  • Many studies have been performed to reduce electric consumption in railway systems. Due to its low conduction loss and high regenerative braking efficiency characteristics, the ESS powered railway system is chosen as a promising candidate for future railway systems. This paper introduces the ESS powered railway system and analyzes current power charge calculation methods that have been set up by KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation). Based on the analysis, this paper proposes two different power charge reduction methods for the railway system. One is to smooth the peaks of traction energy consumption by supplying additional energy to the grid. The other is to save electric charge by reducing electric energy consumed by the railway during the energy peak time, 2 p.m.~5 p.m., which has highest 'Won/kWh' rates. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the power charge of Seoul Metro Line 2 is recalculated using the method.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to find some kinetic variable's relationships between personal records and low records in female high jump. Methods : Collected data of the subjects(N=8, ages: $25.5{\pm}1.85$, height: $173{\pm}5.83$, mass: $54.75{\pm}6.36$ personal record: $1.71{\pm}0.04$, low record: $1.62{\pm}0.03$) were used for the last three strides and take-off phase. Five video cameras set in 30frames/s were used for recording. After digitizing motion, the Direct Linear Transformation(DLT) technique was employed to obtain 3-D position coordinates. The kinematic and kinetic factors of distance, velocity, angle, impulse, jerk variables were calculated. A paired t-test was applied for the difference of variables between personal records and lower records and for correlation with performances and variables. The significance level was accepted at p<.05. Results : There was no relationship between pattern of stride and performance. However, rate of change of velocity was related with cental of mass height(CMH) at peak point(PP). Knee, hip, backward lean, foot plant, approach and take off angle showed no difference between best record and low record. Vertical impulse momentum also showed no difference between performances. Conclusion : According to a t-test result, there were significant differences in CMH at PP and jerk at touch down between best record and low record.

  • Numerical air quality forecasting suffers from the large uncertainties of input data including emissions, boundary conditions, earth surface properties. Data assimilation has been widely used in the field of weather forecasting as a way to reduce the forecasting errors stemming from the uncertainties of input data. The present study aims at evaluating the effect of input data on the air quality forecasting results in Korea when data assimilation was invoked to generate the initial concentrations. The forecasting time was set to 36 hour and the emissions and initial conditions were chosen as tested input parameters. The air quality forecast model for Korea consisting of WRF and CMAQ was implemented for the test and the chosen test period ranged from November $2^{nd}$ to December $1^{st}$ of 2014. Halving the emission in China reduces the forecasted peak value of $PM_{10}$ and $SO_2$ in Seoul as much as 30% and 35% respectively due to the transport from China for the no-data assimilation case. As data assimilation was applied, halving the emissions in China has a negligible effect on air pollutant concentrations including $PM_{10}$ and $SO_2$ in Seoul. The emissions in Korea still maintain an effect on the forecasted air pollutant concentrations even after the data assimilation is applied. These emission sensitivity tests along with the initial condition sensitivity tests demonstrated that initial concentrations generated by data assimilation using field observation may minimize propagation of errors due to emission uncertainties in China. And the initial concentrations in China is more important than those in Korea for long-range transported air pollutants such as $PM_{10}$ and $SO_2$. And accurate estimation of the emissions in Korea are still necessary for further improvement of air quality forecasting in Korea even after the data assimilation is applied.

  • A new ion transport code for planetary ionospheric studies has been developed with consideration of velocity differences among ion species involving ion-ion collision. Most of previous planetary ionosphere models assumed that ions diffuse through non-moving ion and neutral background in order to consolidate continuity and momentum equations for ions into a simple set of diffusion equations. The simplification may result in unreliable density profiles of ions at high altitudes where ion velocities are fast and their velocity differences are significant enough to cause inaccuracy when computing ion-ion collision. A new code solves explicitly one-dimensional continuity and momentum equations for ion densities and velocities by utilizing divided Jacobian matrices in matrix inversion necessary to the Newton iteration procedure. The code has been applied to Martian nightside ionosphere models, as an example computation. The computed density profiles of $O^+,\;OH^+$, and $HCO^+$ differ by more than a factor of 2 at altitudes higher than 200 km from a simple diffusion model, whereas the density profile of the dominant ion, $O_2^+$, changes little. Especially, the density profile of $HCO^+$ is reduced by a factor of about 10 and its peak altitude is lowered by about 40 km relative to a simple diffusion model in which $HCO^+$ ions are assumed to diffuse through non-moving ion background, $O_2^+$. The computed effects of the new code on the Martian nightside models are explained readily in terms of ion velocities that were solved together with ion densities, which were not available from diffusion models. The new code should thus be expected as a significantly improved tool for planetary ionosphere modelling.

