  • BACKGROUND: Carbonized biomass is a carbon-rich solid product obtained by the pyrolysis of biomass. It has been suggested to mitigate climate change through increased carbon storage and reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The objective of this study was to evaluate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions from soil after carbonized biomass addition. METHODS AND RESULTS: The carbonized biomass was made from a pyrolyzer, which a reactor was operated about $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. The treatments were consisted of a control without input of carbonized biomass and two levels of carbonized biomass inputs as 6.06 Mg/ha for CB-1 and 12.12 Mg/ha for CB-2. Emissions of $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ from orchard soil were determined using closed chamber for 13 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature. It was shown that the cumulative $CO_2$ were $209.4g\;CO_2/m^2$ for CB-1, $206.4g\;CO_2/m^2$ for CB-2 and $214.5g\;CO_2/m^2$ for the control after experimental periods. The cumulative $CO_2$ emission was similar in carbonized biomass input treatment compared to the control. It was appeared that cumulative $N_2O$ emissions were $4,478mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for control, $3,227mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for CB-1 and$ 2,324mg\;N_2O/m^2$ for CB-2 at the end of experiment. Cumulative $N_2O$ emission contents significantly decreased with increasing the carbonized biomass input. CONCLUSION: Consequently the carbonized biomass from byproducts such as pear branch residue could suppress the soil $N_2O$ emission. The results fromthe study imply that carbonized biomass can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the orchard field.

  • Changes in runoff and soil erosion at slightly hilly erosive plots with pear trees over a three-year period were monitored under two distinct types of weed treatment by herbides : (1) pre-emergence herbicide with glyphosate; (2) post-emergence herbicide with paraquat. The numbers of rainfall events from June to Nov for three years of experimental periods were approximately 50 times in the plots having 5.5%to 10.2%slope at an altitude of 125 m. The steady-state infiltration rate was generally increased in the bare plot from which all weeds were removed while it was decreased in the herbicide treated plots and control. The runoffs from the control plot during the experimental periods were always less than those from plots of the herbicide-treated and the bare. The runoff under the same rainfall intensity was decreased in the order of bare, glyphosate, paraquat, and control. This results indicated that the removal time of weed by the different types of herbicides might influenced the runoff rate. For the first two years of the experimental periods, loss of fine fraction was much greater than that of coarse fraction while soil loss was correlated neither with total rainfall nor amount of runoff. The soil erosion rate under the same rainfall intensity was increased in the order of control, glyphosate, paraquat, and bare plot. However, there were not much differences in the soil loss for all plots under a relatively lower rainfall intensity less than 30 mm $day^{-1}$, resulting in rainfall intensity was important factor on soil erosion.

  • The periodic application effects of two different herbicides on soil physical properties were observed in a slightly hilly orchard of pear tree located on the southestern flank of the Palbong Mountain in Gongju Chungnam : (1) bare surface vegetation; (2) glyphosate-treated plot; (3) paraquat-treated plot. The slope of experimental plots ranged from 5.5%to 10.2%at an altitude of 125 mand 896 $m^2$ ($28m{\times}32m$) in area. The total respective rainfall events were 47, 52, 52 times during experimental period from 2006 to 2008, while approximately 65 percent of daily rainfall intensity from2006 to 2008 was less than 20 mm a day. The organic matter contents on the surface 15 cm soil ranging from1.23%to 1.84%in 2006 were changed into from1.35 %to 2.28%in 2008 in the order of control > glyphosate > paraquat > bare plot in 2008, indicating that the herbicide treatment influenced the accumulation organic matter in soil. The changes in soil particle contents showed that the loss of soil particles in top 5 cm soil depth was greater in a bare soil than in other treatments such as control, glyphosate, and paraquat-treated plot. The net changes in the bulk densities showed that there were little variations between May of 2006 and Nov. of 2008 even though there were some losses of the soil particles. The soil strength of the glyphosate-treated bare plots was much greater than those of other plots such as control, glyphosate, and paraquat plots. However the soil strengths in control plots were lower than those in the plots of glyphosate and paraquat treated ones.

  • Heavy reliance on organosynthetic chemical methods to control agricultural pest tends to deteriorate and lower fertility of soil. We studied annual occurrence of earthworm in environment-friendly agroecosystem and attempted to determine the degree of soil contamination. Candidate bioindicators of earthworm in agroecosystem were selected through analysis of earthworm diversities. Depending on the degree of pesticide use, the fields were devided into conventional, less-pesticide, pesticide free, and organic fields. A nearby field not in agricultural use was chosen as a control. This study was carried out in the greenhouses (lettuce and grape) in 2006 and in orchards (apple, pear, peach, citrus and grape) in 2007. Earthworm was collected from 50 $\times$ 50 $\times$ 10 cm$^3$ of respective soil. We found 11 species from 5 genera and 3 families, and 12 species from 4 genera and 3 families in the greenhouses and in orchards, respectively. The contents of organic matter in soil in the greenhouses were variable but quite less so in orchards. Amynthas heteropodus occurred most frequently in both sites suggesting that it could be adopted as a bioindicator in agroecosystem in Korea.

  • In 2010, two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae was collected from the rose greenhouse and apple orchards in Cheongju (CJ), Chungju (CUJ)-1, CUJ-2, Kangjin (KJ), Yesan (YS), and Yeongju (YJ). Among them, KJ and YS strain showed high resistance to bifenazate of 964.5- and 1l30-fold, respectively. The other strains showed low resistance to bifenazate. By analyzing the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) sequence, G126S point mutation was detected in KJ and YS strain. Thus, G126S point mutation in the mitochondrial cytb was available molecular detection marker for selection of bifenazate resistant T. urticae. Two molecular detection methods, quantitative sequencing (QS) and PCR amplification of specific alleles (PASA) were well detected specific G126S point mutation. Therefore, these methods can be used to monitor the resistance allele in field population of T. urticae and bifenazate resistance management strategy.

