of wind direction is important as it impacts both the torsional response of the high-rise building and the pedestrian level wind environment. In order to systematically investigate the vertical variation of wind directions (i.e., the so-called 'twist effect') induced by hills with idealized geometries, a series of wind-tunnel tests was conducted. The length-to-width aspect ratios of the hill models were 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2 and 3, and the measurements of both wind speeds and directions were taken on a three-dimensional grid system. From the wind-tunnel tests, it has been found that the direction changes and most prominent at the half height of the hill. On the other hand, the characteristic length of the direction change, has been found to increase when moving from the windward zone into the wake. Based on the wind-tunnel measurements, a descriptive model is proposed to calculate both the horizontal and vertical variations of wind directions. Preliminarily validated against the wind-tunnel measurements, the proposed model has been found to be acceptable to describe the direction changes induced by an idealized hill with an aspect ratio close to 1. For the hills with aspect ratios less than 1, while the description of the vertical variation is still valid, the horizontal description proposed by the model has been found unfit.

Unsteady aerodynamic force on a transverse inclined slender prism using forced vibration

  • This work investigates the effects of transverse inclination on an aeroelastic prism through forced-vibration wind tunnel experiments. The aerodynamic characteristics are tri-parametrically evaluated under different wind speeds, inclination angles, and oscillation amplitudes. Results show that transverse inclination fundamentally changes the wake phenomenology by impinging the fix-end horseshoe vortex and breaking the separation symmetry. The aftermath is a bi-polar, one-and-for-all change in the aerodynamics near the prism base. The suppression of the horseshoe vortex unleashes the Kármán vortex, which significantly increases the unsteady crosswind force. After the initial morphology switch, the aerodynamics become independent of inclination angle and oscillation amplitude and depend solely on wind speed. The structure's upper portion does not feel the effect, so this phenomenon is called Base Intensification. The phenomenon only projects notable impacts on the low-speed and VIV regime and is indifferent in the high-speed. In practice, Base Intensification will disrupt the pedestrian-level wind environment from the unleashed Bérnard-Kármán vortex shedding. Moreover, it increases the aerodynamic load at a structure base by as much as 4.3 times. Since fix-end stiffness prevents elastic dissipation, the load translates to massive stress, making detection trickier and failures, if they are to occur, extreme, and without any warnings.

Will CFD ever Replace Wind Tunnels for Building Wind Simulations?

  • The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is becoming an increasingly popular means to model wind flows in and around buildings. The first published application of CFD to both indoor and outdoor building airflows was in the 1970's. Since then, CFD usage has expanded to include different aspects of building design. Wind tunnel testing (WTT) on buildings for wind loads goes back as far as 1908. Gustave Eiffel built a pair of wind tunnels in 1908 and 1912. Using these he published wind loads on an aircraft hangar in 1919 as cited in Hoerner (1965 - page 74). The second of these wind tunnels is still in use today for tests including building design ($Damljanovi{\acute{c}}$, 2012). The Empire State Building was tested in 1933 in smooth flow - see Baskaran (1993). The World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City were wind tunnel tested in the mid-sixties for both wind loads, at Colorado State University (CSU) and the [US] National Physical Laboratory (NPL), as well as pedestrian level winds (PLW) at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) - Baskaran (1993). Since then, the understanding of the planetary boundary layer, recognition of the structures of turbulent wakes, instrumentation, methodologies and analysis have been continuously refined. There is a drive to replace WTT with computational methods, with the rationale that CFD is quicker, less expensive and gives more information and control to the architects. However, there is little information available to building owners and architects on the limitations of CFD for flows around buildings and communities. Hence building owners, developers, engineers and architects are not aware of the risks they incur by using CFD for different studies, traditionally conducted using wind tunnels. This paper will explain what needs to happen for CFD to replace wind tunnels. Ultimately, we anticipate the reader will come to the same conclusion that we have drawn: both WTT and CFD will continue to play important roles in building and infrastructure design. The most pressing challenge for the design and engineering community is to understand the strengths and limitations of each tool so that they can leverage and exploit the benefits that each offers while adhering to our moral and professional obligation to hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.

Application Examples of CFD at the Planning Stage of High-Rise Buildings

  • Application examples of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the planning stage of high-rise buildings are introduced. First, we introduce examples of applications in the environmental field. The pedestrian wind environment was one of the earliest practical examples of CFD. CFD was also employed to validate the heat island mitigation measures proposed as part of the new construction plan. Second, application examples of wind-force evaluations are introduced. Prediction examples are presented for the peak wind pressure around a complex-shaped building and the wind force evaluation for a base-isolated building. The results prove that the results of the proper execution of CFD are equivalent to those of the wind tunnel experiment. As examples of CFD applications of other issues related to high-rise building planning, we introduce snow accretion on outer walls and high-temperature exhaust from emergency generators. Finally, the future prospects for the use of CFD are discussed.

국내 지하공간 개발 및 대책 (Underground Space Development and Strategy in Korea)

  • 우리나라는 99,274 $km^2$의 협소한 면적에 산지가 약 70%을 차지하고 있다. 게다가 인구밀도는 세계 3위의 조밀한 국가이다. 따라서 우리나라는 지하공간을 새로이 활용해야 할 국토로 간주하고 적극적으로 개발할 필요가 있다. 우리에게는 지하공간개발이 선택이 아니라 필수이다. 국내에서는 1970년 이후로 가스 원유비축기지, 지하 양수발전소가 건설되었고 주로 대도시에서 지하철, 상가, 보도, 공동구, 주차장 등의 형태로 지하공간이 활용되어 왔다. 여수 지하석유 비축기지와 지하철은 세계적인 규모이다. 최근에는 지하공간의 개발이 더욱 다양화 되고 또한 대규모화 되고 있는 추세이다. 국내 지하공간 개발현황과 문제점 및 대책에 대하여 소개하였다.