  • In this paper, a different type of pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme for a buck converter is introduced. The proposed buck converter uses PWM with frequency hopping and a low quiescent.current low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator with a power supply rejection ratio enhancer to reduce high spurs, harmonics and output voltage ripples. The low quiescent.current LDO voltage regulator is not described in this paper. A three-bit binary-to-thermometer decoder scheme and voltage ripple controller (VRC) is implemented to achieve low voltage ripple less than 3mV to increase the efficiency of the buck converter. An internal clock that is synchronized to the internal switching frequency is used to set the hopping rate. A center frequency of 2.5MHz was chosen because of the bluetooth low energy (BLE) application. This proposed DC-DC buck converter is available for low-current noise-sensitive loads such as BLE and radio frequency loads in portable communications devices. Thus, a high-efficiency and low-voltage ripple is required. This results in a less than 2% drop in the regulator's efficiency, and a less than 3mV voltage ripple, with -26 dBm peak spur reduction operating in the buck converter.

  • A numerical method and experiments for the aerodynamic design of high performance two-stage axial flow fans was carried out. A vortex ring element method used for the aerodynamic analysis of the propellers was extended to the fan-duct system. Fan Performance and velocity profiles at the fan inlet and outlet are compared with experimental data for the validations of numerical method. Performance test was done based on KS B 6311(testing methods for turbo-fans and blowers). The velocity profile was obtained using a 5-hole pitot tube by the non-nulling method. The two stage axial flow fan configurations for the optimal operation conditions were set by using the experimental results for the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively low efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. In contrast, the single stage and the two-stage axial flow fans showed performance improvements due to the swirl velocity reduction by the stator. The peak efficiency of the two stage axial flow fan was improved by 21% and 6%, compared to the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan, respectively.

  • The transient behavior of a passive air breathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) operated on vapor-feeding mode is studied in this paper. It generally takes 30 minutes after starting for the cell response to come to its steady-state and the response is sometimes unstable. A mathematical dynamic one-dimensional model for simulating transient response of the DMFC is presented. In this model a DMFC is decomposed into its subsystems using lumped model and divided into five layers, namely the anodic diffusion layer, the anodic catalyst layer, the proton exchange membrane (PEM), the cathodic catalyst layer and the cathodic diffusion layer. All layers are considered to have finite thickness, and within every one of them a set of differential-algebraic governing equations are given to represent multi-components mass balance, such as methanol, water, oxygen and carbon dioxide, charge balance, the electrochemical reaction and mass transport phenomena. A one-dimensional, isothermal and mass transport model is developed that captures the coupling between water generation and transport, oxygen consumption and natural convection. The single cell is supplied by pure methanol vapor from a methanol reservoir at the anode, and the oxygen is supplied via natural air-breathing at the cathode. The water is not supplied from external source because the cell uses the water created at the cathode using water back diffusion through nafion membrane. As a result of simulation strong effects of water transport were found out. The model analysis provides several conclusions. The performance drop after peak point is caused by insufficiency of water at the anode. The excess water at the cathode makes performance recovery impossible. The undesired crossover of the reactant methanol through the PEM causes overpotential at the cathode and limits the feeding methanol concentration.

  • This paper presents the flow and the suspended sediment movement over ripples for oscillatory flows. A new numerical model system is developed, and applied to a laboratory experimental condition of regular waves and a fictitious condition of irregular waves. The flow field is obtained from a programme proposed by Kim et. al.(1994), which is a modified version of SOLA based on SMAC scheme. The sub-model solves the continuity and Reynolds momentum equations in the x-z plane. The wave orbital velocities, shear stresses, and pressure are all reasonably reproduced by the model. The model results on the vertical velocity component show good agreement with the measurements. The suspended sediment transport sub-model is newly set up to solve the advection-diffusion equation of suspended sediment using a split method, and involving a special shear entrainment from the whole ripple surface. The calculated suspended sediment concentrations for regular waves show reasonable agreement with measurements at Deltaflume. The model results for random waves show that the suspended sediment concentration is higher than those for regular waves and that the sediment diffuses higher than for regular waves with the significant wave height and the peak wave period of the irregular waves.

  • The effect of the light on the stability of 5-fluorouracil admixture was investigated. Four sets of 5-fluorouracil admixture were prepared using 50 mg/ml injection in $5\%$ dextrose solution in PVC bags and glass bottles: (1) 5-fluorouracil 1 mg/ml concentration in glass bottles, (2) 5-fluorouracil 1 mg/ml in PVC bags, (3) 5-fluorouracil 10 mg/ml in glass bottles, and (4) 5-fluorouracil 10 mg/ml in PVC bags. In each set, one group was protected from the light (control group) and the other group was exposed to the fluorescent light (study group). All admixtures were stored at room temperature for 72 hours. Also, 5-fluorouracil injections (50 mg/ml) were prepared in plastic syringes. Half of the samples of 50 mg/ml concentration were protected from the light (control group) and the other half were exposed to the fluorescent light (study group). These were stored at room temperature for 48 hours. After visual inspection, the pHs of each admixture were determined. The 5-fluorouracil concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection, with 5-bromouracil as an internal standard. Over the study period, no visual changes were observed. The pHs of 5-fluorouracil admixtures were in the range of $8.2\~8.5$. The peak area ratios (5-FU/5-BrU) of 5-fluorouracil admixtures protected from the light were compared with those of the admixtures exposed to the light. There was no statistically significant difference between two groups during the study period (p>0.05). In conclusion, 5-fluorouracil admixtures in $5\%$ dextrose solution exposed to the light were stable for 72 hours.