  • This study was conducted to select the cover crops in organic apple orchard by estimating the coverage of each cover crops and time-periodic weed occurrence. Seeding of Festuca myuros and Trifolium repens showed high contents of soil organic matter and phosphorus as compared with control. Seeding of Trifolium sp., Hordeum vulgare and Secale cereal reduced relatively occurrence of weed in May and S. cereal among others showed the greatest effect in June. In July, seeding F. arundinaceae and Poa pratensis showed low coverage and a lot of weeds occurred in their field. Fifty one species were occurred as weeds and it needs to removal of high and broadleaf weeds such as Chenopodium ficifolium, C. album var. centrorubru and Humulus japonicus in spring to increase the rate of ground cover. P. pratensis having the lowest cover rate showed the similar dry weight of weeds as compared with control. Trifolium sp. and Persicaria hydropiper had a high correlation with contents of soil organic matter and C. album var. centrorubru had a correlation with contents of soil phosphorus by CCA analysis.

  • This study was conducted to investigate impacts of soil properties on microbial distribution in Jeonbuk orchard fields. Soil samples were collected from 110 sites cultivated with different fruit plants. The population of aerobic bacteria and fungi and the content of soil microbial biomass carbon (C) were found to increase with increasing silt content in the soils. Different activity of dehydrogenase was not observed among the different textures of soil. Microbial distribution, amount of microbial biomass C, and dehydrogenase activity in the soils were not significantly different among the topographic sites. However, in pear and grape fruit plant fields, coliform group of bacteria was found in relatively higher population, $133.0{\times}10^3\;CFU\;g^{-1}$ and $107.4{\times}10^3\;CFU\;g^{-1}$, respectively. Microbial groups were simplified and their density was reduced with increasing the cultivation periods of fruit plants. The soil microbial distribution was proportionally correlated with some of soil properties such as soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM) content, and exchangeable Mg content; in particular, the population of Bacillus sp. was proportionally correlated with soil pH and exchangeable Mg content. The amounts of microbial biomass C and the dehydrogenase activity in the soils were significantly correlated with the contents of SOM and exchangeable Ca ion (p<0.01).

  • This study was carried out to develop the forecasting model of Pseudococcus comtocki Kuwana for timing spray. Field phonology and temperature-dependent development of p. comstocki were studied, and its stage transition models were developed. p comstocki occurred three generations a year in Suwon. The 1 st adults occurred during mid to late June, and the 2nd adults were abundant during mid to late August. The 3rd adults were observed after late October. The development times of each instar of p. comstocki decreased with increasing temperature up to 25$^{\circ}C$, and thereafter the development times increased. The estimated low-threshold temperatures were 14.5, 8.4, 10.2, 11.8, and 10.1$^{\circ}C$ for eggs, 1st+2nd nymphs, 3rd nymphs, preoviposition, and 1st nymphs to preoviposition, respectively. The degree-days (thermal constants) for completion of each instar development were 105 DD for egg,315 DD for 1st+2nd nymph, 143 DD for 3rd nymph, 143 DD for preoviposition, and 599 DD for 1 st nymph to preoviposition. The stage transition models of p. comstocki, which simulate the proportion of individuals shifted from a stage to the next stage, were constructed using the modified Sharpe and DeMichele model and the Weibull function. In field validation, degree-day models using mean-minus-base, sine wave, and rectangle method showed 2-3d, 1-7d, and 0-6 d deviation with actual data in predicting the peak oviposition time of the 1st and 2nd generation adults, respectively. The rate summation model, in which daily development rates estimated by biophysical model of Sharpe and DeMichele were accumulated, showed 1-2 d deviation with actual data at the same phonology predictions.

  • Serious depopulation has occurred since the rapid economic growth after $1965{\sim}1995$. As a result, nowadays most of mountain villages face difficulty in maintaining and managing their settlement, because of the elderly population and the extremely small size of the settlement. Population change is understood as the origin of depopulation problems and the criterion for the depopulation. This study aims to identify the problems of over-depopulation in rural Korea and to classify the patterns and process of follow and to provide policy alternatives. It consists with the three parts : identifying the problems of over- depopulation, classifying the socio-economic factors of fallow land, analyzing a detailed case study of follow land in over-depopulation rural area-Sangju Gun and to provide policy alternatives. The results are summarizes as follows: 1) In the study area, the amount of fallow and abandoned cultivated land has increased since 1975. With the increased urbanization, the cause of the increase in fallow and abandoned cultivated-land is the labor shortage of quantity and quality. The underlying reasons for the abandonment of farmland are poor field conditions and the lack of rented farmland. 2) The secondary cause is a relative labor shortage through specialization into intensive horticulture. In the study area, specialization into pear requires intensive labor input. It has caused a relative labor shortage. 3) The third causes are landowner and the lack of rented farmland due to labor shortage. The declining of agriculture and forestry have caused out-migration and increased non-residents' landowner. 4) The fallow patterns are devided into two types the less favored farmland fallow type, non-residents' landowner(out-migrator) fallow type. The significant causes of the increase in fallow and abandoned cultivated land are the labor shortage, intensive farming, less favored farmland conditions, non-residents' landowner. The factors which caused the follow processes in Korea are socio-economic factors (labor shortage, intensive farming, less favored farmland conditions) and cultural factor(non-residents' landowner, psychological ties between rural areas and urban areas).
